Tomorrow morning’s papers are set to carry further stories speculating on Wayne Rooney’s recovery from his groin injury. Judging by an article posted online by the Guardian this evening, they will be publishing a piece stating that Rooney has been given “an outside chance” of making the trip to Sunderland this coming weekend by United’s medical team. The Daily Mail are also carrying a similar story…
The Guardian article carries no specific quotes but has enough to suggest that it’s informed not only on the verdict of United’s medical staff but also views from Rooney himself. The article states that the striker was “surprised by some of the manager’s public statements” following Alex Ferguson’s claims that he would likely be absent for two to three weeks. The story also goes on to state that Rooney has “strained the abductor muscle at the top of his leg” but remains encouraged by the fact that he is a proven fast healer. If only these journalists had shown such insight prior to Saturday’s clash with Spurs.
It all sounds inprobable but we have seen statements regarding Rooney having an “outside chance” of making a game before – the last time being prior to the second-leg of the Champions League Quarter-Final with Bayern Munich. Rooney made a near miracle recovery from an ankle injury to start that game, although he was clearly unfit and was subbed following Rafael’s dismissal.
It seems that the uncertainty surrounding the Rooney injury just goes on then; hardly a helpful situation for Rooney’s Fantasy owners who face a key decision with just two gameweeks remaining.
We can only await further developments as the week progresses. Something tells me that this one will run and run up until the weekend.
