When Heurelho Gomes came to Spurs in June 2008, it didn’t start well. He was brought in on the back of a bad season for Paul Robinson and after a cloddish own-goal against Fulham it seemed that all Spurs had managed to achieve was swapping Coco the Clown for Bozo.
After a series of match-winning performances though, Gomes is no longer a figure of fun but perhaps the spectre of that tomfoolery still lingers; he is only selected by a meagre 4% of the Fantasy Premier League population…
Spurs have a double gameweek coming up with a juicy home fixture against Bolton and then a tricky season-defining away game at Manchester City. After extremely strong, and generally unexpected, performances against Arsenal and Chelsea, Tottenham’s stock seems to be rising and fourth place is now very much attainable for the Lillywhites.
Gomes has a very strong chance of getting a clean sheet against a Bolton side with little to play for and then of bolstering those points with a slew of saves at Eastlands. These two fixtures are followed by a trip to Burnley, which is certainly a desirable fixture to end the season on.
Despite perhaps a hesitance in investing in the Tottenham defence – Bale withstanding, Gomes should definitely be worth considering. He has the highest points per game of any keeper, the joint-highest amount of bonus points and penalty saves and costs a mere 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League.
If you’re in the market for a new goalkeeper, perhaps you have the unfortunate combination of Sorenson and Given, both of whom sustained injuries this weekend, then Gomes is one of the best options for what’s left of the season. If you are considering investing in the Tottenham defence, and you either already have Bale or you have an unfortunate aversion to the “Boy from the Valleys” then Gomes would certainly make a savvy investment.
