As yet, there’s still no definitive news on the fitness of Heurelho Gomes going into tonight’s crunchiest of games with Man City. Harry Redknapp confirmed yesterday that Gomes had not returned to training following the groin injury suffered in Saturday’s win over Bolton and indicated that he would leave things to the last minute before assessing his keeper’s availability..

“He didn’t train yesterday (Monday) and he won’t do too much today…We hope he’s fit because he’s important to us. I’m hopeful.”

An insight into the Gomes may come later today, although Redknapp may decide to keep his cards cuddled up to his chest. It’s a similar situation with Ledley King who is also set to be assessed prior to kick-off. King’s long-running knee problems continue to make it difficult for the defender to take part in midweek matches having turned out at the weekend but again, Redknapp seems hopeful…

“I’ll leave it to Ledley. If he feels he’s fit and he’s up for playing, he’ll tell me. If he’s not quite right, he’ll tell me. He knows his body and how his knee is feeling and he will let me know.”

The Spurs boss will likely turn to Sebastien Bassong should King fail to make it, or possibly shift Younes Kaboul to a central role and switch Benoit Assou-Ekotto to right-back. Either way Gareth Bale owners will be waiting anxiously to see if their man lines up on the left of midfield tonight.

It was confirmed yesterday that Verdran Coluka was once again sidelined with his ankle injury and personally, I can see Redknapp starting with the more mobile Assou-Ekotto against the threat of Craig Bellamy, while he’ll also be tempted to recall Wilson Palacios to a midfield role in order to strengthen things in the middle of the park. That would likely see Luka Modric switch to the left in Bale’s position.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
