Andre Pirlo is set to make a return to the Italian lineup just in time to perform a rescue act on their World Cup. The AC Milan playmaker has missed the Azzurri’s opening two matches with a calf injury but trained today for the first time during the Finals and, given Italy’s plight in Group F, could be thrown straight into Thursday’s crucial game with Slovakia.

Italy must get something from that match if they are to stand a chance of progressing and Pirlo undoubtedly has the talent to help them achieve that. Pirlo could well take on the role of midfield creator from Ricardo Montolivo who has shouldered the burden in his absence. Having been described as “irreplaceable” by Italy boss Marcello Lippi earlier this week, Pirlo will surely be given every chance to prove his fitness and claim a starting role. Lippi was however cautious about his chances of making Thursday when quizzed today

“Today is the first time he has touched the ball in 15 days. Almost recovered? Let’s see, we have to make some checks. Let’s hope so but…”

Pirlo is available as a mid-price option across the Fantasy games and has suffered a price drop to 6.8 in the McDonalds/FIFA effort. Potential returns could well be limited however given that Italy are unlikely to topple Paraguay at the top of their group, lining them up with a possible second round tie with Holland who look set to win Group E.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
