Fernando Torres faces up to three weeks out following the abductor injury sustained in Sunday’s World Cup Final.
Liverpool have confirmed the “good” news this evening following the results of scans that took place in Spain on Tuesday. The official statement offers us this from their “Head of Sports Science and Medicine” Peter Brukner…
“The initial assessment was he had a mild adductor tear and the Spanish medial staff didn’t consider it to be too serious at the time…He had an MRI scan yesterday which confirmed a small tear. He should be able to resume training within two to three weeks and be able to play again within three to four weeks.”
Given this news it would appear that Torres will be available to Roy Hodgson for the season opener with Arsenal on August 15. He will however definitely sit out the two-legged Europa League qualifier on July 29 and August 5…
Despite the optimism, a return for the televised Gunners game is far from guaranteed. As we know all too well, Torres is a fragile beast who is vulnerable to complications and prolonged absences. Even if he does make a recovery, Torres will miss Liverpool’s entire pre-season. Short on sharpness and off the back of a desperately disappointing World Cup, it would appear that from a Fantasy perspective, Torres will be shelved as a possible signing for our initial squads.
This latest injury setback will likely be enough to perturb all but the most loyal Torres and Liverpool supporters. Despite an injury-plagued season last term, Torres will be placed in the same price bracket as both Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney across the various Fantasy Games. Certainly in the Fantasy Premier League game he can be found at 11.5 – a million cheaper than Drogba and just 0.5 cheaper than Rooney.
These doubts over Torres surely only eases the path for Rooney and/or Drogba to find their way into our squads. The Liverpool striker looks set to be little more than an early season differential, a fate compounded by the fact that Hodgson faces a baptism of fire with Arsenal, City and United all lying over his first five fixtures in charge. The new Liverpool boss can at least take some comfort from the fact that his injury-prone star striker will likely be at his disposal for one season at least with this injury set to calm talk of an Anfield departure for Torres.
