Ahh… the reassuring presence of the first Captain Poll.

Yes we’re back on the regulars, starting with the weekly post reminding you to cast your vote for your current choice of Fantasy Captain for the first weekend of the new season.

Quelle surprise with three hundred votes in the bag, it’s the last year’s overall top Fantasy Premier League points scorer – Frank Lampard, who leads the pack by a hefty margin. Wayne Rooney, fresh from a staggeringly awful World Cup, is fancied to put Newcastle to the sword on Monday night by a good proportion of you and he’s followed by Didier Drogba – the obvious alternative to our Frank for Chelsea’s kind little opener with West Brom.

Further down the list there are some intriguing options that have poked their head above the Fantasy parapet. Notably Wigan’s Mauro Boselli is getting some love, no doubt inspired by his impressive pre-season showings and the fact that Wigan will be the first to test Blackpool’s highly questionable credentials as a Premier League club. Remember Wigan getting off to a flyer at Villa last season? Hit the ground running this term and it could be illuminations out early for Blackpool.

I’m also intrigued to see United’s Mexican import Javier Hernandez picking some straggling votes. A real differential and certainly a gamble going into the first weekend. Will Ferguson not opt for the languid luxuries of Berbatov alongside Rooney? Some obviously think not.

Get your votes in now. The poll is alive and kicking in your middle column.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
