After a last minute panic, Sunderland succeeded in what must go down as the biggest coup of the deadline day deals by smashing their club record transfer record to for Ghanaian World Cup star Asamoah Gyan. The striker arrives from French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes for a fee in excess of £13 million.
The big striker heads to Wearside with a reputation glowing from a string of impressive performances at this summer’s World Cup. Apart from a last minute penalty miss – Darren Bent owners can probably be safe there – the striker caught the eye of many European clubs as Ghana made it to the quarter-finals.
It was Steve Bruce though who acted with reports suggesting that Sunderland had been tracking the striker before South Africa. With the recent confirmation that Frazier Campbell could be out for the season with an injury he picked up against Manchester City at the weekend, the new signing is timely and Gyan will surely not have to wait long for his debut.
The recent loan capture of youngster Danny Welbeck will, of course, pose a certain amount of threat but the sizeable fee and talent of this international calibre striker means it’s pretty certain we will be seeing him partner up with Darren Bent for the trip to Wigan on September 11th.
Now all we can do is await Fantasy Premier League to add him to their rosters and compare his price and see if he’s worthwhile – an £8m price tag probably sounds appropriate given his stature.
Sunderland have fixtures against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United after the aforementioned trip to the DW stadium in the next five; that gives us plenty of time to asses his worth and how he settles in the North East while Sunderland navigate through that tough run of games.
Owners of Darren Bent will also have to assess just how the arrival of Gyan will impact the prolific England hopeful. Gyan and Bent look to be a formidable pairing but it’s unclear just how this will influence Bent’s potential goal tally.
