Morning has broken, like the fourth Gameweek morning of the season. It’s time to hit the Saturday papers then and perhaps revise our thinking when it comes to the Premier League lineups after absorbing the views of the press “experts”.
This week we throw Untied’s back four, Harry’s midfield plans and the plight of poor old Charles N’Zogbia at the regular rags and see what pearls of wisdom bounce back…
Will Rio Return For United?
Alex Ferguson may go into the game at Everton with some concerns over the baggage being carried by Wayne Rooney up front but at the back he can take comfort in the fact that Rio Ferdinand is fit and available to offer greater security. With the Champions League tie with Rangers looming however, will Ferguson throw Rio straight into the Goodison cauldron?
The Sun: No. The red-top goes with Jonny Evans at the back alongside Nemanja Vidic. John O’Shea remains at right-back and Ferguson goes with Nani and Giggs on the flanks.
The Times: Yes. Ferdinand slots back in alongside Vidic but elsewhere the Times agrees with the Sun’s lineup.
The Telegraph: No. This broadsheet sticks with Evans in the United rearguard and goes with Park out on the left. No place for Antonio Valencia again then.
The Guardian: Yes but it’s a tentative one. The Guardian gives us a 50:50 split on this one by predicting a start for Ferdinand although they have their doubts. Interestingly they also feel that Ferguson will drop Dimitar Berbatov to the bench and start Giggs up in support of Rooney. Valencia returns to his favoured right-flank berth and Nani switches left.
I say: No. I think Ferguson will bring back Ferdinand for the game against Rangers and start with Evans once again at Goodison. This will however, likely be the last hurrah for the Irishman as a Fantasy prospect and he’s going out with a tricky one. I’m not predicting a cleanie or an easy ride for United today.
Will Harry find a spot for his Dutch master?
Rafael van der Vaart is an expensive asset to keep on the bench and yet with the return to fitness of Luka Modric, there’s no obvious role in midfield to hand his new playmaker. Will Van der Vaart see a start at the Hawthorns?
The Sun: Yes. The Sun predict that Redknapp will drop the Dutchman into a central role behind the lone striker Peter Crouch leaving Modric fidgeting on the bench. William Gallas comes in for Michael Dawson at the back.
The Times: No. Van der Vaart sits this one out allowing Modric to take up the role in support of the striker in a 4-5-1. Gallas starts at the back again here.
The Telegraph: Yes. The Dutchman partners Modric in a five man midfield with no place for Wilson Palacios. It’s an ambitious lineup predicted here then.
The Guardian: No. This paper also supports the 4-5-1 but again it’s Modric who gets the advanced role from midfield. Gallas comes in but he partners Sebastian Bassong in defence with King rested for Champions League action.
I say: No. For me Van der Vaart will get his chance for the trip to Werder Bremen on Tuesday although we are likely to see some pitch time from him today. Modric is set to get the nod for the trip to West Brom and he, along with Gareth Bale, will be key to Tottenham’s chances.
Will N’Zogbia be forgiven and find his way back in favour?
Charles N’Zogbia has so far stalled his season and Fantasy prospects with his failed attempts at engineering a move away from the DW Stadium. The Frenchman has it in him to be a star mid-price asset for us Fantasy Managers but he won’t start earning that Fantasy Premier League Bonus with a scattering of substitute appearances. Roberto Martinez has been making positive noises on N’Zogbia’s chances of starting against Sunderland this weekend, so will we see the “proper Charlie” back in the mix?
The Sun: Yes. N’Zogbia starts on the right-flank in place of Ronnie Stam who, despite impressing so far this season, is dropped to the bench with Emmerson Boyce preferred at right-back. Seems unlikely.
The Times: Yes. Martinez brings back N’Zogbia talents to his midfield so once again here there’s no start for new boys Tom Cleverley or Franco Di Santo.
The Telegraph: Yes. N’Zogbia looks like getting the unanimous vote as he drops into the Telegraph’s predicted lineup alongside Cleverley in Wigan’s midfield. There’s no place for Hendry Thomas or James McCarthy here as Di Santo starts with Mauro Boselli in an attacking looking Wigan lineup.
The Guardian: Denied at the last. The Guardian don’t see a return for N’Zogbia here and instead give a start to Cleverley alongside Thomas, Diame and McCarthy in midfield.
I say: Yes – Martinez can’t afford to keep a talent like N’Zogbia on the bench when Wigan are likely to be scrapping for the points all season. The arrival of Cleverley and Di Santo, plus the win at Spurs last time out have brought back the positivity at the DW and it’s an ideal time for N’Zogbia to be dropped back in to cast his spell on the flank.
