In the midnight hours of Wednesday night the folks at Uefa decided to do what we had long been waiting for – they rolled out the red carpet on a new season of Fantasy Champions League.

With only a day to go until the Champions League kicks off, that leaves you little time to cram all the star players you can find into your squad of fifteen if you’ve yet to begin. Time for dilly-dallying is over, now the selections need to be made.

Fantasy Football Scout has, of course, set-up our own league (code: 965-278) for everyone to join in and jostle their way to the top with their continental management styles. But be warned, I’m the reigning Scout champion, so I won’t relinquish my crown without a fight.

There’s lots to be done in so little time so we’ll just skim a couple of the notable rules that new and old managers may want to pick up on…

  • You get plenty of transfers. Unlimited after the group stages, 6 after every knock-out round and a wildcard to use at your own discretion – plenty of wiggle room. As well as only 2 points deducted for every added trade.
  • Scoring is very much akin to FPL with a couple of slight differences. Notably, earning a penalty isn’t an assist in it’s own right and only merits 1 point, as there is also 1 point lost for giving one away. There are no assists or deductions on own goals either.
  • Progressing from last season, and if you were with us over our McFantasy ventures this season, managers substitutions return. You can basically risk bringing a player off your bench who has yet to play for one in your starting XI you feel may have underperformed. Unless they received a red card, those chaps you’re stuck with.
  • You can play 2-5-3 if you like. I’m a big fan of this formation myself.

There’s something very pleasing about a strikeforce of Messi, Ronaldo and Villa. If only it was so financially simple – best get cracking then.
