Our Watchlist rankings have now been updated to reflect the events of Gameweek Four, recent injuries and of course the changing face of the next five fixtures.
You can find the rankings in your right-hand sidebar on the frontpage. Use the tabs to peruse each position table. If you’re new to the Watchlist these represents our mid-term player recommendations based on the next five fixtures. This page offers more info on the factors that play a part in the selection.
For those already in the know on how this work, here’s some notes on the movers and shakers…
There are a whole host of new entries this week with Pepe Reina’s three attractive home matches helping him to crash in at number two in the Keepers chart, while team-mates Glen Johnson and Paul Konchesky similarly benefit in the Defender rankings. The United pairing of John O’Shea and Patrice Evra are climbers just behind them with their run of games to come, although of course it’s worth noting that United face Liverpool this very Gameweek – investment in all four of these players is likely to be on hold right now then.
Blackburn’s tidy run of fixtures has the combination of Chris Samba (more on him to come) and Phil Jones climb as mid-price options at the back. Similarly decent runs for Wigan and Birmingham see both Roger Johnson (or Scott Dann if you prefer) and Ronnie Stam enjoy a slight rise this week.
In Midfield Florent Malouda slips from the top spot following last weekend’s shock rotation to the bench prior to this week’s Champions League game. His drop is caused by the rapid climb for United’s Nani – last night’s injury to Antonio Valencia, combined with a very strong run of games for Alex Ferguson’s men, help to make the winger an almost essential purchase for the coming weeks. Cesc Fabregas and Adam Johnson are climbers with form dropping into place, as are Paul Scholes, Mikel Arteta and Matt Etherington.
Fulham’s Clint Dempsey, with the opportunity for a run of starts up front in the absence of Bobby Zamora, is a notable new entry in this position. Everton’s Tim Cahill with decent form and the opportunity to lead the Everton attack after his performance up front against United last time out, is also a new name entering high.
Birmingham’s pairing of Craig Gardner and Seb Larsson also deserve a mention given their run of games to come. We’re still not sure how the Alexander Hleb factor will influence the Alex McLeish teamsheet but they figure in our Watchlist with the promise of a further climb once we know more.
Up front Didier Drogba continues to dominate but it’s United’s Dimitar Berbatov who climbs to second as Andy Carroll’s fixtures stiffen a little. Fulham’s Mousa Dembele and Birmingham’s Cameron Jerome are notable clmbers lower down the list for those shopping in the low-to-mid price bracket.
There will doubtless be tweaks and changes to the rankings over the next 24 hours, particularly if we suffer any key injuries over the European games to come. Keep an eye on the rankings then and we will alert you to any notable shifts.
