The short wait to find out the magic number needed to qualify for the third Fantasy Football Scout Cup, sponsored by Paddy Power, is over. All thanks to my colleague SUPERIOR BEING for producing the results so quickly.

A fantastic turnout for the qualifying round saw 1,283 fantasy managers fighting it out for just 510 places. After hits, a score of 49 or above is good enough for the first round. For the 43 fantasy managers sitting on 48 points for the week, you will have to click here to see if you made the grade, as your qualification is dependant on overall rank…

With odds so slim, it’s no surprise to see so many big names drop out at this early stage. Amongst others, contributors SIR PAULOS (46), Big Dunc (42), Andy (43), SUPERIOR BEING (37), Da Beeeez (38) and Money Mike (38) all missed the cut, leaving just six contributors left in the Cup.

So onto the first round proper now, where Jonty and donnellyc join us. The fixtures for which will be published a few days before the next deadline (although I may not make you wait that long).

Thanks again to everyone who entered, congratulations to the qualifiers, and commiserations to those missing the cut.

well gents, just watched extended highlights of the spurs game, and crouch is in my team when spurs fixtrues lighten up.

also, bale was fantastic, should have had 2 assists, bar a handle by dunne that wasnt intentional but stopped a goal.

As for VDV, ran everything, i might get him in and play both him and bale

Villa looked great too aswell to be honest, with DUnne 100% soon enough, theyll only get better and better

Yeah Villa should be well organised under Houllier so i'll expect the clean sheets to start coming. Besides pissibly adding a defender I don't think i want more cover than Albrighton though - Maybe Ireland if he comes good at some point.

doubling up on spurs mids is way risky if u ask me. spurs have always been too inconsistent and by havin 2 of em in there u are just doubling the pain when they inevitably underperform . i reckon u are better off sticking to one of those two and someone else eg. ethers who will bring home the bacon fairly regularly. just my 2 cents of course 🙂

learnt it it the hard way triplying up on them last season when they had a dgw, hull being one of the teams.

With the CL as a distraction i going to be extra careful this time round

What are thoughts on Gerrard -> Fabregas for a hit? Still have wc option however don't see the point at the mo - but liverpool are troubling me. Prob won;t captain either of them so an extra 4pts for fabregas vs birm in first league game back is possible, but then city away. Just not sure.

      Foster
      Alex – Elhomandi – Coleman
      Gerrard – Malouda – Nani – VDV
      Drogba – Berbatov – Carroll

Gerrard > Fabregas will be a popular move this week; the only question mark is whether he will start the match v Birmingham. There's a reasonable argument for holding off until gw10 when they play West Ham at home until we see how the land lies; although you would be holding onto Gerrard for the next gw.

Personally, I think everyone buying Fabregas right now are mad.
        1. His next Arsenal game isn't for another 2 weeks!
        2. He could easily suffer an injury recurrence.
        3. He has international duty & could pick up a knock.
        4. His next fixture is against a team who're quite good at parking the bus and they Will park the bus (not that that usually stops Fabregas)
        5. The following fixture is City away, one of the least attractive prospects for any attacking player in FPL.

Fabregas / Van Der Vaart / Nani / Malouda

I agree with this 100% Scratch.

Wait at least a week or two and see what's happening with Fabs before rushing out to part with £11.8m or more.

I'm very tempted not to bother with him at all and use the money to strengthen all round. For example, Etherington will be about £6m cheaper yet a lot of weeks he'll probably score not disimilar to Fabregas.

That £6m buys you a top tier striker instead of the Carroll's and Harewood's of this world, or a top scoring defender. Or means you can play 5 strong midfielders instead of 3 good ones and 2 cheap bench warmers.

I'm not saying don't have him, but not having him isn't going to be the be all and end all of your season if you spend the money you 'save' wisely.

GW10 perhaps, but you know, none of the top 4 in the world have ever had him in their team. I wonder if they'll have him later. Or do they know something we don't?

Like you, I think if I do get him back it will be to replace Malouda rather than have him and Malouda. However, I do like Malouda and find it hard to take him out for anyone.

Cheers guys. Yeah it's definitely too early to do it right now, but as you say there's a definite non-zero probability that Fabs doesn't even play (Gerrard will). As I see it, if I don;t switch for next gw I won;t be doing the next one either purely on the basis of fixtures.

Cheers for the reassurance - at least I'm not the only one who doesn't see this as 'the' trade to do.

It is massively tempting - I'm struggling not to hit the button just to have something to do for 2 weeks, but keep reminding myself about the messed up games last winter when I'd have loved a wc.

Hi all doing pretty well so far. Was thinking of vdv in for bale as was gonna do that sat night now vdv has gone up bale down. Vdv going up tonight so don't want to wait. Would need to downgrade o shea to mummy and 3 point hit. Then Gerrard to fabs in gameweek 10. Is it a kneejerk to swap bale for vdv. if i were you i wud definitely not do that transfer so early and run the gauntlet of international fixtures and what-not hang on to your transfer until closer to the deadline when injury might force your hand to make another, as yet unconsidered transfer . IMO prudence equals success. as a disclaimer i don't really know what i'm talkin about but erring on the side of caution is never bad advice 🙂

Well mate it is a gamble, I did the move early as I couldnt afford it the next day. If you can afford to hold off then do so, its the safer move. To get that midfield and strike force I have marginalised my defence, again a big gamble.

                        Not a chance...

Grammar and writing style is completely different.

Dbronaldo likes to use as many seperate paragraphs as possible.

                        A bit like this.

I-Dont-Like-RoysBrotherJohnson, do you think Steve Gerrard could've been thought of as 'world class' at any time in his career?

Too true Odemwinjie or whatever his name will probably come in instead.

Other thing to think about seems to be is Berba a better deal than Tevez £2m cheaper some might think. Plus you get to strengthen the mid?

This is what I'm wondering too, Bazman.

I really like Tevez, but I think Man Utd are going to score more goals than Man City will. Rooney doesn't look like being a factor for a while yet either and a home tie with West Brom looks pretty plum.

The leader in my mini league has Berbatov, no one has Tevez, so Carlito would be a very nice differential!

He could do with a goal v Wigan. I was expecting a lot more after the Villa hat-trick.

Liverpool are hardly a barometer for good performance at present but I liked the look of Varney yesterday. He could be an alternative with Blackpool scoring well away from home as well.

Fixtures a bit of a mixed bag though: MCY bir WBA EVE avl

no he was unfancied as away at villa so no one thought he'd do well. i capatined torres, my main mini league rival captained rooney. Rooney didn't play, his vice captain lampard, he got 58 points or something and it lost me the mini league.

So did I. Had him as captain both times as it happens. Lamps has been good to me over the years... guess I should probably cut him some slack when he flops for England... or maybe not.

I've never really had him in any of my teams... Even last year I only had him for the first five (where he was gash) and a few at the end..

Which game are you talking about? Derby or Villa?

I had Ballack captain for the Derby game. He got me a grand total of 6 (3x2) points, whilst Lampard (c) got something like 52.

So just listening to the news so how does this work out:

If you have a family with one earner is earning £45,000 no child care benefit but

If you have a family with two earners each earning £40,000 so £80,000 in total child care benefit allowed.

And this will hit the rich? I thought if you have a joint income of £80,000 that was more than £45,000 or is my maths completely wrong?

from what i got earlier its only based on the higheest wage earner, its a joke. if you have £45,000 coming in from anyone in the household its a bit cheeky to be taking any child care benefit. greedy sheisters if you ask me.

That is precisely the reason why it's absolutely critical. Once Child Benefit "is only paid to the deserving poor", the died-in-blood tories will take it away - as they are doing right now with all the other benefits. If you don't lock in all the middle class, no-one gives a shit.

                          Too true.
Ethically and morally it is wrong to see the poorer salaried paying for benefits for the rich no matter if its £45000 or £80000 or any salary.

Even more so when the dole is just £65.00 a week.

The poorest should be getting a bigger slice so good on the government for hitting the rich makes a change.

So you are under the conviction that VdV's play affects Bale negatively in fantasy terms? Interesting.

Against especially Werder Bremen, Twente and Villa VdV made some excellent long passes for Bale to gently pick down and make dangerous crosses with.

I have a feeling the VdV/Bale synergy might work similarly to Valencia/Rooney last year. Might be wrong of course...

Bale could have walked away with 8-10 points at the weekend: he should have got at least 2 assists.

I thought Bale was a "keeper" for the season but now I'm not so sure. I don't want both him and VDV in my team, and Harry has starting dropping big hints that the team is accommodating for VDV rather than the other way around.

Bale and VDV can easily play in the same midfield with just one out and out frontman.

'Arry would have to be a total idiot to move Bale back to LB, in order to accomodate playing two retards upfront.

Read an interview with Harry today where he basically said he's going to build a team around VdV playing behind a lone striker or 2 strikers..He also pondered where to play Bale and praised BAE..I love the way he's so open and frank about his tactics 🙂

Arry expressed delight how playing 4-4-1-1 with VDV behind Crouch worked very well in the second half vs Villa.

a beeter question would have been
Come May, who will have the highest Value (season)?

                    Nani or VdV
as nani will obvoisly outscore bale by more than 40 points

that is also a good question. what do you think?

i have a feeling that might be VdV, as he also takes set pieces, corners and a maybe also penalties. Nani faces severe competition for all of those.

Etherington is playing really influentially but don't like Stoke's upcoming fixtures. The moves look fine but an 8 point hit so early in the new gw is asking for trouble...

Well, RBJ had a good wheeze, taking in Cl rotation risk, he reckoned Malouda to Fabregas GW9 or GW10 would be a good move - and I might too ...

Agree about Fabs. I'm going to squeeze my butt cheeks firmly together and hope he doesn't destroy me before GW10. To get him in I'm likely to have to get rid of at least two of Malouda, Nani, Arteta and Bale... or possibly downgrade Drogs.

Looking at it quickly I could do Nani and Malouda to VdV and Fabs with a downgrade to Alex... eurgh too many not ideal options. It'll take me until GW10 to figure it out.

I'm thinking of binning him this week... There's a chance that he'll be rested for the Wolves game, with us playing in Moscow during midweek. If he is, then he'll have the following fixtures in the next 4:

                    avl - liv bla

Rotation is 100% going to happen for the Wolves game, because of the trip to Russia and the ease of the fixture. Ancelotti has already shown that he is more than willingly to rest our bigger players, even if games that aren't that easy, like the West Ham one. It's just a question of which attacking players will be benched.

For me, Malouda is the most likely of the wide players. Pressumably he'll have played twice for France during the international break, whereas Anelka obviously won't have! And Ivory Coast only have one game during the break. So all this adds up to, at least in my mind, Malouda being the most likely out of the front three to be benched vs Wolves, assuming that Kalou and Benayoun are both fit again - which they should be, the game is in 3 weeks time.

Again, this is all assuming that we play our strongest side in Moscow, which I would imagine we will do considering they are also on 6 points in our group.

                    Upshot of all this is:

                    Malouda > Nani. Yay!!

Thing is, all players get rotated and rested at some point. I'll just stick him on the bench if that's looking likely and not have to buy him back for ££££££ when he scores 17 the next Gw.

P.S. Recently Ancelotti's rotation has been fairly predictable, at least ever since the West Ham game where it all started... He doesn't seem to want players playing every game, which is fair enough.

For example, Anelka getting rested against Blackpool was inevitable and many people called it way before the Sunday, simply because Anelka had played every game so far.

According to the same logic, Malouda is at a very high risk of being rested for the Wolves game, which is just as easy - if not easier - than the Blackpool fixture.

I read it. Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself to get in super Nani to me. He's awesome though, so fair enough.

Nah, makes a lot of sense, but there are a lot of ifs and buts to happen before then.

Yep, lot of ifs and buts indeed. Anyway with my new fangled Supermidfield I have Nani as well 🙂

But if all the ifs and buts come together, definitely a possibility, then Malouda's fixtures for the next 4 are terrible. Nani's are:

                          WBA stk TOT WLV

And Utd are in absolutely no position to rest their most threatening attacking player. Chelsea easily can rest some of their best players.

P.S. Jammy bastard with the cup qualification. 😉

You don't need to pursude me on Nani, he's absolutely essential as far as i'm concerned, but then I think Malouda is too, and one games rest wouldn't change that.

Cup competition: I'm emailing Akers to fudge the draw so we can have a face off WWF smack down cage match.

I really need to ship out J.Evans...Initially i was considering Coleman but i need the defender transferred in to play this week & wouldn't wanna play him Vs Liverpool.
I've got a budget of £6.1 & already have Carr, Knight, Elmo & Konchesky

Baz - I think it was the right choice not to wildcard. Evans (not guaranteed starter), Van Damme (homesick) and possibly Konchesky (injured and Liverpool shite at back and all over the field for that matter) should give way at some point though...

Evans has been poor - culpable for some of the goals conceded at Fulham, Evertonand Bolton; but that overall performance from United on Saturday stank of the sewage that had invaded their changing room....

Fergie needs to fall in love with Carrick again. They actually miss him camped on the half way line. Fletcher and scholes offer 0 balance.

My rival has VDV himself so i need another suitable option to replace Bale with. I was thinking about N'Zogbia, his fixtures arn't too bad for the next 4 weeks, feedback appreciated on the idea.

Arteta!! Hes getting all the bonuses and once Everton hit form he'll get assists and goals aswell.
