Spurs win over Aston Villa last weekend saw Rafael Van der Vaart once again grab the headlines for the home side, with his match-winning brace now meaning he has scored four goals in three games in all competitions at White Hart Lane.

The ex-Real Madrid man not only offers Harry Redknapp a boost in quality to his squad, his adaptability seems to be impressing the Spurs boss to such an extent that ‘Arry is even prepared to ditch his beloved 4-4-2 system in order to accommodate his array of attacking, creative talents. Redknapp spoke of this after the game, saying:

“It’s not easy to play with two strikers, it’s almost impossible really. Two out-and-out-strikers is difficult, because Rafa doesn’t play wide right, he floats off the line and Luka Modric does almost the same, so that leaves you very open.

You’re not going to keep two strikers on your team with Rafa and Gareth Bale. You have to change the whole shape of your team. It’s an attacking team that is very open to the counter-attack.”

In spite of this admittance, Spurs, nevertheless, began the game playing 4-4-2, with Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up front and Van der Vaart on the right. The Dutchman is not a natural right-winger, and as these chalkboards shows, he continually found himself drifting away from the wing into the middle to look for the ball in the first half, leaving Spurs somewhat unbalanced on the flank.

With Aaron Lennon replacing the Russian at half-time, Van der Vaart took his place behind Crouch as a second striker, and -with Lennon taking over on the right- was given freedom to roam as Spurs went looking for the win.

A look at our OPTA Members Stats shows that Spurs, with 88 attempts, have the third highest number of shots at goal, but have managed to find the net just eight times. Compare this to Man United, who have 85 shots and a return of 16 goals or Blackpool, with 11 goals from just 63 shots, and you can see where the problems lie for Redknapp’s men.

As the table below shows, Crouch, Pavlyuchenko, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane have 19 appearances between them this season, and from their combined total of 27 shots, the goal-shy strike force have found the net just once. Van der Vaart alone, on the other hand, has managed 17 shots in his four league appearances, scoring 3 times.

PlayerAppearancesShots at GoalShots on TargetGoals
Peter Crouch7920
Roman Pavlyuchenko6731
Robbie Keane4420
Rafael Van der Vaart41793
Jermain Defoe2740

Redknapp is more than aware of his prowess, beaming:

He’ll score goals. He gets on the ball, he always wants to receive the ball, he’s always looking to score. When the ball goes up to Crouchy he’s always around there looking for it. He’s got a real knack for scoring.

Perhaps the most unfortunate player to suffer from this lack of poor Tottenham finishing, in terms of Fantasy points, has been Gareth Bale. On Saturday alone, Bale had 6 Key Passes that led to goal attempts from team mates, but left the pitch with just 1 FPL point for all his toils. Bale’s total of 20 Key Passes is more than any player in the league so far but he has, incredibly, not a single assist to his name.

The average position map below, taking Van der Vaart’s (number 11) first half on the right wing into consideration, shows just how far forward he played against Villa and if Redknapp continues to play him in his second-half position against Villa, the £8m man could, conceivably, be regarded as an Out of Position forward in the FPL game.

A quick look at the two top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders sees Nani has 18 shots in 7 games and Florent Malouda has 19 shots in 7 games. Indeed, Van der Vaarts goal attempts per game is not just more in line with top forwards, it is actually, per game, the highest in the league so far.

Dimitar Berbatov2373.28
Andy Carroll2273.14
Kenwyne Jones2163.5
Didier Drogba2173
Rafael Van der Vaart1744.25

While his away returns have been just (2,2) it’s hard to ignore his performances at White Hart Lane. Van der Vaart has scored (9, 15) picking up the 3 Bonus Points in both home games he’s played. He’s already risen 0.1m in price since Saturday’s game and, with the second two week international break of the season now upon us, expect plenty more managers take the plunge before Gameweek 8 commences.

I am not sure Wenger will rest Fab for the Champs. League - Arsenal are already off to a flyer in an easy group. He will rightly see the need for premiership points as a priority, which means 90 mins of Fab until or unless they are 4-0 up...

      Depends who?

I've got Gohouir who for 4 mil is a bargain and has started every game, there is apparently a chance his place is under threat when the Caldwells are back.

Nzogbia is a decent shout, bap machine and could be playing for a move.

Alvaraz, bit more than Gohouri in price but is captain so more assured of starts long term. Rodellaga could be a decent differential but there are probably better cheaper options.

West Ham do have good fixtures but any team with Upson at the back will concede, Parker is there main man but again there are probably better options at similar prices.

He is out with a hamstring, not a groin injury. He was (allegedly) "just short" of being back for that....another two weeks should be more than enough.

Sunday proved how vital Fab is to Arsenal. It isn't like Fat Frank missing for Chelsea or Rooney for United. They simply can't afford the luxury of giving him an extended rest when he's fit to play.

Biggest ever rise is 0.3, normally a handful of people do it in a season - Van Der Vaart will be one of those people.

He'll need another 90k to make that (which he will get) but then he'll need another 120k after that to hit an unprecedented fourth rise - which I can't see happening, but never say never.

Fabs may drop, may aswell have someone in there who might go up so why not Nani in there for the moment, for the next game and then Fabregas IN the following week. He may not be involved for Brum game, and if he is, you are on WC and make the switch quickly, no point having him in your team where he could drop in value

Has any one read the article on the half time bust up between tevez and mancini? can't post the link, im using my phone. But tevez was "furious" with mancini's negative tactics during the newcastle game. Should be interesting to see how this effects his game time and city's tactics, if at it does.

Exactly, so if he can't be dropped, must he be kept happy? therefore perhaps a slight change in tactics, maybe more game time for johnson (trying to convince myself to keep him). Or is it simply a case of, im the coach get over it....

Transfer activity has slowed way down today, will just have to wait for Friday/Saturday with people not realising there are no games and next Friday week for my potential double risers Alex/Toure/Odemwingie/Adam etc, at least I have my feet firmly on the Van Der Vaart bus, WC isn't as much fun trying to play the money game as once you have made certain switches you have to leave them in your team!

The money game just didn't work for me last week. Every player I wanted to buy was going up at some point so i had to get them all in early & had practically no room to gain on others. I guess I still gained but in a different way

Fabregas will outscore VDV no question, a lot dearer of course so you have to look at what areas of your team are being weakened by bringing him in.

Fabs, Drogba, Tevez will feature heavily in captain choices this year IMO

I think it is fast becoming impossible to have Malouda and Drogba as options open up in midfield and up front, I know I am looking at taking Malouda OUT for Arteta in order to free up enough cash to have:

Liverpool? I'd say clean sheets will begin again in a couple of weeks, Woy will be working hard to put that right first, that's what he did at Fulham. Konch back in for me fairly soon.

Even away Liverpool will keep clean sheets, but it's definitely a wait and see at the mo!

speculation: rooney plays a blinder for england and the country begin to forgive him.

last seasons form starts to return, berba suffers.

nani will not suffer. if you watch Man U closely all Rooney ever does is look for Nani immediately and pass to him, he's used to playing that way cos of Ronaldo.

Think I've just had an apithany(sp?)! I really want vdv. But I'll have to take a points hit to get him. Plus downgrade a player to a really low level (4.5 striker). I've just realised I can't have all the good players and any hits taken will impact my score in the long run.

Basically I just need to sit tight and don't chase last weeks points. All be it vdv the three weeks points

Indeed, sometimes you do need to balance how it all works out. VDV may do well, but if it'll cost you [x] points and may need dodgy players bringing in then the scales can certainly balance to him (or any player for any manager) not being worth investment.

      And it's an epiphany.

it's these risks that make fantasy football great. I put Berba in week before the Liverpool game, last year I got 25 points from JD's 5 against Wigan after putting him in for that gameweek.

The evidence suggests VDV is going to be a monster this season, but you never know.

Well if you love him so much you should put him in your team every signle game and let the auto sub do its bit.

As Andy says below - you can Never trust SAF. If you want to take that risk with the ManU midfield than you need to take it on the chin when it backfires.

          BTW, you lost 3-1=2 pts?

Ferguson said he needed 10 days rest. You can't trust him or Awesome Wanger. If ferguson thought he'd keep rooney outta the limelight for long terms benefits, he'd say he was injured. He's done it many times before, it's not the websites fault.

Rooney's stage is set to get the nation back on his side by perfoming well for England, Ferguson knows this, especially after what happened with David Beckham. Without Rooney on fire, Man U will win diddly squat other than maybe the Carling cup to equal Liverpool's 3 in a row record.

Well to be fair Fergie said he was out, it was as much a surprise to me as a United supporter to see him play on Saturday, it was from the horses mouth to begin with, after last year and the Bayern match and Rooney, I would only believe half of what SAF says on injuries

Sadly i think people need to choose if you want a relitavely balanced side:
    you can have three of:
Malouda, Nani, Van De Vart and Tevez
*assuming you want Drogba and Fabregas

He's expensive as a defender but still good value overall and with a 3(?) assists and him constantly getting in goal scoring position and rising price making him hard to get he's become undroppable for me.

Plus what I like about players like Cole in good defensive sides, he can literally do nothin in a game and get 6 points if his team gets a cleanie, a mid or forward has to create an assist of goal to get points, I no sometimes they can be fortunate assists etc but in general they have to make a mark to score well.

that article at the beginning showing Ashley Cole being more attacking than Lampard, work of genius! Wildcarded him in gameweek 2 and been top of my mini league since gameweek 1.

Had a goal disallowed with an expert finish for a marginal offside last game as well.

If he carries on we'll be able to plat Kieron Gibbs LB and Cashley as a full blown winger whose class at keeping England solid defensively! Winner!

I think sensible to just pick one with spurs other commitments i think they may struggle around champions league games plus midfield is looking the strongest area at present and theres the covering of the big teams ie United (Nani) Chelsea (Malouda) Arsenal (Fab) plus some good value cheapies ie Adams Nzog Ethers etc.

        Yeah I hear you mate.

I just don't believe in thinking about "coverage". I'm not saying I am right and others are wrong here, I just feel each player should be assessed individually.

I can easily cover United, Chelsea and Arsenal with Scholes, Mikel and Sagna but I don't think it would be good.

Similarly I think Bale and VDV should be valued individually as well, and not being looked at as mutually exclusive.

Hope this made sense, I'm tired and it's hard to explain things properly in another language.

I agree with that, no point getting a player from chelsea like mikel just because he plays for chelsea but the top sides are obviously gonna win more games than lesser sides, therefore they will probably score more goals, therefore more chance there best attacking players will score well. Theres no right or wrong answer, I understand ur views mate.

Absolutely, that is what I was hoping you'd say because that also means that all the good players from good sides will have better chances to score goals than players in lesser sides (generally).

Therefore I feel both VDV and Bale should be good IF you believe their individual value is good and you believe in Tottenham. I feel almost everyone is ignoring the fact that you can perfectly well have both.

There are a good few touting Bale & VdV as a pairing, individually they are both excellent prospects but the only midfield pairing I'd consider is Lampard and Malouda. Spurs won't win the league, they have a good chance of 4/5/6th ish so giving them two of my precious midfield slots isn't going to happen.
However a good thing on having VdV is that if he loses form/gets injured and Bale starts to generate the returns he has deserved then its an easy downgrade to swap them back. Happy days.

I know what you mean AP, but my basic strategy is to look at who I think will finish where in the table and who will be their biggest goal scorers/providers. So come the end of the season I think it will be
                Chelsea
                Man Utd
                Man City
                Arsenal
                Spurs
Or similar. So I have Malouda and Drogba from Chelsea, Nani and Berbatov from Man Utd, Fabregas from Arsenal and VdV from Spurs. The missing link is Man City - I cant really afford their main attacking player (Tevez) and I dont think the rest of their attacking players will generate the returns necessary in light of rotation and their defensive set up, so I can live without them. I would however like to squeeze in one of their defenders if possible.

yeah he will, yet i think that'd be wrong, i'm ever so sure with VDV, can't find a stat anywhere which disproves this:

he's happy married, so form/personal life taken care of

he was a bit part player at Real, so he has plenty to prove, you can tell how hungry he is

27 in the prime of his life, not playing much last few years means his body will more like a 25 year old

1 in 3 over his entire career, highly creative from the age of 17

maybe why people don't rate him so highly is because he hid away in Germany for 3 years, then never really figured at real

he's a bit of a luxury player; managers would've been reluctant to take him before in that he needs a free role and in modern football that's often a luxury you cannot afford

I could go on...he will thrive

Torres is getting downgraded for me... Proper downgraded. I'm looking at 4.5m strikers- Varney or DJ Campbell seem reasonable options for that price, any Blackpool followers out there to recommend which one?

2 expensive and 1 cheapie seems to be the only way to go with injuries (Rooney/Torres/RVP) and form (Rooney/Torres) to the top strikers this year. I think there was alot of talk about DJ Campbell here before Varney started banging them in, would be a ballsy decision to ignore Varney at the moment and go for DJ Campbell

Sorry JU, no offence, but I think that's a preposterous statement.

I can see why people right now might be attracted to Varney, but choosing him over Campbell is really not ballsy, not in the least. It's just a choice made based on recent points scoring, which is fine.

He's not really banging them in, he's scored 2 goals in 5 weeks - while Campbell still has 1 - and fallen over for 2 penalties.

I can understand wholly why people would now like Varney, nothing wrong with that, but I would still be choosing Dudley right now Jonny, and don't think it requires any kind of balls. Just a choice between 2 reasonable options.

Going for Varney is more of a ballsy move. He has never been prolific, not even in the lower leagues. DJ Campbell at least has some sort of history as a goalscorer.
