When it comes to results, Roberto Mancini can be well and truly satisfied with the start to the season. City sit second in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Chelsea and that start, coupled with the victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s side, has led to claims that they are currently the biggest threat to Chelsea’s title charge. And yet news of a half-time spat between Mancini and his skipper Carlos Tevez in Sunday’s narrow victory over Newcastle, has led to the City boss acknowledging that changes are required.

It’s suggested that Tevez’ concerns, expressed so vociferously in the Eastlands half-time dressing room, concerned Mancini’s tactics. We’ve seen over the first seven games of the season that the Italian has adopted a cautious 4-5-1 formation, founded on a rock solid platform afforded him by a defensive midfield shield consisting of Yaya Toure, Gareth Barry and Nigel De Jong. In Fantasy terms this can be seen to have limited City’s appeal as a source of attacking points.

For a side that’s challenging for top spot, surprisingly only Tevez has presented a reliable Fantasy prospect, with Adam Johnson apparently threatened by the risk of rotation and James Milner rarely given the opportunity to get in goalscoring positions. City have scored 9 goals but our Members Opta stats show that they rank third bottom in terms of “Goal Attempts” – with just 59 efforts on goal; only Blackburn and Wolves have had fewer. That stat clearly illustrates the fact that City aren’t near firing on all cylinders as an attacking force.

That could well change in the near future. Significantly, yesterday’s reports stated that Mancini is looking to change the system, claiming that the current setup is “out of necessity”…

“Adebayor has just recovered from injury, [Mario] Balotelli not so. Without flying full backs like [Jérôme] Boateng and [Aleksandar] Kolarov, who can push forward, I’ve had to adjust the team to get results and stay in touch with the leaders. But only until everyone is back and fit.”

Such a statement not only suggests that we will see a more attacking approach from City, heightening the appeal of the likes of Milner and Tevez, but also that both Kolarov and Boateng have key roles to play in his future system. This would not only hint that these two look likely first choice options at the full-back positions, but also that they will be given the freedom to provide an attacking outlet.

Both Kolarov and Boateng have stalled as prospects due to injury, but both are now close to kick-starting their City careers. Boateng has started the previous two matches and would now see installed at right-back. Kolarov meanwhile has returned to training and could be in line for a return against Blackpool a week on Saturday.

While Boateng has the likes of Micah Richards and Pablo Zabeletta as competition for the right-back role, Kolarov will have to see off the challenge from an out-of-position Joleon Lescott and in the long-term, the threat of Wayne Bridge. To my money, the Serbian looks to have the more secure role as a result. Kolarov is also arguably the bigger threat to opponents – possessing a hammer of a left-foot which will surely fire in efforts on goal if he is afforded the freedom and room to explore the opponents half.

Kolarov is currently priced at 5.7 in the Fantasy Premier League game, with Boateng at 5.8. They would both present a route to City’s strong defensive potential which has, to this point provided 4 clean sheets. Whether Mancini’s new system and tactics will lessen their defensive resolve is something we can only speculate on. However, it’s clear that both Kolarov and Boateng are firmly in his the City manager’s plans as not only key defenders, but also major components in a new approach which may well see City unshackles themselves as an attacking force.

If you feel the need for further research, you can of course read our full Scout Reports of Kolarov and Boateng carried out in the pre-season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

No way am I getting stuck at the bottom of the page
    My team is:
    Jaask
    Jones Enrique O’Shea
    Malouda Nani Bale Barton
    Drogba Tevez Berbatov(c)
    Subs: Foster Cleverley Faye Alex
    0.2 in bank
    I have two free transfers

    I’m thinking:
Alex –> Salcido Coleman Elmohamady (which one?)
    and possibly
    Bale –> Van der Vaart
    any suggestions?
should I hold onto to one free transfer?

Had a match where everything went wrong today, after conceding 5 goals in 4 games I was confident...... We were 4-1 down at halftime. 🙁

We drew 5-5 after they scored a last minute goal 🙁

Today wasn't a total loss, the dressing room and physical contact with boys in shorts was cool 🙂

There's nothing wrong with going for Nzog, but I just don't think it's worth taking a hit to bring him in for an away game.

Arteta is at home to a dodgy Liverpool team, so could be worth it for the upcoming gameweek.

Depends if you are looking short term or long term also.

ya me too unless injured of course. he's too stable and consistently picks up bonus pts. as he's the center piece for everton imo. one of the strongholds i built my original team around.

can't find a place for nani though unless i free up funds by selling the likes of cole or droba, which i definitely don't want to do.

already did for fabs as i can't afford both unless i drop drogs. i basically decided on the basis that drogs is more important than malouda for chelsea coverage as lamps is due back and will take some of malouda's pts. also think that if cesc can manage to stay healthy that he'll be tops in terms of midfield pts.

Who to bench and who to capt. out of my front 8 for GW8...

    Malouda - VDV - Nani - Yaya - Nolan
    Drogba - Tevez - Carroll

    Tough one, ain't it?

        Bench Adam obviously

Capt? I would normally say Fabs - but is he likely to be eased in, e.g. off after 60 or even starting on the bench? If so, then Drogba

i did that last week away to liverpool and it bit me along w/elmo. they're at home and he always picks up the bonus which makes me hesitant to ever bench him now, kind of like arteta. and yes, have same hesitation about fabs as I see him only playing about 50-60 tops.

pissed off hardly describes it. but that's part of the games i suppose and we all run into it at some point. would of, should of, could of...still thought i made the right decisions given the match-ups, but you never know, which makes it the best game on the planet.

I was considering benching Malouda, given that City have got Blackpool. Obviously if he's a doubt that would solve my dilemma!

Was going to capt. Tevez for same reason - Blackpool defence

Hey guys you think it's worth a hit to get in Nani?
Looks like a season keeper and WBA at home is a really nice fixture
Hoping I haven't missed the boat though!
Thinking Alex, Bale => Elmo, Nani
Then Gerrard => Fabregas the following week
Would be my first hit of the season, which is why I'm weary
    Team in link
    Any thoughts would be great

tough price for a defender, i picked him up from gw 1 at 7.5 and even that was a lot for me seeing that i have no others higher than 5.5. i'd wait for a better run of fixtures as his price can't climb that much higher- he'll probably max at 8.

I never touched drogba last season and got about 4000th would have been top 1000 if not for 212 worth of point hits. I need to follow my heart and not fantasy head. The players in my team i'm not 100% are jara, adams and dembele.

All games are very local so we all go seperately. Travelling together happens afterwards when we win. Won the last 2 grand finals so you can imagine the damage. Playing the top grade this season so making it a hattrick will be alot harder.

Why? He skilfully picked such a good team, that he hardly needed to change it.

Takes a lot of skill, that.

Agree, his squad was good from the beginning. If it was picked on FFS before the season started, he would have gotten some criticism but some would have said "good team" also.

Good evening fellas! Apologize in advance for the long-ish post! After a couple of knee-jerk transfers on the weekend I've managed to keep myself away (somewhat) from my squad and decide what I want to do moving forward. I'd appreciate some input on if I should make any other moves this week and some proposed moves for the upcoming gameweeks. My squad as of now for the following week is:

    Hahnemann
    Konchesky - Enrique - Shawcross
    Malouda - Nani (C) - VDV - Dempsey - Y. Toure
    Drogba - Berbatov

Bench: Foster - Carrol - Jara - Alex

So I've already made 2 transfers for a 4 point hit (Gerrard -> Nani and Bale -> VDV) to avoid Nani and VDV's price rises and Bale's drop. Now I'm left with a couple things to ponder:

    1) Do I get rid of Alex or Konchesky? Both are injured at the moment and I'm still not guaranteed that Konchesky will start. If he doesn't I'll be forced to play Jara and United which I don't really want to do. Before last week I was planning to move Alex to either Samba/Salcido and eventually move Konchesky for Mummy but these injuries seem to have forced my hand?

    2) If Fab is fit (which it appears he is) should I bring him in for Malouda? I was planning to make this move in GW-10 but if he's fit now and I decided to captain him, would it be worth it?

Which of the two (if any) would I be better with doing? I know people always preaching to never take a hit for a defender but considering the circumstances might be worth it? Though I suppose it would require my new defender to get a CS just for me to break even?

Also who to bench between Y. Toure and Carrol you reckon? Both have enticing fixtures!

Appreciate anyone who took the time to read this but even more for those who respond 😉

      I think benching Carroll's a risky move.

      Translation: I haven't benched him.

Agree, if you can't play Carroll at home to Wigan than it's time to sell. You have a really strong team so you will have these problems weekly.

Yeah I can't see myself benching him in the end tbh. Benching Dempsey at home playing OOP would be tough not to mention Toure away to Blackpool but I think the later will end up finding himself as 1st sub.

id sit back for now, you dont want too take a 8point hit and then someone else get hurt over the weekend but if u do make the move id look at a city defender instead of alex, would prob bench Dempesy outa your front 8

If I get confirmation that Konchesky will play this upcoming GW then I'll try and just sit back and grit my teeth. Prob used my transfer next week to either get rid of Alex or Konch then GW 10 bring in Fab and possibly Arteta.

I think benching Dempsey this week at home would be tough! Bonus points in the last 2 games and playing OOP. Tough call.

Cheers. Might have to do just that. I just worry about Fabregas coming back and running amuck this week. I really wasn't expecting him to be fit so had made the initial plans to get him in after the City game.

I always get nervous if I don't play Adam, the week he scored 15 I benched him in favour of Malouda.

    Thought for the day!

Seems everyone posting their teams these days is switching Gerrard to Fabregas. Surely there's a fair chance that Gerard will outscore Fabregas moving forward?

Terrible as Liverpool have been, Gerard has outscored Fabregas over the last four years, and this year (ok Fab has been injured, but Arsenal players are ALWAYS injured). And Gerard is third in the form table.

    Just saying...

Fabregas has been injured every season at some points. His points per game clearly beat Gerrard.

the other problem with gerrard is he tends to get the occasional goal but what makes cesc so useful is he tends to have huge pts hauls when fit making him good cpt material also a lot of people stay away from him and rvp because of the injury risk making then great assets to have WHEN FIT. His injuries piss me off too but you gotta love the guy's class
