Having started the campaign with two heavy defeats -conceding ten goals and scoring none- Wigan were marked by many as doomed for the drop even before August was finished. Add to the mix their star man, Charles N’Zogbia, was looking for a way out, and it’s fair to say the start of the season was something of a nightmare for those around the DW Stadium.

Two months on and Roberto Martinez has turned the club’s fortunes around impressively. Having subsequently tightened up at the back, Wigan have lost just one of their last six games and, over the last couple of games, are now starting to play again. The Latics found the net only twice in their first six games but have now netted two goals in each of their last two games, with N’Zogbia’s return to form being fundamental to the upswing in their attacking fortunes.

Whereas last season saw N’Zogbia used predominantly as an inside-out right winger, Martinez is utilising his talents on the winger’s natural left flank this time round, too. With Hugo Rodallega dropping to the bench last weekend at St James‘ Park, N’Zogbia played as a left-winger in Wigan’s 4-3-3 set-up and silenced the home crowd with a quickfire brace as Martinez’s side took the game to their hosts.

As the above passing heatmaps show, against Newcastle 90% of his passes came down the left hand side of the pitch at Newcastle whereas in Wigan’s previous game, the 2-0 home win over Wolves, it was near an even split as the Frenchman attacked Mick McCarthy’s side on both flanks. A third of his passes against Newcastle were in the final third, whereas two-third of all passes against Wolves were in the final third, showing just how much of a menace he is to the opposition.

Regardless of where he plays, however, N’Zogbia (number 10) -as these average position maps from the two aforementioned games illustrate- tends to be the further forward of Wigan’s players, and with other similarly priced midfielders Chris Brunt and Charlie Adam scoring similarly so far this season, this fact may swing the odds in his favour for those considering budget midfielders.

Of the four goals Wigan have scored in these two games, N’Zogbia has played a part in three of them, scoring two and assisting one, in a pair of performances that have seen him pick up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in both games. Having picked up 5 Fantasy League Points in Wigan’s first five games, N’Zogbia’s price has plummeted from £6m to £5.4m, but the winger has subsequently racked up an impressive 28 points in his last 3 games.

Wigan have something of a mixed bag of fixtures in their next six (BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun) but as he begins to replicate the form that saw him bag 5 goals, 7 assists and a fantastic 31 Bonus Points last season, Charles N’Zogbia is showing just how important he is to Martinez’s side as they continue to climb the league.

I asked this yesterday, but just as the Roonews came out, so it got rather lost. Do people think Jerome Thomas is going to be back in the side now he’s back from his injury? If he is then I'll keep him in and deal with the many other issues affecting my side, if not then I'll get rid.

afternoon all, could any of you wise heads help with a betting question?
willhill have a special on the '2nd premiership manager to leave' i'm struggling with the wording; does this mean the next manager to leave (counting MON as the 1st) or the manager after the next?
    cheers

im going to be away for the rest of the week...so about to do:
    Evans->Coleman
    Ferguson->Nzogbia
    (-4points)
Leaves me with JUST enough cash to do Gerrard to Fabs next week.
I know it's pretty band-wagony but Evans is deadweight and I dont like having both Albrighton and Ferguson as they're too inconsistent. Sound ok?

tevez ronaldo rooney was a trio to be reckoned with....rooney berbatov hernandez isnt

frankly drawing to fulham everton (WBA) isnt shocking its a reality that uniteds debt (even though glazers say is long term) just like liverpool is killing the club and united cant deal with it anymore

    b) carroll to campbell
    ferguson to brunt/adam 8pt hit
    c) carroll to campbell
    knight to bosingwa 8pt hit
    d) do nothing and hope that campbell stays quiet vs brum

Good team, but in 3 weeks, it might not be quite as nice. It's usually not worth planning specific transfers more than two weeks in advance. Look back two weeks. Where was your team? How has your emphasis changed?

alex returning should have no efeect cos bosingwa plays on the right, although he could be rested now and again cos he's only just back from a long injury

I know that but my point was that it would seem harsh to drop Ivanovic in that case when Alex is back and could Ivanovic instead hold the right back spot.

Agreed. Plenty will disagree but I don't see Alex being a guaranteed starter once he returns from injury. I think its going to be Ivanovic and Terry in central defence with Bosingwa at right back provided he does not have recurring injuries.

Away to Man u I'm sure Ivan would get the not over Boswinga... vs West Ham for instance, maybe Boswinga as they'll be attacking more.

Pirates of the Carribbean - coz I saw a pirate
Last King of Scotland - gravestone thingy
                    Million Dollar Baby.

I don't really have the patience for this sort of thing, especially when I know f*ck all about films...

gw9- bale and ethers to n'zog and adam (4 point hit)
      gw10- malouda to fabregas
      gw 11- carroll to tevez??

works ok-ish with the fixtures missing out on tevez vs wolves away GW 10.

I agree with Jampies all the time, Alex is a better CB than Ivanovic and in my view Terry aswell, Alex will start more games at CB than Ivanovic and Ivanovic will rotate with Fereirra/Bosingwa for RB and cover CB whenever Alex and Terry are rested/injured

Yep, an annoying little scrum-half I am. But am going back to football soon. Been playing a lot of school football matches and have been doing really well.

I played scrum half/wing/fullback in School and in Uni, away from all the rough stuff, although I did break 3 fingers in a ruck once, put my hand in to get the ball and craaaackkkk!

Don't know about that, Spurs will go there with the defence locked down, 6-7 behind the ball, I think it will be a 2-1 affair to Milan

          its not about that

he brings creativity to tottenhams attack and allows them more possession higher up the pitch and allows bale to concentrate more on defence then offence

this will perhaps bring bale to midfield with assou ekotto back...defencive problems anyone

They arent massive favourites they are at evens which I still think represents good value as Liverpool are without Torres and Gerrard apparently. Plus Napoli doing well in Serie A

Fook, I am out tonight, would love to hear what he has to say alright, "United are in major decline" was his line before this news, actually, watching him tonight would only be depressing and frustrating, he never has anything good to say about United these days

What do people think to this as my WC team?

    Robinson /Mignolet
    Bosingwa/Coleman/Elmohamady/Jara/Simpson
    Fabregas/Van der Vaart/Nani/N'Zogbia/Albrighton
    Drogba/Berbatov/Tevez

My main issue in fact is whether it's sensible to WC now or hold on (my current team is linked and is not too bad at mo although plenty I'd like to do). If I wait, I suspect I'll never be able to afford the proposed WC team given imminent price rises

    Do you think it's worth:

    1. doing WC now
    2. holding on to WC

mignolet place posibly under threat. Bosingwa and simpson also possibly not first teamers...

maybe bosingwa to samba/shawcross/salcido, mignolet to foster??

also if you want albrighton to adam, berba to some other striker could work.

So is it worth Samba out and Coleman in?
My defence is generally weak but mids and strikers are great - see link.

I know coleman has a tough next fixture but I have no pressing need for a transfer although lack of arsenal is a concern????

      I made the move.

For the next few fixtures, Coleman will do well (if he holds down a place, but that's a risk I'm willing to take).

Also, make the move now and you save 0.2 value. Coleman will go up at least 0.1 and Samba will drop 0.1 by the end of next week, at least.

Should I add Berbatov and Torres, or Berbatov and Fabregas to my lineup?
