Having started the campaign with two heavy defeats -conceding ten goals and scoring none- Wigan were marked by many as doomed for the drop even before August was finished. Add to the mix their star man, Charles N’Zogbia, was looking for a way out, and it’s fair to say the start of the season was something of a nightmare for those around the DW Stadium.

Two months on and Roberto Martinez has turned the club’s fortunes around impressively. Having subsequently tightened up at the back, Wigan have lost just one of their last six games and, over the last couple of games, are now starting to play again. The Latics found the net only twice in their first six games but have now netted two goals in each of their last two games, with N’Zogbia’s return to form being fundamental to the upswing in their attacking fortunes.

Whereas last season saw N’Zogbia used predominantly as an inside-out right winger, Martinez is utilising his talents on the winger’s natural left flank this time round, too. With Hugo Rodallega dropping to the bench last weekend at St James‘ Park, N’Zogbia played as a left-winger in Wigan’s 4-3-3 set-up and silenced the home crowd with a quickfire brace as Martinez’s side took the game to their hosts.

As the above passing heatmaps show, against Newcastle 90% of his passes came down the left hand side of the pitch at Newcastle whereas in Wigan’s previous game, the 2-0 home win over Wolves, it was near an even split as the Frenchman attacked Mick McCarthy’s side on both flanks. A third of his passes against Newcastle were in the final third, whereas two-third of all passes against Wolves were in the final third, showing just how much of a menace he is to the opposition.

Regardless of where he plays, however, N’Zogbia (number 10) -as these average position maps from the two aforementioned games illustrate- tends to be the further forward of Wigan’s players, and with other similarly priced midfielders Chris Brunt and Charlie Adam scoring similarly so far this season, this fact may swing the odds in his favour for those considering budget midfielders.

Of the four goals Wigan have scored in these two games, N’Zogbia has played a part in three of them, scoring two and assisting one, in a pair of performances that have seen him pick up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in both games. Having picked up 5 Fantasy League Points in Wigan’s first five games, N’Zogbia’s price has plummeted from £6m to £5.4m, but the winger has subsequently racked up an impressive 28 points in his last 3 games.

Wigan have something of a mixed bag of fixtures in their next six (BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun) but as he begins to replicate the form that saw him bag 5 goals, 7 assists and a fantastic 31 Bonus Points last season, Charles N’Zogbia is showing just how important he is to Martinez’s side as they continue to climb the league.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    On MOTD2 it looked like Coleman crossed for Cahill to score and Coleman tried to hug Cahill and Cahill pushed him off and then Coleman went GRRRRR and pushed Cahill in the back. It looked like that anyway. Cahill should have given Coleman a high five the arrogant aussie.

    Very simple recipe for picking a decent team

    the dream front 8 is going to be
    Fab Malouda vdV Arteta Nani
    Drog Tevez Berb

    pick 6 and choose 2 of the execllent array of 5-5.5mln cheapies out there (preferably 2 that rotate well). or pick 5 and stick Cole in your defence.

    For your defence get Elmo, Coleman - both OOP.
    Try to get Konch or Samba
    and then just fill up the rest of the team with whoever you can afford without doubling/tripling up on teams too much

      nice post.. Im aiming for exactly that! I dont have Berbs or Tevez but have two rotating cheap strikers and playing 3-5-2. Should have Arteta VdV Malouda Fabs and Nani by gw 10 all going well.

      Alex --> Coleman and
      Ethers --> Fabregas.

      Should just about work out.

      Unless you play 4 or 5 at the back, you will ALWAYS have to pick 2 from Adam, Elmander and Carroll. Fine if you think they'll bring in the points, but I wouldn't want to be in that position. Although looking at the rest of your team, I'm not sure how you could upgrade one of them easily... have you got any cash in the bank?

          I think you can live without Malouda if you have Drogba, plus Fabregas is going to outscore him between now and the end of the season, in my opinion.

          I also think you can manage without Berbatov if you have Nani- particularly as Drogba is pretty much a given, and I think Tevez could easily be considered one too...

          then do it. first third of the season i concentrate a lot on my team value. makes the rest much easier.

          take my piece on team construction above... you should be able to afford 6 top players. many will only be able to afford 5...

    Foster

    Elmo, Cole, O'shea

    Malouda, Barton, Nani, Morrison

    Drogba, Tevez, Carroll

    this is what I'm thinkin of rite now but I got options on the bench as well(Nasri, Dann, Coleman). Have I got it right or should dann/nasri be playing?

    Nolan > Adam (free transfer)
    Bale > Arteta 4 (point hit)

    How does these two transfers look for GW9? Although I do have Foster and Dann so would Adam be a good option after all, going against my defence?

    Dann Elmohamady Konchesky

        No, my team is going up by 200k, minimum tonight. I haven't even been concentrating on it, the only thing I have done to get price rises is VDV and Tevez in last week at the start. Only so I could afford it though. Also getting Coleman before he rises tonight so I can afford Fabs.

        Well if like Stan Collymore said he could walk away next summer for 5million to close his contract he could get 500k a week wages somewhere like City or Real and he would still be cheap. Nuts when all he does is kick a ball but that sort of money would turn anyones head and he would have a better chance of more medals and he would be rested more too. So he is only going to kick a ball for a few more years so he needs the cash for all that gambling and high class hookers lucky scouser.

            And then coming out with the fact that he wants to leave slap bang between the 2 transfer windows, leaving the club and the manager who made him the player he is now in a serious pickle?
