A routine night for both Chelsea and Arsenal, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side not quite producing “fantastic” on plastic but doing more than enough to repel and kill off their hosts in Moscow. The Gunners meanwhile fielded Cesc Fabregas and duly raised their game in a “score at will” 5-1 mauling of Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates.

Chelsea’s victory over Spartak saw Yuri Zhirkov flourish on home soil with a superb strike to set them on their way; Nicolas Anelka provided the finish for the second and Chelsea’s defence, with Petr Cech prominent did the rest.

Ancelotti’s lineup was strong and included both Ashley Cole and Michael Essien; both had been doubts going into the game and the Chelsea boss confirmed following teh game that the pair had both come out unscathed from their run-outs on the plastic pitch. Zhirkov came into the midfield for ankle victim Ramires, while Salomon Kalou made a return from injury to replace Gael Kakuta as part of a front three with Anelka and Florent Malouda.

Knocks and scrapes could emerge before Saturday’s encounter with Wolves and, while we’re still waiting on confirmed news on the situation with Alex, Ancelotti did confirm that Didier Drogba as in the frame for a return to action following the illness that kept him out against Moscow and Villa.

“I think that we had good news from Cobham today and he will be able to play the next game against Wolves.”

Going forward, Chelsea’s position in their group is now strong but Ancelotti hinted that they will not take the return with Spartak lightly as Chelsea go all out to top the group. That return tie is played on November 3, four days after Chelsea go to Blackburn.

“We have to stay focused for the next game, we want to arrive in first place, this is our aim and we have the possibility to do this, but we don’t have to give rest to other players, the Champions League is important for all the games…We’re not giving up on the match in London, we’ll go there to try and play well and get points.”

In truth it’s difficult to see Ancelotti resting players for the tricky Ewood tie ahead of the clash with Spartak, so last night’s result looks to be a decent outcome for owners of Malouda, Cole, Essien and Drogba.

Over at the Emirates Arsenal simply breezed past Shakhtar Donetsk, routing them 5-1 with skipper Cesc Fabregas returning to orchestrate matters. His inclusion in the side was the big headline for Fantasy Managers and his 63 minutes last night surely made him a certainty for the teamsheet at Eastlands this weekend, while the performance gave assurance of his likely impact now he’s back in an Arsenal shirt. Fantasy Managers will now be looking at their squads and searching for a route to recruit the Arsenal playmaker.

Fabreas took up his usual midfield role and saw that Abou Diaby dropped to the bench with Thomas Rosicky coming into the side on the right and Samir Nasri switching to the left, ousting Andrei Arshavin.

That move by Arsene Wenger has to ring alarm bells for Fantasy Managers and emphasises that suddenly, options in the Arsenal squad are plentiful. Theo Walcott also made a return last night from the bench and his name has to be added to a midfield mix that has Nasri, Arshavin, Diaby all under threat.

Jack Wilshere’s domestic three-match ban for his red received against Birmingham clears the clutter for the time being, but while he continued to impress with a smartly taken goal last night, he will add to the options further on his return in Gameweek 11. Owners of Arsenal’s midfield assets will surely be looking to make the upgrade to the untouchable Fabregas then, or chance a period where rest and rotation is a constant threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Oh man you make it sound so simple!

I'm not sure I'm man enough to take Malouda out ahead Wolves at home, even for Cesc.

          I'm thinking:

          GW9: A Johnson > Adam
          GW10: Konchesky > Coleman & Bale > Fabregas (4 pointer)

Yeah i was suggesting the move for GW10 not this week. I think Konchesky>Coleman & Bale>Fabregas isn't a bad move. If you're able to resist a transfer this GW then it'd save you 4 pts but that's your call.

Watching the Gunners last night, Nasri seemed to be the best player on the pitch without a doubt. However Mark mentions about Walcott being back & Nasri, Arshavin, Diaby all under threat. So anyone have an idea of Arsenals likely starting XI like weekend?

Thats good for me, i'm thinking of going for Nasri over Fabs atleast for the next few weeks anyway. Just got enough cash to do J.Evans>Jones, Arteta>Nasri & Carroll>Chamakh. If any of their price changes then i'm fcukd so may have to take a reluctant hit for the 1st time.

I'd say Nasri's more or less guaranteed. Maybe Arsene has lost patience with Arshavin, competition there from both Walcott and Rosicky, who's a great little player, after all.

So who takes United penalties now? Giggs will if on the pitch but I reckon Berb may get duties. He used to have a great record and it was only the Carling Cup final effort that soured his name.

Fergie will want a regular to take them and not rely on Giggs just when he is on the pitch.

Nani may have ruined his chances this week. Doesn’t strike me as reliable taker anyway.

Berbatov for my money. He's a cool customer from 12 yards.

However, despite Rooney's imminent exit. Do we not think he'll still be on pens until he leaves United? Infact, how much gametime will Wayne likely get before January.

He missed against Fulham ages ago.

With form and confidence back since then, I don't see why he won't take over spot-kick duties.

I think he'll actually be first choice sans Rooney.

I am interested to know how much time, if any, Rooney will spend on the pitch for United between now and January, he has turned his back on the club by all accounts so will they field him where the home fans may be just as abusive as the away fans?!

I think Berbatov will be pen taker aswell, Nani did have that bad miss, and Berbatov was never guaranteed pens in the past because he was not guaranteed a spot in the starting 11. Will be interesting to see who plays at the weekend, Berbatov and Hernandez/Macheda/Owen? More interesting what happens tonight I suppose.

There's not doubt he represents good value.

As far as my team is concerned I'm happy with Drogba + 1 other forward + 1 cheap forward.

Right now I'm happy with Tevez as second striker. However, City's fixtures dry up around GW14 where coincidently United pick up. So I'm thinknig Berba could be a good shout from then on.

I'd just like to point out that differences aside Rooney will still be at Manchester United until January, I'd be extremely suprised if he was merely left to rot. Berbatov's influence may not grow as exponentially as some people are suggesting.

So many choices that on paper look good.

Drogba, Nani, Elmo are the only players I think are absolutely necessary at this point.

But from there, it's pros and cons weighing. Fabregas if he hits anything like his form last season will be a must-have.

Quick question for anyone who knows......

So I've had Fabs from teh start, as you will know he has dropped by 0.2 and is currently priced at 11.8m.

So he's back now and peopl are goingto start bringing him in and his price will rise ove rteh next few weeks.

If he rises by 0.2 (which he will) will I get my 0.2 back or just 0.1?

I.e. Will he need to go to 12.2 before I get my 12.0 back?

    Hope that makes sense?

If you bought him for say £12m and he rises back to £12m you will get the full £0.2m. Anything over that you get half. i.e. £0.1m for every £0.2m rise.

If he stays fit he will rise rapidly over the next few weeks so wouldn't worry.

Ok, my team's been riding high to this point which makes the wildcard i'm contemplating this week seem like lunacy but hear me through.

    Current team...
    Foster, Hahn
Mummy, Cole, Samba, Van Damme, Perch
    Malouda, Bale, Albrighton, Petrov, Nani
    Drogba, Tevez, Dembele

    My problems being
    In defence......
Mummy and Cole my only two defenders that are likely to start this weekend, and Samba has nasty fixtures after the ban. Hahn is also doing nothing for me. So would happily sell 4 of my back 7

    In midfield......
Bale to VDV seems essential. I desperately want to make room for Fabregas and Petrov can obviously be sacrificed, so thats 2 more transfers.

    Up front.....
Feel Odemwingie is a better cheap option than Dembele, also to fund Fabregas transfer i need to sell a big gun, have worked out if it is Drogba I can still afford a front 3 of Tevez, Berb, Odemwingie.

So all that considered is it logical to wildcard to end up with something along these lines...

    Foster, Gilks
    Mummy, Cole, Coleman, Simpson, Jara
    Fab, Nani, Malouda, VDV, Albrighton
    Tevez, Berb, Odemwingie
    0.1 to left over

My logic is that you have Nani, you can do without Berb. Whereas I don't think you can do without Drog even if you have Malouda. And Tevez is becoming essential unless Balotelli starts playing and ripping it up because none of their midfielders are at this point massive scorers (would definitely punt on Silva if it weren't for huge rotation).

Agree on Silva, but rotation puts me off too. The only way I can keep Drog with that midfield is to have two cheap stikers alongside him, if I tried to keep both Tevez and Drog my plans would fall apart completely.

I was hoping it might be a nice balance as it's
            Utd x2
            Chelsea x2
            Ars x1
            City x1

I'm in a massive dilema as, keeping Drog would mean i'd have to only have 5 players from these teams, which in turn reduces captaincy options, and stuffs me up more in a week when a couple of my big guns get rested.

Sadly not, i'd be 2.1 million short. Agree about the value of Drogba, it's just that the cash that can be freed up by selling him alows me to acheive so much elsewhere.

      Pretty team.

Something I would definitely consider having.

The only big downside is the lack of Drogba.

As a captain pick, Drogba is reliable as anything, and you need a captain. I'd rather have Drogba than Malouda, so that's what I'd do. Berb > Drogba, Malouda > Elmander.

          ha ha

Actually that is a suggestion that could work. I wouldn't need to do Tevez to Elmander either. If I went with my wildcard team but sold Malouda to finance it instead of drog then I could replace Malouda with a midfielder of up to 6.6 million

          So it boils down to...
          Berb and Malouda
          or
          Tevez and 6.6 (nzog/adam etc)

Drogs and 6.6 is better imo. Just choose your 6.6 wisely.

I'm starting to like Malouda less and less after looking at fixtures. He'll get rested when Chelsea's attacking players are all back in, with CL fixtures and everything. Kalou is back, and with Lampard coming in soon, he could take a spot away as well.

Cheers Camzy (although the suggestion doesn't quite work, Malouda > Elmander = midfield > forward).

One possible is that as i have two free transfers this week I could use them this week to patch things up a little and reconsider whether to wildcard next week (and so keeping Drog for the wolves game).

Dont like it personally as keeping Malouda over Drogba is not something i would personally do. I dont like Nani and Berbs together either. But again thats personal preference. Theres nothing wrong with the team though and Im sure it would score well.

However, i do believe that playing your Wildcard is perfectly acceptable, people worry too much about playing it. Dont let others tell you not to!

Nah IMO if you own Berbatov you keep him.

I have Carroll Berbatov Drogba and the only one I'd consider switching for someone else is currently Carroll... he's just not doing it... even someone like Varney could be a decent swap.

    With Alex in defence:

    Robinson (Carson)

    Coleman Alex Elmo Kolarov (Simpson)

    Malouda Nani Fabs Adam (Ferguson)

    Berbs Drog Carroll

    With Cole in defence:

    Robinson (Carson)

    Coleman Cole Elmo Kolarov (Simpson)

    VDV Nani Fabs Adam (N'Zog)

    Berbs Drogs Carroll

Still don't know if ditching Malouda is worth it, Cole will probably get a few less points than him but in the longterm VDV and N'zog would compensate for that..

You don't fancy 1 cheapy mid as bench fodder, thisway you will always have 1 quality mid or defender on your bench, which seems a shame. Are you also convinced an all cheapo defence is the way to go?

Well I agree with Jones, mummy and Coleman as already have mummy and Jones and planning Coleman maybe this week. I'm still holding out on the 1 big defender from Man C or Chelsea system as I have Hart and Alex and cannot bring myself to get rid of them. Even if Alex goes it would be for Bosingwa! Lol will be interesting if it works out or if its money wasted that I could have put into the mids. Cannot invest any more up front as have Drogs- Berbs - Tevez!

My plan calls for 2 Chelsea, 2 MCity, 2 M Utd, 1 Arse ( Fabs GW10 ) sort of gives me a balance from all the top sides.

        Evans has to go.

But your other two transfers I actually don't like. Remember that you have to bench one of your front 8 every week, and it'll most probably be N'Zog right? Sort of a waste to have N'Zog and not have him play. I'd keep Arteta. Downgrade Carroll and use the funds to do Malouda > Fabregas.

            True.

But Chamakh isn't guaranteed a place long term. Van Persie is coming back (yeah, you probably didn't remember him) and then there's the whole Fabregas issue.

The thing is, you just know Fabs will get something good in matches like WHam (H).

            He's worth the outlay imo.

Morning gents, how did your CL teams do?I played my wildcard for this matchday after having picked my way in a hole with the original team and the newly resurrected team climbed from 61,732 to 29,833 in the overall rankings.Scored 33 points last night(which is down to 30 now after making some substitutions) which brings the total to 141.B.t.w.,surely it isn't too risky to switch the armband from Ronaldo(9x2=18) to Messi who has got Copenhagen at home tonight?Other candidates are Eto'o,Pjanic and Pique, although of course except Eto'o none of them is a serious contender.

            gw10: ger -> fab

            gw9: jones -> coleman
            gw10: ger -> fab and bale -> adam (-4)

Fear factor part; a) bale may outscore adam this gw, b) bale drops, adam rises - just stopid to loose money that way..

You're equipped for a top 1000 run with that team. I wanted that frontline last week, and would have got something similar if Fabs was going to play.

The only upside of him not playing was giving me Ashley Cole. Now, I'm actually leaning more towards Cole than Malouda. I reckon he'll score better than Mal over the next few fixtures.
