Arsenal enjoyed a Carling Cup walk in the St James’ Park as they overpowered a second-string Newcastle in their own backyard. The fleet-footed Theo Walcott stole the show, notching a brace of goals to remind both Arsene Wenger and us Fantasy Managers of his devastating form before injury temporarily de-railed his campaign. Elsewhere, extra-time wins for Villa and West Ham saw them progress to the last eight in another night of cup squad rotation merriment…

Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner pushed their claims for starting roles with goals in the convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park. Walcott, in particular, looked sharp and provided plenty of concern for the home defence with his pace and movement. Given his outstanding start to the season, it will be interesting to see how Wenger deals with his availability for the forthcoming fixtures.

Wenger’s lineup last night saw Laurent Koscielny return from a back problem to bolster a defence that also included Johan Djourou, with Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs starting at full-back. Elsewhere the eleven was completed by a mix of players who are likely to find themselves on the bench against West Ham this weekend – Denilson, Carlos Vela and Craig Eastmond – and those who will be pushing for inclusion – Tomas Rosicky, Bendtner and of course Walcott. Despite the goalscoring feats, those three would seem likely to start life on the bench, such is the competition for starts. Gibbs will be a doubt however, he limped off early on with what has been reported as a knee injury – another niggle for the young left-back.

Cesc Fabregas was introduced mid-way through the second-half by Wenger as the Gunners boss look to sharpen up his skipper. Typically Fabregas contributed the assists for Bendtner’s second and Arsenal’s third.

Chris Hughton made a string of changes to his eleven, handing starts to the likes of Ryan Taylor, Tamas Kadar, Alan Smith, Haris Vuckic, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger – all of which are unlikely to trouble the teamsheet come the visit of Sunderland on Sunday.

The start for Wayne Routledge, and perhaps even Mike Williamson at the back, puts question marks over their inclusion in Sunday’s starting eleven. Routledge has lost his place of late and Jonas Gutierrez seems likely to continue on the left-flank. Williamson’s situation seems more secure in the short-term but with Sol Campbell and Steven Taylor battling back to fitness, his starting role is clearly coming under increased threat.

One final footnote, Joey Barton picked up a late booking last night – his fourth of the campaign putting him on the suspension tightrope. One more yellow and he faces a one-match ban; not a great scenario given the cauldron expected for Sunday’s local derby with Sunderland.

Aston Villa progressed to the last eight thanks to strikes from Emile Heskey and an extra-time winner from Stewart Downing. The victory came at a price though – Marc Albrighton seeing red for hauling back Burnley’s Wade Elliot; Albrighton will now miss Sunday’s local derby with Birmingham – a blow to his Fantasy owners who have already questioned his first XI security of late.

Houllier is quickly running out of attacking options for Sunday’s game with Gabby Agbonlahor already ruled out. John Carew will also be a doubt after pulling out of last night’s tie late on through illness. That meant that Ashley Young started the match in the strikers role, with Stephen Ireland pushed up in support. Ireland will now likely maintain his role “in the hole” against Birmingham, with Young shifted to a wide role and Heskey brought back in to lead the attack. Steve Sidwell looks set to get the opportunity to make a claim for a run of starts with club skipper Stylian Petrov sidelined for two months. Sidwell started last night and, given Albrighton’s suspension, looks set to get the nod again on Sunday. Stephen Warnock was suspended for last night’s tie having picked up his fifth booking of the season at the weekend – he will therefore make a return against Birmingham.

Victor Obinna and Manuel da Costa chose the Carling Cup to register their first goals of the season after weeks of threatening in the Premier League. The pair struck in extra-time to hand the Hammers’ passage to the last eight but it was the performance of the ever-reliable Scott Parker that caught the eye. Parker headed West Ham’s equaliser to take the tie into the extra period and provided the catalyst for much of the home side’s attacking play on the night.

Following his quality strike against United, Tony Pulis handed a start to Tuncay, slotting him alongside Kenwyne Jones up front against the Hammers. Jones had given Stoke an early lead from a Jermaine Pennant corner, but Tony Pulis was unable to keep both players on the pitch due to illness. Jones and Pennant were duly replaced in the second-half, a forced change which Pulis later identified as a turning point in the tie after the efforts of West Ham’s subs – Mark Noble and Victor Obinna – proved decisive factors in the win.

From a Fantasy perspective we now have to consider that Jones and Pennant, along with Matt Etherington who missed the game with a knock sustained against United, as doubts for the trip to Goodison this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Maybe .2. His injury flag will slow it down. Then there's every chance he could make the West Brom match in which case his flag is removed and then he'd be protected.

The thing that annoys me most about Tevez's injury is that it makes it so easy for everyone to get Fabs in. I have patiently kept enough cash in the bank so i could get him this week without a points hit (losing ground v. my rivals in the process). I was hoping this week would see me gain ground with Tevez, Fabs, Malouda, Nani all in my armoury.

Now everyone's got an easy out and im prob going to have to take a 4 point hit to lose Tevez.

    Infuriating.

I think we over estimate the abilities of most people who play this. Fabregas will be popular, but alot of people really aren't savvy enough to look at the fixtures and that Fab gets bonus even when his scores are poor.

    Hi lads,

In the same tevez mess as alota peeps and needed some advice.

Whatsmore I have an injured Odemwingie aswell.

    Option 1)

Ditch Tevez and Malouda for Fabs and Adebeyor (4 point hit)

Or more exotic, I like a gamble, and have 25 point cushion on field.

Ditch Tevez, Barton and Odemwingie. - For Fabs, DJ Cambell, and one other £4.5 forwrd who I will bench. Eight point hit though...

    Any other suggestions welcome.

    Thanks fellas.

I think both of those are a gamble (is Adebayor definitely gonna play?), but option 1 looks better to me. Option 2, you're gonna be playing 1 up front quite often when Blackpool have a bad fixture, which isn't usually a good idea.

Carroll! VDV is built for these big games and United have been suspect at the back for weeks now, he is on all set pieces and as I said the other day, United are probably a club Van Der Vaart may have seen himself at at some point, him being a big cheese and all that, he will want to go to OT and flaunt himself, VDV over Carroll every day, if not only for reasons that he takes all set pieces

Keiran Richardson declares himself fit enough to be ripped apart by Gutierrez this weekend. If we're feeling charitable we might give him Routledge instead

just had a thought on Berba. Do you think that when he plays with Hernandez he drops deeper and allows the little pea to play on the defenders shoulder - leaving him in more goal scoring positions.

This is the reverse to when he was playing with Rooney...with Rooney playing deeper and allowing Berb to get in the box more.

His points since Rooney has been out would seem to suggest this maybe?

Maybe chamakh is the better option after all?

I think there's some truth to it yes. Berba seems to be closer to assisting goals now than actually scoring them. Nani and Chicha both missed a couple of chances from his passes this week.

He's posted some crackers, here's some of my favourites

Andy is getting fired up for Sunday already, listening to 'smack my bitch up'. I told him to turn it off, not the right time really.

one of the kids was trying to play fight with Andy. tense moment in the house, especially when they pulled his hair. no drinks in sight tho!

I asked Andy how it was going, he said he's had "a grand fine day" - he does have a sense of humour!

My favourite though is from Joey Bartons twitter
"I seriously can't believe the Missus. Just went for a piss in the sink and the dishes were still there from last night. Dirty Bitch!"

I've been toying alot and it will be possible for me to get nasri in and only take a 4 point hit('cos i have 2 free transfers).

This would involve me getting rid of Larsson, Petrov and Piquionne. I'll be left 9.1 to spend on a mid and a forward(I was thinking Albrighton and Ameobi).

Firstly do you think it's worth it and if so any suggestions on who i should get in to replace them??

BTW that would leave me with a midfield 4 of:
Van Der Vaart, Malouda, Nasri, Nani

    Cheers.

He looked very raw. He's got pace and power, his crossing was poor in the 1st half but got better in the 2nd. He's never played at anywhere near this level of football before, so he'll need time (at least a year).

Is he worth 7 million? I'll tell you in a year's time, but I can guarantee that between them, Bebe and Chico will be worth more than £14m in a year's time.

    At £9M i think Adebayor is a steal. I don't own Tevez but if i did i'd do Tevez>Adebayor without a thought.
Chamakh is gonna get edged out by Bendtner, Lil Pea isnt guaranteed a start & i think Berba isn't a bad option.

Anyone who has Elmohamady before GW 12 should take this:

You just back from the lab concocting that one eh?
Rating out of 10 for next fixture
      Jussi 6
      Cole 7
      Alex 5 (doubtful)
      Salcido 8
      Elmo 5
      Fabregas 10
      Nasri 9
      Nani 7.5
      Elmander 7.5
      Drogba 6.5
      Carroll 7

So my arbritary scoring (by which I do not mean how many points I think they will get) gives you 71 / 110. Thats how I rate your team for this GW - pretty good.
Alex would go up to 6.5 if he is in the team

Yep, all things being well of course. Totally nonsense with no real bearing but it just represents how I feel about each of those players going into the next GW

In comparison my team would rate
        Gilks 7
        Distin 8
        Simpson 6
        Bosingwa 5 (doubtful)
        Fabregas 10
        Nasri 9
        Nani 7.5
        Adam 8
        Elmander 7.5
        Drogba 6.5
        Berbatov 8
With a total of 82.5/110. That means I win. I'm great nyah nyah and it was totally unbiased and relevant. 😛

        What did you do!?

I think I know. You would have been with abit of out of the box thinking

        Jara > Cole
        &
        Tevez > Elmander.
