The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

I think he lost possession every time he got the ball in his time on the pitch. It was very much a tactical substitution.

Not sure. Bruce has been singing his praises throughout the last couple of weeks, and he was even tenuously linked with Utd and Arsenal a couple of weeks back.

Welbeck was just as bad as far as I could tell.

I think it was just tactical for that match, three times he was beaten by Enrique so he wasn't getting anything, plus Sunderland were 2-0 down so he had to go for broke with Gyan to try and get back into it. Thankfully it didn't work

Watching a football match hoping for nothing other than a clean sheet from one of the sides is one of the dullest things you can possibly do.

Still, only 20 minutes now for Jussi to hold out.

You always have to have at least 3 defenders. It means that when you have 2 playing defender from the starting line up the game will search for the next available defender in your subs even if he is in second priority before a player who plays in a different position

Which actually means that from the time that Konchesky started the match and scored points, and you are not missing any other players in the other positions (midfield and attack) even if Odem starts his match, his points will not count in the starting 11 line up

Have to say Torres movement and positioning was very good, but as soon as the ball went near to his feet his touch was absolutely terrible. Could have set up a couple of opportunities and shanked that early chance meaning he could barely stab at it.

So frustrating to watch as someone still in ownership. One good touch amongst a whole pile of dirt saves face for me a little bit.

He's never going to get injured again while the rest of my team does and he's just going to stay and stay and stay in my team.

      Hi Taz
      1) My advice was to get Tim Howard
      2) No offence but I couldn't give less of a f*ck

      🙂

Lost my faith in him. Had him for a couple of gameweeks or more but this weeks transferred him out for Coleman, so no complaints there. The only question is how many minutes will Coleman get from now on and if he will be a regular starter at least until other players return

Definitely going to give MOTD a miss tonight, what a rubbish day of football.

Villa/Blues = Absolute tosh as per, two most negative teams in the league
Newcastle/Sunderland = Lost money on it
Bolton/Liverpool = Lost late cleanie and lost money on it

Villa vs. Brum is the worst derby in Britain, and possibly the world.

You don't get any other scoreline other than 1-0 or 0-0. They're all getting excited for the cup game aswel, I wouldn't bother, at least us and Wolves produce goals in our games.

I only listened to it. Who else rotates well with Foster? Bolton can't keep a cleanie to save their lives.

Is Coleman now looking more of a rotation risk?
I am looking for a £4.7m defender - any suggestions?

Why would he be a rotation risk all of a sudden when they still have injuries?

Arteta is back, Pienaar is back, Yak/Saha are both fit. Cahill is fit again. Rodwell is nearing a return.
Only Fellaini and Osman are out. And I thought Fellaini was due to be back in a couple of weeks.
