The first Tyne-Wear derby for a couple of years proved to be one Steve Bruce will want to forget in a hurry as Kevin Nolan, subject of our Watchlist article early last week, bagged a hat-trick as Newcastle ran out 5-1 winners to record their best Premier League win over North East rivals Sunderland.

Despite conceding only 7 league goals in their opening 9 games and coming into the game on a seven-match unbeaten run, Sunderland were overwhelmed by wave after wave of Magpies attacks and were simply blown away.

With a 4-4-2 formation working favourably for Newcastle in last weekend’s win at West Ham, Chris Hughton chose to keep with a winning system, meaning Shola Ameobi retained his place up front alongside Andy Carroll. Ameobi repaid Hughton’s faith in him with Newcastle’s other two goals in the rout though Carroll, with two assists, played a huge part with a performance that terrorised Sunderland’s back four throughout.

Bruce, a born Geordie, added fuel to the fire of today’s game by admitting he‘d rejected the chance to be Newcastle boss before:

I turned it down because it was not right. There was compensation and it wasn’t right. I turned it down twice.

Rather than celebrate the historic win of his childhood club, Bruce will now, instead, be trying to pick up the morale of their near neighbours after a display that also saw Titus Bramble sent off with Sunderland already 3-0 down.

In contrast, Kevin Nolan, now up to third highest-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), was overjoyed with a result that saw Newcastle leap to seventh in the table, saying:

Obviously it’s fantastic. We knew it would be tough – and I think it was. I think we got lucky with a couple of the goals. We’re delighted, we’ve worked so hard this week and it’s paid off today. I made my debut against these (Sunderland) and to score a hat-trick will live with me forever. It’s unbelievable. I’m delighted for the fans.

Newcastle’s recent St James’ Park form has been something of a source of frustration for the Geordie faithful but, with their first home win since August, they couldn’t have picked a better game to reinforce their credentials in front of an overjoyed Toon Army.

I was lucky enough to stick with Konchesky in my side, but definitely going to be getting rid of Shawcross, who has only scored above 2 ONCE this season! Need a defender under 4.8, Coleman's probably front runner at the moment.

"It will be a disaster if the new financial fair play rules are not enforced, because then all those crazy guys like Hicks and Gillett and the Glazers will be right"
"A club like United is in the hands of owners who have not the slightest ideas about football. I hope the situation has changed with the banks and that they don't lend like before. That might stop those owners who say 'we'll buy this club and make a quick profit'. That was the idea of Glazer and Hicks, not to build super-clubs. Manchester United were already a super-club.
If you asked me 10 years ago if there was anyone who could be a role model for Bayern, I'd have said United. Now that club has between £700 and £800m of debt and it's a nightmare"

Bayern President Uli Hoeness in the Sunday Times.

Smart man, the Bayern system is the future for healthy football clubs.

Liverpool can't really take any credit for that though. It almost seems unfair that Liverpool now have no debt through being bought, whilst a team like Arsenal have worked hard on and off the pitch to gradually reduce their debt. Lets see how Liverpool's new owners get on.

One thing I would disagree on is that (although they do have an absurd amount of debt secured against the club) you cannot deny that the Glazer's have been extremely successful in ensuring manchester united's mass commercial appeal- particularly in Asia...

As a result I still maintaint that if it does go all t*ts up with the debt, there will always be a rich buyer there because there is still so much money to be made out of the club...

They didn't- the club is still massively profitiable- bar the debt. In fact, the debt is supposedly manageable, as it is less than twice our yearly income, which is servicable (according to the crazy eyed economics guy on the beeb)...

It's only if they secure the PIK's against the club that things start to turn to the colour of shit...

But I don't understand why you can use this as an argument. You can't say something is profitable excluding a major expense and expect it to mean something.
Also, it really doesn't look like the debt is that manageable judging by the losses recorded by United recently.

Most of that loss was down to one off interest payments...

Furthermore, the debt is not the club's. It is the Glazer family's who racked it up whilst buying the club. Therefore, if ownership changed hands and another buyer came in, the debt (or most of it) would leave along with the previous owners. The fact is the underlying business model is sound, and it is not due to rash spending or poor wage structure that United havebeen attached to this debt...

True, the debt is not the club's which is a huge relief. Unfortunately, the profits of the club are going towards the interest (not even repayments of the debt). The sooner someone comes in and buys United the better, but somehow I don't think it will happen until United are in serious trouble and are available at a cheap price.
I still don't understand how the FA or whoever is in charge of these things could allow such a leveraged buyout in the first place. Ridiculous if you ask me.

i would assume that the F.A. can only do so much. A lot of the blame has to be passed to the outgoing chairmen/owners. They are the people who make the decision and they no doubt are aware at the time how the finance is being put in place by the respective buyers.

I actually would've thought the FA or another governing body would have quite alot of power when it comes to these kind of things actually. It would be interesting to find out.

+1- The FA can do sweet FA- once a club goes public (as united did) it is a matter for corporate law, nothing to with the PL. It's capitalism- see Wall Street (the original) for further details...

Just did some brief Googleing. Seems there are no laws in this country around sport franchises so you are right TommyK, Corp Law would come in. Weird considering in America there are severe restrictions over the manner in which sport franchises can be bought and managed. No wonder this country's clubs are in such trouble! I wonder how it works in other countries.

However, I'm sure the FA could still stop a takeover if they wanted regardless of Corporate Law. For example, the UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations that are coming into effect soon have nothing to do with the Law, but as its their competition, they can set the rules. So the FA could easily place restrictions on this kind of thing for the EPL right?

It is a bit of a disgrace TBH- I think that it's unlikely to change though, as there is too much money at stake... (although if I were an MP I would think hard about harnessing the votes of football supporters, many of whom would welcome a change in the current law)

Apols... I assumed she was the one you spotted the re-tweet on.

I must say I feel a little robbed. I posted that pointless Jay Kay article on here and didn't get any re-tweet-style love.

Blame andy25wsm.. He is the one who actually sent a message to this Sheridan Smith customer with your link in it, and she then retweeted it herself.

                    'Tis harsh though.

Facebook - where you lie to your friends.

Could've easily been 2-1 to them, he created a great chance for Jason Roberts but he put a simple chance wide.

Mary is harmless, although the weekly 5 minute standing ovation she gets is slightly tedious. Can't stand Cher or Katie...

Matt should win, and he probably will.

Yeah, Chamakh that's incredibly annoying, Simon wants her so fcking bad it's not right.

Cheryl barely even knows what she's talking about, during auditions she just echoed what Simon said.

Nicole Sherzinger was a much better judge.

I might be wrong here but i think Nicole Sherzinger and Katy Perry are doing the judging for the new X Factor America.

I thought Katy Perry was a disaster of a judge.

I usually just watch the auditions, most of them are gas.

I like Paije , if that's his name.

Belle Amie and Katie in the bottom 2. Judges vote was 2-2. Belle Amie got the lowest vote so they are gone. Wagner got booed big time when they said hes safe.

Why take Coleman out? No reason unless he end up on the bench.

If you meant taking Elmo out, you shouldn't do that either.

                  Not worth it at all.

You're taking a hit to swap two home defenders out for two away defenders. Liverpool could score next week. Brum can hold anyone at home. Blackpool usually score. Bosingwa mightn't even play.
