Having only scored two league goals prior to this season, Alex Song was virtually the last player in the Arsenal team expected to find the net with anything approaching regularity this time round. However, the Gunners man has surpassed all expectations with three goals in the nine games he’s played in already, which is, somewhat bizarrely, the same amount as Arsenal’s current main centre forward, Marouanne Chamakh.

After grabbing the 88th minute winner against a resilient West Ham side buoyed by the performance of Rob Green, Song found himself the subject of much praise by Arsene Wenger, who went on to say:

“He is amazing because he came as a centre-back, becomes a defensive midfielder and now he plays like a striker….He has added something to his game. When you sum up his game today he had three good chances: the goal he scored, the one on his right boot and the header in the first half that touched the bar. When you get two or three chances in the game as a defensive midfielder that means you have good timing. He has got the taste to go forward, even if I think a little too much sometimes for a holding midfielder! But that is part of our game as well.”

These passing chalkboards, comparing Saturday’s game with last season’s home match with West Ham, show an attacking side to Song’s game that he has previously failed to utilise.

Defensively, in last season’s match (left), 54% of all Song’s passes were made in his own half, whereas just 38% were made in his own half last weekend (right). Going forward, Song made only 6% of his passes in the Hammer’s final third last term, but made a fantastic 23% this time round.

Wenger went on to claim Song’s application in training has played a major part in the turnaround, saying:

He is now a good trainer but this was not always the case. Song has improved his engine and his mobility. He doesn’t need a breather now when he goes and comes back. That has added something to his quality. Now, since he has more stamina capacity, when we win the ball, he is on the move straight away and, when his timing is good, he arrives at the right moment in the box.

These heatmap comparisons from the same two games, showing the ground Song covered last season (left) and this season (right) illustrates his manager’s point perfectly. Last season the vast majority of areas he covered were in his own half, whereas this term, it’s exactly the opposite.

Another example of Song’s increased attacking role is the number of goal attempts he’s had. Through the entirety of last season, Song managed just 10 shots at goal but already he’s had 9 shots at goal with the campaign only just over a quarter done.

In terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Song’s classification as a defender last season saw him a worthwhile proposition, but with him coming in as a midfielder this time round, most people have been clearly deterred. However, with this more attack-minded role, Song’s performances are definitely food for thought. Added to the goals is the fact that he’s still racking up the Bonus Points -he has seven so far already, only three less than Nani- and at just Β£5.5m and owned by just 2.8% of managers, Song is showing a consistency that suggests this more attacking approach could be a fruitful one.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Interesting stuff - his price does appeal, but I really believe his 3 in the last 3 is an abberation. However downgrading Nasri to Song frees up a nice couple of mill to get Tevez or perhaps even a potentially reformed Rooney in for Berbasloth. One to keep an eye on

What do you think of these moves?

      Malouda > Nani

      O’Shea > Vidic

      Would leave me with

      Carson – Mignolet

      Coleman – Simpson – Vidic – Foley – Elmohamady

Nani – Van der vaart – Fabregas – Dempsey – Barton

      Drogba – Chamakh – Odemwingie

4 point hit of course but would have enough money in the bank to do Chamakh > Tevez when he is back healthy.

Zizou, I'm with you. If I already had Nani, my second choice would be to make the move for Arteta. I am getting fed up with Malouda as well and with him on the bench today, I am looking for an excuse to get rid of him. I know he will eventually come good again, so its tough to tell. I think that a Malouda > Arteta move at the present moment is a positive move.

malouda was very likely to miss this spartak moscow game anyway. he'd played 2 internationals in a week then every game since. a broken finger nail would have been enough for ancelotti to pull him out of tommorow's game. i would never act on this injury yet as it's likely to be very minor

ok, thanks. Might just go for him then. I will have to do Ferguson to Nani, so it will be for a hit.

Those heat maps mean nothing emile heskey spends loads of time in his opponents box but he doesnt score all the time! I mean theyre a nice insight into something you may previously have not noticed but other than that.....

I suppose what im getting at is this: id put more emphasis on a players fixtures, on their opponents current form, on rotation risk, injury/fitness, on whether a fixture is home/away e.t.c than i would on those heat maps then you get people who are literally looking at those heat maps and putting players in their team based solely on them haha! I mean for the same price as song you could have Charlie adam (taking every set piece for blackpool and the general go to man in their team) or perhaps nzogbia (takes some set pieces and is a bonus darling) Both of which are far better choices than song but like i said you will get people looking at those charts and putting the player under analysis straight in. If you are going to use those maps in your decision making process then charlie adam and nzogbia spend more time than song in their opponents half and have the added bonus of the aforementioned team duties.

True, but the players around Song likely to support him are far better than N'zog and Adam. If anyone has a brain they won't be putting Song in based on just a few goals and a heatmap showing he's playing further up. If his form continues I might consider it though. I never considered Diaby when he had that run of form last season because I knew it would run out.. Song might be different, interesting to see what happens =]

Wouldn't buy defenders if you don't really have to. Like injuries or suspensions. Would make sense to save a transfer this week cause of all the matches now.

Salcido's a good option for the rest of the season, play style of ashley cole, plays for a reasonably decent team. He's one of my priority's to get in.

Fixtures get a bit hard soon though..

I am in a serious trough these last 4 weeks. 26k to 126k.

Am thinking of bringing in Hernandez for Campbell this week. Can anyone see a better potential transfer for me this week?

Nope, good transfer. I see your struggling with a budget defence like me, are you sticking with it?

Cheers. Didn't want to take a hit so that is probably what I will do.

Probably sticking for the time being. I am putting it down to very bad luck at the moment. Getting -3 for Jara, playing Krul ahead of Foster & such like. Not to mention my last 4 captain choices of Torres, Rooney, Drogba & Fabregas letting me down!

        Caroll or Odenwinge long term.

If it's any comfort, I've had a similar fall - 14k t0 107k - from grace with, rather frustratingly, what I think is a good team. Hold hard, the tide will turn.

Thanks. I did have Carroll & it increasingly looks like I may have to get him again at some soon.
