All the talk this morning surrounds the performance of Gareth Bale once more. The Welshman dismantled the Inter defence for the second time in a fortnight as Spurs ran out 3-1 winners at the Lane last night. Bale terrorised Inter’s Maicon throughout, providing two lung-busting runs and pinpoint crosses to set up decisive goals for Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Bale’s Fantasy owners will again be wondering when their man is going to translate his Champions League form to the domestic stage; one assist and just 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in his last 8 league starts simply does not reflect the kind of player we’ve seen against Inter over the two legs.

Harry Redknapp was, not surprisingly, gushing again following last night’s showing against Maicon; a player who was voted the Champions League’s best defender last season…

“Gareth’s done it again and in both games, no disrespect to the right-back, he’s given him the most torrid time you could wish to see…It was just amazing to see him do that to such a top player.”

Ironically Bale has suffered a large number of sales in the FPL as a result of the emergence of team-mate Rafael Van der Vaart. Bales’s price has duly dropped from 7.1 down to the current value of 6.8. A run of decent opponents to come (bol SUN BLA) could yet provide the platform for improved returns, although his Fantasy owners will have course be relying on Bale being played in three consecutive league matches in the space of seven days.

That threat of rotation is a major concern for all Fantasy Managers when assessing their squads over the next week. Certainly owners of Van der Vaart will be worried. The Dutchman appeared to suffer a recurrence of the hamstring injury sustained at Old Trafford in last night’s game. He was replaced at half-time, having given Spurs the lead from a Luka Modric assist.

Looking at Redknapp’s lineup, we have to assess who, if anyone, will be given another three starts in the next ten days. The trip to Bolton could see some light rotation with further changes in the starting XI for the home clash with Sunderland. The likes of Jermaine Jenas and Wilson Palacios will surely be used as midfield options, while Niko Kranjcar could possibly be utilised to hand Bale a rest in one of the next three. Equally, Pavlyuchenko, Robbie Keane and Crouch will surely be rotated up front, with the Russian perhaps favourite to start at Bolton this weekend after his goal from the bench last night.

The Spurs defence could attract some Fantasy interest in the next week, with cheap prospect Alan Hutton present in our Watchlist rankings. Younes Kaboul is also an option here, and interestingly Harry singled his partnership with William Gallas out for praise in his post-match comments

“I thought Gallas was fantastic and young Kaboul is looking a real player. The two have come together as a pairing and they did great against top opposition.”

Again however, we have to consider whether Redknapp will use Sebastian Bassong as an option at some point in the next three league games. It seems likely.

We have to examine the Manchester United squad following their 3-0 win over Bursaspor in the same light. The injuries to Nani and Darren Fletcher of course remain the main concern. While United’s official site stated that Alex Ferguson “refrained from diagnosing the pair”, another report includes quotes from Ferguson that suggest that Nani has already been ruled out of the Wolves clash this weekend…

“Unfortunately, Nani has a groin injury and is out for Saturday… I think Darren will be out as well, so that part has been disappointing.”

As we discussed in our previous article, the loss of Nani would be a major blow to Fantasy Managers, while United would possibly face a run of games without the player that has so often picked the lock of defences so far this term. Gabriel Obertan and Bebe could now get the opportunity to translate some of the form they showed in last night’s tie, to the Premier League.

Elsewhere in the United lineup, we can expect returns for the likes of Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Paul Scholes and Javier Hernandez for the Old Trafford fixture on Saturday. We will surely see continued rotation over the next three however, with testing trips to City and Villa also to follow in the next ten days.

Given that it’s the Manchester derby a week today, it seems most likely that Ferguson will look to rest key players for that game, making his lineup against Wolves unpredictable to say the least. With the confidence flowing through Mick McCarthy’s camp after their win over City last time out, United really can’t afford to take that game lightly; it’s going to be an interesting week and a strong Fantasy bench looks set to be essential.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

But still a large sample. Other groups of FPLers will be following similar lines of argument when it comes to VDV v Bale or bringing in Nani.

Nani is a no-brainer. I can't really claim any marvellous skill in bringing him into my team because the decision was obvious.

The VDV v Bale question is a lot about form and FPLers are notorious for jumping on and off bandwagons. Given his scoring record, I would have expected a lot more teams to have switched to VDV.

I always find these figures misleading. I would say a third equals around 60% as many people sign up then lose interest, or have second teams to try things out on - so my take is one third = 60-70% of active, interested, FFers.

it's not all bad guys. None of the injuries are long term, and the players have a high ownership anyway, so the effect won't be felt as badly.

I'm sure you all have substitutes to do a job for this type of situation anyway.

I'm in the same boat, Tosey and I've got it down to Bale or Arteta. Both I suppose doubtful for the next 3, but good games this gw if they do play, and good long term.

I think Bale's the obvious choice: good price, great value, form, popularity, VDV possibly out.

Arteta: more likely to start this gw, more differential factor, not a Spurs player.

I don't understand the price fall mechanism. Bale is still owned by 42% of teams and yet net sales of 140k has reduced his price by 0.4m.

I thought that 10% of owners need to sell for the price to drop by 0.1m. At 1m owners, 140k would result in a single point drop and not the price collapse we've seen.

A player whose price is higher than their season-beginning value will fall at the negative NTI Threshold instead, if this is smaller than the "10% of managers who own him" figure.

So, if it takes 27k NTI for a player to rise 0.1, High ownership players whose value is above the one they started the season at (e.g. Bale, who started at 6.5) will lose 0.1 when their NTO hits 27k.

On top of this, even once (if) Bale drops below his starting value of 6.5, he will continue to drop at the negative NTI threshold. So once a player has risen above his starting value, he could theoretically plummet...

I think Mal and Fabs will be good for the w/e.

Groin strain is a tricky one; Nani def gone for the w/e, most likely next Wed. So it could be transfer time when looking at the fixtures anyway.

VDV is in bother. Hammys are a nightmare. If you tweak it; 2 weeks minimum. Come back to early, even if you think its right, and it goes again; bad!! Hes gone for a few weeks. If he drops a few hundred k, that would be nice!!

May try and survice the GW without a transfer (Yaya in for Nani, not the worst move in the world), and have my 2 for the quick GW. But then if Nani is selling material anyway, i may just get shot...

I agree. Nani and VDV won't make it this week. However i think fabs and malouda will.

Question is, i've got parker to replace nani if he misses 1 or 2 games so, can i survive.

This season is just turning into a joke. What is the point of carefully creating a team when there are 3 injuries a week. It just destroys the fun of the game for me if everytime you put together a decent lokoing side you have to rip it appart because of injury. There's no satisfaction in constantly having to transfer players in and out in order to get 11-12 fit men every week, as it just becomes a random lottery.

I was loving my midfield of Fab, Nani, Arteta and VDV, but now I'm going to have to screw it up and make a couple more random transfers.

For the record, my injuries going into the last 6 weeks:

    Harper
    Koncheski
    K Toure
    Givet?
    Fabregas
    Arteta
    Nani
    VDV
    Etuhu
    Thomas
    Morrison
    Drogba
    Tevez

    Fed. Up.

Seriously though, what the hell do I do with my team? Assuming Fab plays and Nani and VDV don't, I've stil got doubts over Morrison, Givet and maybe Coleman. I was really looking forward to bringing in Cech for Krull too.

            Sell Nani for Cahill?
Sell Morrison for Brunt or Adam?

Its all just so utterly random and futile if I keep overhauling every week.

Think you have to look at the direction you want your team to go in and perhaps make a transfer in that direction.

Personally I think I would be looking to do something with Morrison unless you particularly want him long term.

Cheers Qubit. The direction I want to go in involves Nain and VDV, which is why I'm so utterly pssed off!

Morrison's a 4.5 super sub who can happily be benched or come on in a pinch if I have an injury. As long as he's not injured of course. If I sell him for someone better it will leave me with 8 attackers to play every week.

So surely Morrison is there to fill that role this week. If Nani and VDV don't play he will do his job for you.

tbh, the switch to either Brunt or Adams looks quite sensible as a longer term bet. Slightly more expensive than Morrison but also liable to bring in a few points. Nolan, NZogbia, Lee are other nice alternatives for a 5-man midfield

Morrison was out injured on Monday night. Its the little players going down that are crippling me. Don't object to a 5 man midfield, but quiet happy with 3 strikers at the moment. If Morrison and Givet are OK, then I should be able to get a decent 11 out. Just fed up with it constantly ruining my plans.

Transfers are generally being done late, its just shtty luck that's the problem.

A couple of seasons ago i had ridiculous bad luck, a player would be injured and id replace them only for them to subsequently become injured.

I finished my lowest ever of 30k that year and lost my cash mini league by 5 points on the last day. But im over it. Honest.

Thing to do is not make too many rash moves and sit tight (as much as possible) for things to improve. Morrison to Brunt or Adam does seem a reasonable move.

Yep spot on! But personally if I do have players out to deal with (for example i dont think i can leave Tevez on the bench with other injury issues to tackle) then it could be an opportunity to get one over on some of my rivals by bringing in slightly leftfield players.
