A contrasting night in the Europe for our Premier League favourites. Liverpool prevail thanks to an all-action substitute appearance from Steven Gerrard but City struggle again, falling to a pair of late goals in Poland, leaving Roberto Mancini somewhat perplexed.

Back at home, there are injury updates on Dirk Kuyt and Jermain Defoe, more talk of Theo Walcott the striker and some scaremongering from Ashley Cole. Bless him.

Here’s some Friday morning scribbles…

Steven Gerrard led by example at Anfield, emerging from the bench to steer Liverpool to a second-half comeback against Napoli. The skipper helped himself to a hat-trick of goals which included a somewhat fortuitous opener, a spot-kick and a late smart finish. Nonetheless, Gerrard’s showing once again highlighted his value to the Liverpool side and blinked him on our Fantasy radars.

Gerrard has remained one of the top performers in the Premier League this season, without setting the world alight and justifying his price tag (11.4) in Fantasy terms.

Our Members can help themselves to the Midfield statistics and get a view on just how much potential Gerrard continues to offer in terms of Key Passes and Passes in the Opponents Half. His influence on games remains up there with the very best midfielders; turning that into points will need stronger form from Liverpool, a fit and firing Fernando Torres and perhaps a run of kinder opposition.

There’s the promise of all three to come. Again Members can view their season long ticker and spot that from Gameweek 12, right through to Gameweek 21, Gerrard will have a run of opponents that should give him and Liverpool the opportunity to come to prominence. Gerrard could yet be a key component of our Fantasy lineups in 2011.

Glen Johnson (7.1) returned to the Liverpool lineup last night and looked rusty at times but still showed his attacking threat with an effort on goal and the assist for Gerrard’s penalty. In Fantasy terms he has been somewhat usurped by Paul Konchesky’s price (5.1) in the same back four. His return to the starting lineup will demand a reshuffle on Roy Hodgson’s part. Jamie Carragher will now surely shift to his central defensive role leaving Hodgson to decide between Martin Skrtel and Sotirios Kyrgiakos for the final slot in the Liverpool rearguard.

David Ngog suffered a knock to his shin in last night’s game and will be a doubt for the Chelsea game on Sunday.

Man City’s well-publicised troubles continued, on the pitch this time. Roberto Martinez was left cursing his luck after two late goals saw his side slip to a 3-1 defeat to Lech Poznan in Poland.

Mancini’s lineup had more than a whiff of second-string about it suggesting that the likes of Adam Johnson, Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott could miss out in the starting XI for the trip to the Hawthorns having gained 90 minutes last night. Despite scoring his fifth goal in three starts in Poland, Emmanuel Adebayor could well find himself on the bench against the Baggies on Sunday. Mario Balotelli was an unused sub last night and would seem likely to return in a 4-5-1 as Mancini looks to end a losing streak of three matches. Carlos Tevez could also be in contention of course, according to Mancini’s comments earlier in the week.

Aleksandar Kolarov returned from injury to see action as a sub on 70 minutes last night. With stories indicating that Wayne Bridge is on his way out of City, there seems no doubt that Kolarov will have a run at the left-back role once he’s fully fit. At 5.7 in the FPL – he would offer decent potential and an effective route to City clean sheets once Mancini has steadied the ship.

Ashley Cole’s ongoing ankle problems got some oxygen in reports today. Cole spoke out about his frequent inability to train with plenty of quotes indicating that it remains a real concern for Chelsea backroom staff…

“I can train the next day if I want but the coaches here and the medical department say: ‘Just stay inside and rest. You don’t need to go out, you run enough in the games.”

With three league matches in seven days starting from Sunday’s trip to Anfield, you have to wonder when the injury will start to catch up with Cole and impact on his Fantasy owners.

Dirk Kuyt could yet return to the Liverpool lineup to face Ashley Cole and Chelsea on Sunday. The Dutchman is expected to train with the squad today and indicated that his chances depend now on Roy Hodgson’s outlook…

“It depends on how the next couple of days go. Hopefully the team training will be okay and at the end of the day it will be up to the manager.”

Jermain Defoe could make a return for Spurs as early as the home fixture with Blackburn a week on Saturday according to reports today.

Defoe’s return date seems to be cut back with each new report on his recovery from an ankle injury. The significance for Fantasy Managers concerns not only Defoe’s availability but also a potential change in system from Harry Redknapp. The Spurs boss has lined up with a lone striker, allowing Rafael Van der Vaart to play just off the frontman in support. Defoe’s return could well force a change in that system, impacting on Van der Vaart’s impressive output to this point.

Defoe has however indicated that he feels he can play the lone striker role with Van der Vaart behind him…

“It would be like for England, when Wayne Rooney plays just behind me”

Theo Walcott could well end up playing a striker’s role before the season is up. All the talk from Arsene Wenger surrounding Walcott’s impressive goal tally this season has him stating that the flyer is well capable of making the transition to a forward. The player himself has added further fuel to that…

“I will play anywhere for the Arsenal, but it is nice to know the manager has got different hopes for me playing up front because for me personally I am a striker”

Despite his form, Walcott faces a battle to earn a start against Newcastle this weekend and he may find himself on the bench to be used as an impact sub. We may see Wenger using his pace in the starting lineup away from home, which could see him get the nod at Wolves in midweek and against Everton at Goodison following that. If Walcott can maintain a run of starts his potential to Fantasy Managers looks strong – particularly at a price of 7.2.

Steve Bruce has confirmed that he will ring the changes following the dismal 5-1 thrashing at the hands of local rivals Newcastle. We can expect starts for Craig Gordon and Kieran Richardson as Bruce looks to inject some experience into his side. John Mensah is expected to replace the suspended Titus Bramble at the back and, perhaps most significantly, Bruce has indicated that Asamoah Gyan will start. That will see a shift to 4-4-2 with the concern that this will leave Elmohamady out in the cold. It seems more likely that Danny Welbeck will drop to the bench to offer an alternative replacement for the front two – Elmohamady should start on the right of midfield then.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I guess its different supporting a team from another country, though you can see all the games (for free you swines!) in some ways you must feel somewhat removed from it all – I cant imagine supporting an aussie footy team for example!

If it softens the blow, he'll be going down in price rather soon. You know, when he doesn't start anymore. People with Coleman should enjoy it while it lasts and hope other Everton defenders don't become out of their price ranger.

I think he will start this week at Blackpool. Offers a more robust midfield in a tough game. I cannot see moyes playing Yak and Saha here. I have resisted Coleman for a while now but will monitor events at the seaside very closely tomorrow. Sounded like he was poor last week and he was anoymous v spurs. I also thought people were getting a bit over-excited about him v Liverpool.

What about Arteta in and Malouda out. Struggling with injuries and suspensions this week and I think I've already got Chelsea covered with Drogba. I had the intention of hanging on and waiting for their 2 plump home games after Liverpool away.

On the plus side, Everton seem to have a decent run of fixtures and they are hitting some form.

    Thoughts?

depends on when/what price you bought malouda at. if you're planning on bringing him back i'd say hold off as you'd be taking a major loss most likely, but w/out your team being linked i can't see your other options to get arteta in.

yes, i like malouda to arteta then since you already have drogs for chelsea coverage and you never know how fat frank's return will impact malouda- chelsea pts. will be more spread out i think. if you make that transfer your mf will be identical to mine as i'm bringing arteta back in next gw for nasri, so i like it 🙂 i have elmander instead of odemwingie and got rid of konchesky a couple of weeks back, so you might want to use some of that extra cash to upgrade one of your defenders. i think a chelsea defender (alex, terry, cole) is a must have.

what do you think of my cup tie? major differences is that he has berba, but not drogs and no vdv, but has brunt. as vdv might not be a factor this week i'm a bit worried as i think berba is due for a goal and brunt is at home. he's currently 4 pts. higher than me overall because i took a stupid hit for nasri last week.

Mark, totally agree on your frustration around having top scoring players from an early price. It does seem that you then get punished for the early foresight once they hit bad fixtures/niggly injuries. Malouda is a prime example. You cannot just swap him out for a few weeks like someone who acquired him more recently. You know you will want him back soon and that move will end up costing you money that would have potentially made someone else money (i.e. Buy him back cheaper assuming he now drops). I currently feel trapped with drog, him and nani. I know that is just part of the game but it is frustrating!

Would a 75% profit for GW1 players that have stayed in your team be an improvement? For example Malouda 9.5, he's 10.4 now so your selling price is 10.1 instead of 9.9

      I agree with Granville.

You had the benefit of his early monster points haul though. People like me who got him in week 4 or later really missed the boat on him and paid more money for less production.

I'd rather be in Mark's position and have had Malouda's 15 pt hauls in the points bank and take the financial loss than have spent over £10m on him and got little pointage in return.

People on here worry far too much about how much £0.1's they're going to lose on a player like its some badge of dishonor to lose money on an underperforming but expensive player. I just care about whether the player is going to get me decent points or if there's someone cheaper who'll score more.

And I've been guilty of that this season. Mainly because none of my mates don't know (or more importantly, not bothered) about the price changes system, how it works or when the rises happen. I've taken advantage of that and have a higher squad value, yet I'm 15 points behind 1st place...

It's why I raised the point in the previous article.

I know value is an important part of the game, but maybe we look upon it a bit too much.

the rules say: You can play 2 transfer wildcards a season. One wildcard can be played at anytime, the other can only be used between Gameweeks 23 and 27. This extra wildcard will be available after the start of Gameweek 22 (4 Jan 19:30) up to the Gameweek 27 deadline (12 Feb 11:30). All transfers made in the Gameweek your wildcard is played will be without points deduction. You play your wild card when confirming transfers

Same thing. GW27 equals forced wildcard. You would be silly not to make at least 3 trades that week even if it only saves you 4 points.

Whether it kicks in automatically or not, there's no point paying for transfers in GW27. And if you haven't used it you might as well - use it or lose it.

Only reason you might not is if you want to roll over and have 2 frees in gw28 for some reason.

Yeah I see the thinking but case may be that you're happy with your team, in which case making transfers for the sake of it would be just daft. I'll probably be using mine but it's not forced. I've seen plenty posts saying "oh balls I wish I hadn't played my wildcard it was rubbish and I hate my team now" - or words to that effect

And you ALSO benefit more from the rise in value. Granville's right. If you had Malouda from the start you make a big profit on the sale, you've had the points and you've also had spare funds invested elsewhere. It's fair.

I think if there was special treatment given to your gw1 selections it would just give us another factor to consider and skew our selections further (ie if Chelsea were at Old Trafford gw1 would you still pick a healthy Chelsea and Utd contingent so you get the longterm added growth, or do you pick players with easier fixtures?)

    hey guys,

this the injury struck team im left with. Havent made any changes yet, not sure im gonna bother.

    Foster,
    Coleman, O’Shea, Toure,
Faye, Malouda, Fabregas(Captain), Van der Vaart, Yaya Toure, Varney, Drogba

    With the following substitutes:

    Krul, Carroll, Konchesky, Nani

Any obvious changes u’d make? i was thinking arteta in for malouda?

Hey Raf...rather stick Nani in for Malouda...has more chance of playing...Just a thought...Line up your subs in the order you intend to "start" them so your auto sub does it should your players not all feature as you anticipate they won't. Last thing you need is for Nani to start and score or something...

I’m playing Nani so relying on auto-sub. 2 sub spots taken up by Malouda and Jara.

So out of the following who to bench?
    Varney, Alcarez, Coleman

I'm playing Nani, but I fully doubt that he'll play any part in proceedings this weekend.

I think Sir Alex will rest him anyway and look to have him fit for the Man City game. Which sucks in fantasy terms but is absolutely the right thing to do if you are the Man Utd manager.

Whatever Sir Alex does though, the guys a genius and a legend so I'm not going to moan about what decision he ends up making about Nani this weekend.

As it's unlikely to get more specific news today, I have to make up my mind what to do this GW. Maybe you could add some further arguments? I can only afford two on my bench as I have Jara.

1.Fabregas:chance of playing 60% -> def keep him
2.Malouda: chance of playing 0% -> nice fixtures in GW 12/13, but already have Drogba
3.Nani:chance of playing 20% -> tough fixtures in GW 12/13, but don't have and don't want to have another ManU player
4.VdV: chance of playing 40% -> nice fixtures in GW 12/13, but is injury prone. could be out for a longer time as well.

I hope to get some further Fabs + VdV news. Atm I tend to take out the Spurs midfielder, but really don't know why?

I'd play both. N'Zog can turn it on at any time home or away. City will be looking to turn things around after 3 defeats in a row and may have their talismanic striker Tevez back.

Albion also missing Jara. I think City know they need to win this one especially with the local derby next week. Don't see Brunt doing much this weekend.

Because I've owned both players for a while and won't be able to afford to get either back anytime soon.

The team that I can put out isn't too bad for this week and I think I can afford to keep them on the bench for at least one week. Just looking at ways of improving my current (fit) first 11.

Alright fella, not seen u on here much recently. Anyway yeah he always puts in a good shift and with these niggles he seems to have it's inevitable and I'm just thinking with 3 games in a week, Lamps back and Zhirkov in good form, he could easily cover him in one of those games.

Yeah, been working, and they block this site (probably for the best to be fair...) - Just caught on about the midweek games, yeah s'pose he could be rested. Lamps coming back is an interesting one though... definitely keeping an eye on that chap

Now changing my mind and considering getting rid of Malouda. Who would you go for?

    a) VDV - fitness risk
    b) Nasri - already got Fabs
    c) Arteta - already got Pienaar and Coleman
    d) Cahill - see above
    e) Bale

Need to get rid of Hahnemann. Any opinions on who's the cheapest alternative to work with Foster? At the mo, mignolet looks ok but doesn't rorate very well.

Also Craig Gordon is back on the bench now, so Mignolet's days could be numbered in the first team. West Ham and Newcastle rotate pretty well.

After the next gameweek I'd ditch Foster over Hahnemann.

Foster getting the boot shortly. Rotating Carson and Al Habsi.

zero clean sheets. I give up.

              carson/al-habsi - I'll take a look

Hahnemann hasn’t had a great start admittedly. If you have held on this long you may as well keep, look at his fixtures. I think he rotates reasonably with Carson/Al Habsi too. I’m just thinking about the Carson/Al Habsi switch to get a bit more in the coffers. Waiting for Foster to rise .1 more before selling – Hopefully soon.

No I'm definitely keeping Foster. Comes down to Krul or Al-habsi for me now, and strong arguments can be made against both of them, but I want as cheap as possible.

I'd go Al Habsi. Harper could possibly be back December/January time.

Just to clarify, I meant that Newcastle and West Ham rotate well with Birmingham - not with each other.

Zigic could give West Ham a tricky time if he plays
