Given that West Ham currently sit rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, it may seem an act of folly to cast an eye over their players, but a run of games for the Hammers that reads (WBA, BLP, liv, WIG, sun, MCY) means they are at least worth considering.

With Avram Grant’s side managing just one clean sheet since the start of the season, it’s perhaps wise to steer clear of defensive options, so, instead, we take a look at their front three: Frédéric Piquionne, Carlton Cole and Victor Obinna.

Piquionne
The ex-Pompey man comes into this Gameweek’s showdown with West Brom on the back of a goal and 3 Bonus Points in the Hammers 2-2 draw away to Birmingham. His form at Upton Park is not too shabby either, scoring 2 goals in 5 games, despite the fact he’s only finished the 90 mins twice.

As this heat map from the Birmingham game shows, he’s mainly stationed out on the right of the front three, though Obinna’s movement and Cole’s hold-up play allows him to drift inside, where his shooting has been the most impressive of all the West Ham forwards thus far; despite having three shots against Alex McLeish’s men (half of both Obinna and Cole’s totals) he was the only one to find the net. The fact he has also been taking direct free-kicks only adds to his threat.

With a total of 3 goals, 1 assist and 7 Bonus Points, Piquionne is the top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for the Hammers so far this season, with 40 points to his name. Coming in at £5.1m and owned by just 1.6% of managers, he could well be worth a gamble, with those next three home games all being definitely winnable.

Obinna
His strength and direct running adds an extra dimension to West Ham’s play, and it’s notable that of the eight league games he’s played in since making his debut in September, the Hammers have only failed to score once, in Gameweek Ten’s narrow 1-0 defeat at Arsenal. Prior to his introduction to first-team matters, West Ham had failed to score in two of their three games, an indication of his impact.

This heat map (v Birmingham) shows just how much freedom Obinna plays with. Initially starting on the left of the three, he also marauds through the centre and on the right, as well as finding his way around and inside the penalty box to pose plenty threat, illustrated by his six shots at goal against Birmingham. His corner kick duties also add to Obinna’s appeal.

He may not have found the net in the league so far, but it’s not for a want of trying: Obinna has 28 goal attempts, the fifth highest total in the league, despite missing those first three games of the season. Instead, his returns include two assists and 3 Bonus Points in FPL, which accounts somewhat for his low ownership (0.2%) as his price remains at £5.5m.

Cole
His early-season form has saw the centre-forward’s price plummet from £6.5m to £5.8m (with ownership now at 1.4%) in just 11 Gameweeks, but there are signs that Carlton Cole is slowly starting to regain some form. After a few subs appearances, he has started two of the Hammers’ last three games and in those matches, he picked up an assist (against Birmingham) and a goal, at home to Newcastle in his side’s 2-1 loss.

As this heat map from the Birmingham game shows, Cole is the more central of the three, working the opponent’s back line and holding the ball up, looking to exploit space for the two wider players to run into. His weekend performance had Hammers favourite Tony Cottee delighted as Cole had six shots, managing four on target, the most of any player on show that day.

Having scored 10 league goals in each of the last two seasons, Cole is lagging behind with just that one goal to his name so far, and it’s imperative he finds the route to goal over the next few Gameweeks if the Hammers are to climb the table. He may well be on penalties should the chance of a spot-kick arise.

Although West Ham are hardly prolific, their brace at St Andrews last weekend was the first time they’ve bagged more than one goal in a league game, and could be an indicator of their shooting finally improving.

It’s not like they’re struggling to get shots in at goal; with 120 Goal Attempts, the Hammers have the sixth highest number of shots at goal this term and bearing in mind they have scored in every home game so far this season, it’s more than likely they will be adding to their “Goals For” column over these next few gameweeks.

My team as it stands guys (after a 4 point hit):

    Foster (Jaask)
    Cole, Coleman, Simpson (Samba, Dann)
    Malouda, Fabregas, Albrighton, N’Zogbia (Nani)
    Drogba(c), Davies, Carroll

How does that look? Is it worth starting Nani in case he makes an appearance? Would be at the expense of Albrighton who has a tasty fixture. Cheers guys

hey peeps this is out of frustration as i am at a loss to know what to do! I want to buy a Chelsea defender but only have 7.1 in the bank......hence the plan was to get Alex who seemed the safest bet and now he is injured so can anyone tell me who out of Ivanovic and Bosingwa will start both the matches??? thanks in advance for the help given!

what a difference a goal and a scout article makes. this same question got a split decision last week, maybe even more in favour of Arteta. now it's unanimous for Cahill. we all knew Cahill was playing off the striker before Saturday and that he'd got 4 goals didn't we?

What a great ploy by Drogba, fake Malaria so no-one wants to mark him (new take on his losing his marker by rolling around on the floor holding his shin). Kind of reminds me of Sunday league football where half the players reek so much of alcohol that you don't want to get near them in fear of them vommiting.

Guys I need a sub midfielder he has to rotate with N’zogbia and Carroll, to me the best choice is Barton but obviously doesn’t rotate well with Carroll. Not sure if I want to waste 4.7m on my bench other options are:-

    A) Barton
    B) Albrington
    C) Ferguson
    D) Delap
    E) Boa Morte (short term)

Can i get some opinions on my situation please? Ive got drogba as my only chelsea representarive but i want to swap a.cole in for k.toure. I view having cole as a way of effectively having a defender and midfielder from chelsea in my team but without the extra expense of having a chelsea defender plus e.g. Malouda. This is the problem i have with this: once lamps is back i will want him definitely. Is it far too much money spent on one teams players to have a.cole, lamps and drogba? I fear it is so should i just get a cheaper chelsea defender for when i inevitably get lamps?

I would be allowing lamps to find his feet before moving him in hence my thinking abour a.cole kind of covering me for defence and midfield for the time being, everybody whose ever played this knows lamps doesnt have bad seasons he may have slightly 'purple' patches but he always comes good so i really do view him as a must have once fit. Ahhh this is so annoying! Sod it i think im just going to put in cole for now and hope a lampard injury makes my decision the right one.

Stave off Lamps until he's back in the swing of things - a lot of points he usually gets might go to the (awesome) essien and malouda(especially at home). A. cole is a starter every game for chelsea and it is ludicrous to get rid of him - same applies to drogba.

Sod it, I really dont fancy Drogba for captain for some reason so am going Fabs.

He could still destroy Wolves at 70% and it only takes a penalty or free kick.

Will probably regret it, but I don't really see the point in having him if I won't captain him against Wolves.

Will be a great differential too and you won't get that with Fabs too often.

Quick question about price rises, I think I have this right:

Tevez rose last night, so his NTI threshold needed to rise again was doubled. At the mo, he's at 56% towards a rise (all today). At 7.30 when the deadline passes tonight, his NTI threshold should be reset, thus turning that 56% into a 112%, and he will rise tonight at 1am. Yes?

Also bear in mind that at his current rate, he may well hit 100% by tonight even without his NTI threshold being halfed at 7.30.

Malaria is actually pretty damn serious but there are various strains...Drogba obviously didn't get the very serious one people have died from having it as it can cause swelling on the brain and well...death...My ex had it when we went to a game park and well she ended up in hospital for days on a drip and all that...not really a joke around these parts hey..although not too common down south...

      lol

having lived in Kenya for a while I've experienced it [and seen people suffer from it] it's the number one killer esp in kids. so it's basically dangerous. If discovered early then it's not as much of a threat as it can be easily dealt with. Some people basically develop some kind of resistance towards it esp the ones who are in Malaria prone areas. Therefore I'd expect someone in Europe where it might not be as common to suffer more from it

Sorry all, but my first season and I wondered if I'm playing 3 at the back starting Alex and he doesn't play, does my auto sub still go to first choice - a midfielder (Nasri)- despite it meaning I will only actually play 2 defenders at the back? Or does it go to the next defender on my bench instead of Nasri (so Mummy)?
