Given that West Ham currently sit rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, it may seem an act of folly to cast an eye over their players, but a run of games for the Hammers that reads (WBA, BLP, liv, WIG, sun, MCY) means they are at least worth considering.

With Avram Grant’s side managing just one clean sheet since the start of the season, it’s perhaps wise to steer clear of defensive options, so, instead, we take a look at their front three: Frédéric Piquionne, Carlton Cole and Victor Obinna.

Piquionne
The ex-Pompey man comes into this Gameweek’s showdown with West Brom on the back of a goal and 3 Bonus Points in the Hammers 2-2 draw away to Birmingham. His form at Upton Park is not too shabby either, scoring 2 goals in 5 games, despite the fact he’s only finished the 90 mins twice.

As this heat map from the Birmingham game shows, he’s mainly stationed out on the right of the front three, though Obinna’s movement and Cole’s hold-up play allows him to drift inside, where his shooting has been the most impressive of all the West Ham forwards thus far; despite having three shots against Alex McLeish’s men (half of both Obinna and Cole’s totals) he was the only one to find the net. The fact he has also been taking direct free-kicks only adds to his threat.

With a total of 3 goals, 1 assist and 7 Bonus Points, Piquionne is the top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for the Hammers so far this season, with 40 points to his name. Coming in at £5.1m and owned by just 1.6% of managers, he could well be worth a gamble, with those next three home games all being definitely winnable.

Obinna
His strength and direct running adds an extra dimension to West Ham’s play, and it’s notable that of the eight league games he’s played in since making his debut in September, the Hammers have only failed to score once, in Gameweek Ten’s narrow 1-0 defeat at Arsenal. Prior to his introduction to first-team matters, West Ham had failed to score in two of their three games, an indication of his impact.

This heat map (v Birmingham) shows just how much freedom Obinna plays with. Initially starting on the left of the three, he also marauds through the centre and on the right, as well as finding his way around and inside the penalty box to pose plenty threat, illustrated by his six shots at goal against Birmingham. His corner kick duties also add to Obinna’s appeal.

He may not have found the net in the league so far, but it’s not for a want of trying: Obinna has 28 goal attempts, the fifth highest total in the league, despite missing those first three games of the season. Instead, his returns include two assists and 3 Bonus Points in FPL, which accounts somewhat for his low ownership (0.2%) as his price remains at £5.5m.

Cole
His early-season form has saw the centre-forward’s price plummet from £6.5m to £5.8m (with ownership now at 1.4%) in just 11 Gameweeks, but there are signs that Carlton Cole is slowly starting to regain some form. After a few subs appearances, he has started two of the Hammers’ last three games and in those matches, he picked up an assist (against Birmingham) and a goal, at home to Newcastle in his side’s 2-1 loss.

As this heat map from the Birmingham game shows, Cole is the more central of the three, working the opponent’s back line and holding the ball up, looking to exploit space for the two wider players to run into. His weekend performance had Hammers favourite Tony Cottee delighted as Cole had six shots, managing four on target, the most of any player on show that day.

Having scored 10 league goals in each of the last two seasons, Cole is lagging behind with just that one goal to his name so far, and it’s imperative he finds the route to goal over the next few Gameweeks if the Hammers are to climb the table. He may well be on penalties should the chance of a spot-kick arise.

Although West Ham are hardly prolific, their brace at St Andrews last weekend was the first time they’ve bagged more than one goal in a league game, and could be an indicator of their shooting finally improving.

It’s not like they’re struggling to get shots in at goal; with 120 Goal Attempts, the Hammers have the sixth highest number of shots at goal this term and bearing in mind they have scored in every home game so far this season, it’s more than likely they will be adding to their “Goals For” column over these next few gameweeks.

Who will take pens for Hammers in Noble's absence? Carlton missed his last so I am hoping Piquonne gets the nod.

Okay, first week in a while I've been really unsure about my transfers.

Got Alex, Nani, VDV, Jara and Berbatov. Got 2 free transfers.

    1) VDV and Berbatov ---> N'Zogbia (or temporarily Nolan) and Tevez

    2) Malouda and Berbatov ----> Cahill (or Arteta) and Tevez

    3) Jara ---> Simpson and save a transfer for next week.

Quick pole, 1, 2 or 3? (Or even be imaginative!)

I really like option #1 for this game week. if city are going to beat united, it's probably going to be through tevez scoring or assisting. N'zog is just unstoppable at times, just hope his next match is one of those times. wigan only win when rodellega scores, so if you are thinking 1-0 then get ashley young or nolan in instead.

    Krul/(Foster)
    Elmo/Jagielka/Simpson/(O'Shea or Boateng)
    Fabregas/Alrbighton/Adam/(Nani and VDV)
    Drogba/Elmander/Hernandez

put nani in your starting line up,fergie is always full of surprises with a derby game!

but if i was you i would hold off on transfer, 2 on this weekend, could be Very handy! (as the 2 transfers could help ur team long term, as we shud kno more about nani and vdv)

also not sure i would have mummy above o shea or boatengm but thats jus me!

Newcastle is a risky call for sure, but I don't have better options to be honest, I think Brum will be beaten by Stoke tonight, and will concede at least 1.

Elmo is OOP and that is the only reason I am playing him above O'Shea and Boateng, although it is now looking like the Manchester Derby could be a 1-0 affair either way, or even god forbid 0-0, but Tevez will have some part in a goal, either scoring or assisting, I have no doubt, this is the biggest game of his season now every year.

Hmm, hhmm, very hmmm. Maybe Elmo should not be played over Boateng and/or O'Shea, thanks for help!

I have relegated Hernandez to my bench. With Nani (and others now with supposed virus) out, United will struggle to score. Hernandez is the kind of striker that will do very little without supply imo.
Maybe do Hernandez > one of Carroll, Piquionne, Odem, Tevez, Torres depending on funds

In light of what I have written above, I would consider playing Boateng also.

    Current set-up:
    Foster
    Cashley-Alex-Coleman-Simpson
    Arteta-Fabregas(c)-Brunt-Nzog
    Carroll-Drogba

    AlHabsi-Hernandez-Nasri-Mummy

Not sure which order to put subs in.
Also, not sure if I should relegate Alex to the bench due to Ancelotti's concerns. However, which his knee injury I reckon he will either play 90 mins or not play at all right? so little risk of a 1 pointer. But this means that sub order is important.

I would be playing Nasri over N'Zogbia, Arsenal are striving for a good performance now and Wolves are still Wolves no matter how much they have improved in recent weeks, that being said, Arsenal are still inconsistent Arsenal!

I would be reluctant to bench Hernandez, but I always have my United blinkers on, so don't pay too much heed to me. But, it is the biggest game of his United career to date, United need someone to step up to the plate tomorrow night, and I have a feeling for him.

If however you do have your mind made up, Hernandez/N'Zog/Mummy would be my subs order

Cheers Johnny - only benching Nasri because of the Calf injury, so scared of a 1 pointer. Also, he is the most susceptible to rotation out of my front 8.

ya, Newcastle cleanie is by no menas a dead cert, I am playing Krul and Simpson because I have to play Simpson really, and now is as good a time as any to field him; high on confidence and looking better at the back coupled with Blackburn being poor on the road.

Solid team. Would look to get Harper, Hernandez and Oshea out at some point though.
Should have good enough team for this week though, so maybe transfer out Harper so you dont waste a free transfer

I was thinking Hernandez out, Carroll in. O'Shea out, Chelsea defender in. I really want a Chelsea defender, but I'm not sure about Carroll.

Another side of me wants to get rid of Fabs to free up the funds to get in Tevez.

Carroll is worth it. I regret benching him last week. For his price you cant go wrong really.
Maybe look at a Man City defender if you cant afford a Chelsea defender (risky bringing in Alex this week). Kolarov is close to starting I think.
I am captaining Fabregas again. Third week running

I really don't want a City defender. I would consider Hart, but I don't want an expensive goalie. Hrrmmm...

I am the same re wanting a Chelsea defender, but it appears now might be a bad time to go for Alex and I am now thinking Cech represents the only "cheap" Chelsea starter

I'm looking at Ivanovic. He seems like a goal threat. It's just the whole rotation thing that's annoying.

I would bench Albrighton (1st sub) and play both. If Nani doesn't play, Albrighton comes in.

Will Nani get anytime at all, that is the question

I currently have Nani IN and Albrighton 1st sub

But maybe I'm better off playing Albi incase Nani gets like 10 mins. Or if Nanin starts then that's good......

Why not play VDV and Nani and let autosub do the work for you?
You think theyll make a 1point appearance?

You could upgrade Hernandez to Tevez/Torres[depending on how much cash you have]

cheers dude, that is the plan in 2 weeks time, Hernandez OUT Torres IN, am giving Torres another few games to prove his fitness, can handle the price rise.

I am also planning on starting Nani and VDV, and letting autosub do its thing, I should of said that was the team I thought would be my scoring 11 this week

I find the above article very interesting. It puts forward some good reasons to justify selecting any of the three forwards. I'm going to get one in for berbatov but not sure which one. Who does everyone fancy?

I personally am tempted by Obinna.. seems to be doing everything but scoring.

so seems EVERYONE is deciding between

fabregas/ drogba/ tevez (and isaw one sneak say arteta) for captain

    Fabregas.
Playing wolves seems like easy points time, but the fact is the man has had easy opposition at home the last 2 weeks and failed to get points! thats enough for me not to captain him, he is a differential and that leads me to believe that even having him in your team is enough to reap the reward shud he do something!

    Tevez.
Scored well last weekend and is central to everything city (especially with balotelli now out). However he is playing man united in a derby game, while this will make him want it more, its still a difficult fixture, united are second in the table and undefeated, even if their squad is depleted they will be fighting tooth and nail not to lose, low scoring game on the cards

    Drogba.
At home , against a reasonable team, he played poorly last week, but we now know that was due to malaria, of which he has recovered and we know he is starting. This suggests to me all is well, drogba is now 100% and therefore a safe captain choice, he hasnt scored well in a couple of games so will be looking to get back on track. If he isnt fully over the malaria, then he may well be a bad choice, but from ancelottis conference, i think he is!

    Arteta.
At home, everton are finally playing well, but he doesnt seem all that involved in everything good everton do, i think he could score the highest out of the players im discussing but even if everton win comfortably, he could still do very little, therefore making him not the safest bet.

    my decision
    drogba, any counter arguments?

Just to play devil's advocate...Fabregas and Drogba both scored poorly in the last few weeks, but it's seen as a negative for Fab but a positive for Drog?

It could be said that they were both suffering in some way but should have improved by tomorrow night.

true , looking at drogbas last 6 fixtures , which on the whole have been tough, but still included games such as home to wolves where points were available and he did nothing!
scoring a total of 17 points in his last 5 games, nothing to shout about!!

          i might reconsider then.

question is, do chelsea bounce back after losing to pool, or continue to struggle againt fulham?

Doesn't the Drogba and Anelka both varying doubts question mean that Malouda is now pretty much nailed on to start the next two games?

If I can just point his points hauls in all the mid-table-or-lower-home games so far this season:

    West Brom: 15
    Stoke: 10
    Blackpool: 14
    Wolves: 8

And for the Wolves game they were already in their damp run of form. Just saying.

Or you could go by his form and see that he's only managed over 3 once in 6 matches since September 25th.
