Having failed to domestically mirror his headline-making Champions League displays over the last couple of months, Gareth Bale has been a source of frustration for his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners. Today, however, the Spurs winger came good with an inspired performance as Harry Redknapp’s side put four past visitors Blackburn.

Bale’s two goals and an assist will surely be followed by the 3 Bonus Points, giving him a total of 18 points from today’s game, which is, incredibly, the combined tally of last eight gameweeks. Given that Rafael Van der Vaart had scored 48 FPL points in the same period prior to today’s game, this gives an indication of just how much Bale has been underachieving in the Premier League, in comparison to his team mate.

Spurs had scored just 2 goals in their last 2 league games at White Hart Lane and were booed off the park last weekend, but today, Harry Redknapp moved from 4-5-1 to his more conventional 4-4-2 formation, which will undoubtedly have influenced today’s scoring.

With Peter Crouch partnered by Roman Pavlyuchenko up top, Van der Vaart was moved from his role behind a lone striker out to the right wing, where he still managed to supply two assists in the home win. Consequently, this was the first home game he has failed to find the net since joining Spurs at the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Bale’s goals were his first since Gameweek 2 and is just reward for the 43.5% of Fantasy managers who have shown patience with him, despite the above-mentioned run of low-scoring. He now sits just 1 FPL point behind Van der Vaart, and dependant on the Dutchman’s Bonus Point allocation this evening, could overtake him by this evening.

Bale sits at £6.8m right now, though his price has been as high as £7.1m this season. This week will no doubt see further heavy investment in the Welshman, despite Spurs travelling to the Emirates next weekend for a North London derby with Arsenal. Clearly, however, Van der Vaart’s consistency is a more dependable source of points and with Redknapp changing the system from game to game, it’s still debatable as to whether Bale is the best Spurs midfielder to have in your FPL squad. His explosive skill and ability to score big, however, was illustrated in emphatic style this afternoon.

    Great wildcard then

    Carson 2
    Cole 0 Toure 6 Konchesky 1
    Nani 4 Adam 2 Brunt 2 Cesc 0
    Drogba (C) 0 Tevez 1 Carroll 2

    Bench

    Foster 7, Simpson 6, Foley 5, Ferguson 3

What a bench! Infuriating. Tried to fit in VDV but couldnt, gotta hope for something big from Cashley, Cesc and Drogba

Fedup with my team.. had 4 horrible weeks.. thinkin of using my wildcard this week.. should i? my wildcard team would be somethin like this
    Robinson AL HABSI
    A.COLE VIDIC KOLAROV SIMPSON Jara
    Fabregas VDV Nani NZOGBIA JARVIS
    Drogba Carroll DAVIES/ELMANDER

Worth it? gonna play the fixtures from now on
Manu got fantastic fixtures.. and so do city.. so vidic and kolarov could be good options.. hate my defense the past few weeks.. the way i see it is with this time i can ride out fixtures till gw 22-27 where the next wildcard comes in.. if i dont use it now i never will.. with most teams havin 4 home games in 6 now seems the best time to use it

Used mine this week (see above post) it's very hard to get a good balance, i'd say your team looks good - i wish i'd bought in VDV but couldn't squeeze him and Tevez in. I'd go for Elmander or Odemwingie

mortal swinbat I found by using my wilcard I made my team worse going for the in form players instead of thinking clever long term stuff past the five week mark of players who might hit form.
I want to start a petition to get wildcards banned from fpl is too much of a leveller for the casual players I think.
One was bad enough two wildcards is even worse the espn fantasy football is fairer only allowed 30 transfers per season, only draw back no auto sub.

Thing is i've done the opposite, i've not chosen in-form players ive chosen season-long players.

Playmaker/set peice for Man Utd (Nani) Chelsea (Drogba) Man City (Tevez) Arsenal (Cesc)

A good 3 defenders Chelsea (Cashley) Man City (Toure) and Liverpool (lol) (Konchesky)

Then a mix of good value Cheapies - Carroll, Adam, Brunt, Simpson

It just hasn't paid of this week! Hopefully overall it will be rosey for me, especially as VDV/Bale have poor fixtures coming up...

I agree that wildcards are sometimes just as bad as they are good

Happy to see Stoke win but that's more to do with my dislike of Liverpool.
Seriously hope Stoke go down - for the good of football. Fair enough they dug in and did what they had to do when they were promoted 2 years ago but 2 seasons on they're exactly how they were. Dropping proper footballers like Tuncay and Gudjohnsen - playing the like's of Delap aka 8 passes, 3 completed per match. Resistant to playing any type of player that might remotely alter their physciality I really hope they get relegated and the that the teams that WANT to play the game like Blackpool stay up.

Just having a look at what Konchesky has done for my team.

    GW 6: Played - 1 point
    GW 7: Injured
    GW 8: Played - 1 point
    GW 9: Played - 2 points
    GW10: Benched - 5 points
    GW11: Benched - 6 points
    GW12: Played - 2 points
    GW13: Played - 1 point

I'm playing him GW14, so you should bench him lads.

Yeah he's going for me this week after missing the 2 fixtures I got him in for. Not a lot in the 4.8m range though, narrowed it down to doubling up on Bolton for 4 weeks or a depressing welcome back for Shawcross

He's twice the player Konchesky is though, probably he'll get the odd assist sooner or later and in all honesty he should have had a bonus point or two by now.

I've already taken him out though... Home fixture (when I'd want to play him) are terrible up until about week 20, by which time we'll all be playing our second wildcards.

Yeah I know, he's close to the chopping block for me as well.

Shame really because I like him. There are not many better left backs in the league.

On current form, there is one.

Unless you are Harry Redknapp, and you still consider Bale to be a left back!

They should go to Birmingham defenders... Ferguson usually gets the BPs for completing a lot of (2 yard) passes. But I doubt that Birmingham had too much possession today.

Reading about the game, it sounds as though Dann and Johnson are good bets for the 3 and 2 BPs.

20 points (+ bonus from 5 players). Not too unhappy, but could be slipping down from 4th to 6th in my minileague. Damn Bale!

But most players above me have 1/2/3 players left to play, I have 6 + captain! Bring on tomorrows charge up the leaderboard.

I agree. Back in the days when I preferred to have one team to follow rather than every team I really liked Liverpool.

They will be a top team again sooner or later, but it might take a long long time
