He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

Chamakh is playing well at the moment, I can't see Wenger risking a full 90 just yet.

It's hard to say when he'll play a full game. But from a fantasy perspective we need to see him finish 90 minutes before drafting him in.

Yes, he will play every single game, never get injured, and he'll score a hat-trick in every other game. You must buy him now. If you don't, your right leg will wither and die.

Fixtures, form, likelyhood of playing every game, prices being stupidly low for the returns id expect from that player, players playing in more attacking roles than indicated on the game and last but not least ....... How popular the player in question is with the shadowy figures that are the bonus 'judges'? Insert any offensive word where i said judges and it means the same thing

I look at value , always buy someone aboout to rise in price . Also dont be too hungup about their next fixture , buy someone that you can bring in and keep in .
Its bad to buy someone on a temporary basis because when you have injuries to other players you will be stuck with them.

Doont swap like for like just because one had a better gameweek thn another. Remove your weakest link , even if its only a bench player

To anybody thinking of dropping Drogba, don't.

He's still fit, and on setpieces and penalties, you've got to keep him in imo. The high-end striking options at the moment are horrible anyways, so there's no adequate replacement.

Tevez is in a ManCity team determined to draw every game.
Torres is an injury risk and in a crap Liverpool team.
Chamakh is useless and a rotation risk.
Rooney is still coming back from injury.
    Van Persie who?
Balotelli is a red card risk and in said defensive ManCity team.
    Bent is injured.
Berbatov has forgotten how to run.

So I'll just replace him with someone cheaper like Elmander then right?

    No.

Making big money changes like replacing Drogba with a much cheaper player completely changes the dynamics of your team and before you know it, you have 3 expensive defenders when games are all finishing 3-2 in December because players can't keep their focus for 90.

Strikers and midfielders are still outscoring their defensive counterparts, so making big switches to defense-heavy teams at the expense of Drogba, which is the norm at the moment, will not pay off long-term in my opinion.

Good post and I am keeping Drogba. I think a similar argument can be made for Tevez. Yes City are defensive but he's on FK & pens, captain so shouldnt be a rotation worry and up until very recently was reliable for a goal per game.
I'd also add Gyan to your list there. Was tempted when Bent got injured but didn't have the bottle and used his fixtures excuse but I may look to bring him in soon enough.
Don't write off van Persie either. He'll steal FKs and pens off Fabregas and is possibly the best value striker at 9.5m once he gets going and strings a few games together.

It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside...

I don't see how getting someone cheaper like Elmander automatically means YOU MUST GET 3 EXPENSIVE DEFENDERS. IT IS THE LAW! If I had the Drogo, and decided to get rid of him, I could quite easily see myself using the surplus cash to make love to my midfield.

        You'll be very surprised.

6.0 sitting around is a lot of money, and you'll end up spending it one way or another. In midfield or in defense, it doesn't matter, it still means that you won't be able to get him back easily and then comes the inevitable point hits...

Elmo, if he doesn't start next week, is out of my team.

I think he may have been benched because of the two tough away games at Tottenham and Chelsea. Bruce might have wanted more defensive cover.

The next game at home will show us where he really stands.

However, I'm a bit worried about my defense's balance. Too many players have similar fixtures.

With my current set, I'll have 4 defenders away in GW 15. Making the Alcaraz > Kolarov switch won't change that.

Now considering Liverpool or Arsenal defenders for rotation value, but not particularly keen on either. Would really want a United defender, but Vidic and Evra are so expensive...

                Something to mull over...

Yep, agree. Man C are just so defensively minded I'm looking more at their opponents rather than home and away. If Elmo doesn't figure I may downgrade to Bardsley as Sunderland are generally sound at the back but I'm giving him every chance. Bolton are the other team I'm looking at, playing well and good fixtures.

I dont think Drogbas essential at all , not at that price . You might miss out when he scores , but the overall benefit to rest of your team probably means hes replaceable.
I will dump him if looks like his price is dropping , im over 107 million and in top 14,000 .
I dumped malouda five gameweeks ago and was told he was essential. All he turned out to be was essentially crap

Thanks man its interesting that you say jarvis, he was so nearly on that list because of his favourable fixtures but i didnt add him because i have foley and didnt want two wolves players. Im leaning towards nzogbia as hes a long term option (as is cahill actually) the only thing that puts me off is the man utd game coming up. I know its only one game but if he gets 1-2 points ill look a right fool

N'Zog or Parker also seem to be good long term options.

Argh! Had Bale since the start and got rid of him this week - typical! Had VDV as captain instead so not all lost.

Meant to ask, I know you have to have three defenders playing but what happens if you have one 3 defenders and 2 strikers. One of the defenders doesnt play but your next bench player is a striker - do you end up with 2 defenders and 3 strikers at the end of the game week?

    Foster (Robinson)
    Ridge, Baines, Cashley (Hutton, Elmo)
    Nani, VDV, Malou, Nolan (Park)
    Berba, Torres, Doyle

That's my team. I have 1 free transfer, 0.1 in the bank, and 591 points in total... what should be my plan of advancement over the next few gameweeks?

That team looks sound for the time being. Possible moves for GW14 are Ridge for Kolarov if you can afford or switch Doyle, I wouldn't use both free's as I don't think you need to.You don't have any Arsenal coverage so I would look at that.

One of the best tips I heard on here was to 'play the fixtures', so when you go to 'my team' option on FPL click on data view and look at players next fixture, pick your team based on that and then look at your bench.Elmo or Hutton might be better defenders to shift but not sure what you can gain (maybe Cahill @ Bolton). I said Ridge because you can possibly upgrade him to Man C (Kolarov looks potential).Doyle because he's an injury doubt. I reckon if you do the data view option you'll find your team looks fairly sound.Sorry if doesn't help!

TOTALLY agree with that post about Berba. Giving him one more chance then that's it.

The only problem I have with Kolarov is the chance of him getting game time. Looks like he played 80 last game, will he play again for the next one?

It's a case of getting back to fitness, he's taking corners, has a shot on him and ManC don't concede much.If in doubt hold that free for the following week. It's early in the week so you may get more (and better) advice later in the week once this weekends dust has settled.

          You have a point actually.

Those transfers could wait until next week. You (IanC) would be able to make both without the 4 point hit.

I would wildcard though if you have one. Your team balance is all wrong, which means that any changes you make will involve multiple transfers.

I really don't know where to start.

Doyle, Park, Berbatov, Malouda and Elmohamady are best replaced (in order of importance).

Doyle can be changed to Elmander or Gyan.

Park to a bench fodder player (Ferguson).

Berbatov to whoever looks good then.

Malouda > Fabregas eventually, but it's advisable to keep at least one Chelsea attacker in your team.

Elmohamady meanwhile can be downgraded all the way to a 3.9 defender for bench warming duty. Simpson or Foley are best.

5 transfers, you can work them slowly though.

I'd start with downgrading Park, get Elmander for a 4 point hit if you fancy him to score this week too.

I think I may need to take the hit this week to get more points for the next. I used to be leading the league but got into a lot of BAD BAD transfers and regretted not having found this site earlier.

I'm really new at this and have much to learn. It's great to have found this site as I've learned a lot from the members and all.

Thanks for the advice Camzy, will look into it. I'll give Berbs one more week since it's Wigan at home. But I think the park for Ferguson and Doyle for Elmander is probably what I'll do first

IanC-from one 500 scorer to another (may not be the best advice)-I would take a 4 point hit and lose Malouda and Berbs. Not sure who to pick up, but the cash would give you plenty of options. Keepers and defense look strong (the defenders may be too strong) but you need another in form, consistent scorer at both mid field and striker.
