He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

Need to loose one of Tevez, A Cole, Drogba or VDV to raise funds for Nani.

Who would you bomb out if they are all fit?

on second thoughts, i have a feeling chelsea might not get more than 2 clean sheets in the next 6 weeks. so you might get ashley cole out, instead. This might purely be my personal knee jerk reaction though.

    I really want Vidic.
I have 2.3 in the bank so fall a little short when i sell konchesky, or mummy on their own. foster has terrible fixtures. so wanted to sell him to raise money. what should be my move.

I could have this team after an 8 point hit this week.

    Foster Jaask
    A.Cole Coleman Jara Ferdinand Stam
    Nani Fabregas N'Zogbia Arteta VDV
    Drogba Elmander Carroll

Hummmm, what'd ya think. Trades will be

You just gave me a good idea.

        Malouda -> Nani

        And

        Piquionne -> Elmander

Both free transfers. And logical. Wigan and Blackburn could snatch a goal easily, and this season is unpredictable so could even grab a couple.

      Malouda > Nani
      Elmo > Ferdinand

      No points hit.

You chose Piquionne a few weeks ago, stick by it. You must have had a reason for choosing him over Elmander, and more often than not, your first choice is usually the best one.

After getting 28 points and having 35 points on my bench I've knee-jerked for the first time this season, rightly or wrongly, who knows, I'll live with it, but I've ditched Malouda, Drogba and Elmo for an 8 point hit to Fabs, Vidic and Elmander.

    Team now looks like

    Foster/Hahnemann
    Vidic, Zhirkov, Dann, Coleman, Tamas
    Fabregas, Nani, Bale, Cahill, Brunt
    Torres, Carroll, Elmander

    Have 2.6 in the bank

Probably half my team get injured in the internationals now!

Foster, Al Habsi although Jaaskaleinen is an interesting thought.
Vidic or Evra, Kolarov, Coleman, Shawcross, Simpson

Which formation is supposed to be good for him? One of his big hauls came in a 4-5-1, as did all his hauls in Europe, I believe, and the other in a 4-4-2.

I will play Bale against Arsenal, but I'm not especially ecstatic about it.

My thinking on todays Everton Vs Arsenal game and that Arteta played deep is that he only played deep because it was against Arsenal? I haven't seen him play a full game since Liverpool and he didn't seem to defensive then. However it worries me that when Everton needed a goal Moyes took Arteta off. Maybe it is time to get rid.

Arteta has always played deep... He's been doing it all season and was playing the same role at the end of last season.

I had my reservations about him at the start of the season, although I eventually started with him because he started with two decent fixtures, and it made getting Fabs in for week 3 easy.

Moyes seems to be going into a 4-2-2-1-1 formation with the wingers ahead of the central midfielders and then Cahill playing off the striker and filling the gap in the middle virtually in a free role. You have all convinced me, Arteta out.

Bos was always under review after today. I've got 20-odd points out of him so that's not too bad.

Arteta's been very disappointing, so Arteta>Nani is obvious. Though I want to be shot of Malouda too.

well, if you can play a 3/4 man defence without depending on bosingwa starting a game then go ahead and sell malouda. But on the other hand wouldn't make much sense if your selling a sure starter who may still give you some returns. But all depends on how ur team is set up if you can becnh bosingwa and still have a decent 11 out then gsell malouda.

People will say Arteta, at the moment I am saying that too, Bosingwa probably too as he is a rotation threat. And then Malouda, Keep Drogba out the 4.

Drogba - full of Malaria; Malouda - shite; Bosingwa - rotational; Arteta - playing where he can't influence the game; Barton - two more games out.

Drogba/Malouda are going for me. I'd hold onto Arteta. Barton is highly influential and I would have said hold until I saw Newcastle's fixtures on his return: wba LIV bir MCY tot.

      Absolutely.

One of the top players on my watchlist.

If Carroll is ruled out for more than 2 weeks, I'm going to do Carroll > Gyan.

Why has O'Shea fallen out of favour? Is it simply because he isn't very good? I thought that he signed a 5 year contract pretty recently.

You need to have a big squad with some quality, something Chelsea have neglected to do.
1 to 11 Chelsea have the best side, 1 to 25 United are better.

He already has fallen out if you hadn't noticed it already. As i see it, if brown and rafael are both fit then O'shea will only be considered for lb or to feel in some other position plus he hasn't been playing that well either so better to stay away or get rid if you have him.

i ask because Wes Brown cannot cross a ball if his life depended on it! I figured Rafa would get the chance and O'shea the spot start here and there...but Wes Brown seems to really be out of his depth.

I agree completely! Rafa is getting his chanc, if hes still injured then I really think O Shea will be needed. Brown is completely out of his depth. For me I just thought O Shea would start because Villa are a team full of very big, strong players. Couldnt see Brown ever performing well against them.

    hi guys
still got my second free transfer. want to get vidic in. two questions:
    1. is it a good idea to lose berbatov before two home games (looks like he will fall in price tonight and rooney may return)?
    2. which one of elmander or kevin davies to replace him?

    cheers!

Its got to be a quirk. If it was the other way around, I would understand people calling him a home boy and believe it. Doesn't make any sense when K Davies is the opposite.
