He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

IMO that would be mental, at the end of the day there still the best side in the league and there both still quality players. Chelsea are having a mini bad spell but they will bounce back for sure. The fact that Rooney is the player people are considering for Drogba is even more mental, he's barely done anythin for about 8 months!

Out of interest, what's Chelseas clean sheet record like with and without Essien?! Soon as we knew he wouldn't play today I knew they wouldn't get a cleanie that what put me off going for Cole (c) again.

Monobrow is a terrible defender. Interesting that our worst football coincides with having Bosingwa in the side... First under that mong Scolari, and now under Ancelotti.

Ridiculous defending from him. He had no excuse to be so far away from the rest of our defensive line when we weren't even attacking.

I've always said that I don't like Cole and Bosingwa playing together in the same team. Time and time again Ivanovic and Ferreira were left alone, totally exposed as Sunderland countered.

I think this is spot on. I don't really have a clue about how good the other available centre backs were, but if you have two so slow centre backs you can't let your full backs play so far forward.

It's partly in the blood of Cashley and especially Bosingwa, but Ancelotti could also have made the point to them before the game and at half time that they left their centre backs too exposed when venturing forward and should have played it safer.

Cahill you muppet. Looks even worse on telly.

Dunno if it got mentioned earlier but we were playing 3 up front in last half hour, its nice to actually have some fit strikers for once!

      Were you there then today?

Tell me why Saha has started the last two games ahead of Yakubu? To me, it seems as though Cahill has a much better understanding with Yakubu than with Saha.

Arteta was below par today, and Heitinga has been a liability all season IMO.

Yep, took my daughter to her first ever game today.... she enjoyed it thank god.

Re Saha, Yakubu has scored one goal all season. Moyes has clearly lost patience. Saha could've scored a couple today, so looks justified to me.

Arteta was rubbish today, looked way off the pace. Says something when he gets hauled off when we are chasing a game

I can't remember how he was playing prior to the Liverpool game, but he was very decent in that game, and that one goal he scored was only a couple of games ago.

It's good to hear that you have fit players, but I'm uncertain over whether 3 players up front actually means playing more attacking football for Everton.

Because I think the best attacking/creative footballers in this Everton side are midfielders and do their best attacking work in midfield.

I absolutely didn't mean to have a dig at Everton, just to point out that playing 3 up front might not really be very attacking unless you have players suited for it.

Equally playing one up front, at home against a defence that is up for the taking is negative. We attacked far more when artetta went off.

Hmm yeah possibly, but that was also down to Arsenal being complacent towards the end and Arteta having an off day.

Oh well we better forget that game and look forward

I think it worked well in the situation, but can see why they didnt go with it from the start..... we wouldn't have got the ball off Arsenal with three in midfield. Coleman at right back still gave us a bit of width though.

But Saha should never in a million years be allowed to play on his own up front. It just isn't his game, especially the way we play. Fact.

I think Nani's price went up last night - so you shouldn't have to worry too much about bringing him in before next fri/sat, unless Malouda is dropping and you're struggling for cash.

Nani is currently on 23% 11,333 NTI today. Malouda is on 12% fall. -7,656 transfers out today. I just know that extra .2 will come in handy somewhere down the line.

He seems to have gained some pace, a bit like fabregas did last year. I've been impressed at how he seems to glide past players now. Starting to look like the real deal. Unlucky today, any team would struggle with 4 big players out. Great weekend for Arsenal though 😀
