He might be Chelsea’s top goal scorer in the Premier League but the signs are that Florent Malouda may well not be the cast iron FPL selection his early season form suggested. Malouda scored 6 goals in his first 5 games (one of those five games being a 7 minute cameo against West Ham) to carry on the form he was displaying in front of goal on the back end of last season.

However since Chelsea’s 4-0 against Blackpool the Frenchman has scored only one goal and contributed zero assists in the following 8 games. He has also picked up zero bonus points to top it off. That is not the sort of form that warrants inclusion in Fantasy Football teams and certainly not the type which can be justified under his price – currently £10.4m in the FPL game.

What is ominous is the fact that Chelsea’s early season form has slowed to a halt. Today’s 3-0 defeat (battering?) by Sunderland served to highlight how much Chelsea are stuttering at the moment and, whilst it’s clear they are missing some big players, there are signs that the machine that is Chelsea is beginning to rust. Based on this and their performance against Liverpool, extensive coverage of Chelsea players is not looking to be the golden goose it was a few weeks ago. Malouda’s poor returns appear to have coincided with Chelsea’s slowdown in goalscoring form.

To highlight how poor his returns have been it serves as a worthwhile exercise to compare his returns in the last 8 weeks to some (not all of course) of the other midfielder’s who the Frenchman is up against in our Fantasy Football Teams.

NameScore in last 8 GW’s
Nani50
Van Der Vaart49
Cahill46
Nolan45
Brunt41
Downing38
Bale34
Malouda24

Note that this list isn’t exhaustive but it makes worrying reading – just think about how many more points your FPL team would have had (and how much more money you would have to play with) if you’d gone with Nolan for that period? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

What is making it worst is Malouda’s inability to finish games. This serves to indicate that Ancellotti may not see him as essential as FPL managers did throughout the start of this season. For many tonights substitution will be the straw which breaks the camels back and at having maintained his highest price of £10.4m for the last 6 weeks now might be the time to cash in whilst you can get the best return.

To be fair to Florent Malouda, and to give a balanced perspective on things, he has been carrying an injury that with a full squad to pick from might have seen him given more rest. Indeed he mentioned it before the build up;

“It came against Blackburn. It was a tackle from behind but I had to carry on because it was a tough game and I was struggling.

“Until half-time I was OK but after half-time I could feel the ligament and the calf was a bit stiff so I was limping on the pitch and I had to take care of my ankle.”

This surely provides an explanation into the constant substitutions. However, FPL managers aren’t exactly a sentimental bunch and a half injured midfielder who is offering nothing points wise isn’t going to hang about long.

As a result no doubt thousands of managers will be dropping the Chelsea midfielder for someone in better form. Managers could do a lot worse than closing their eyes and picking one from the list above.

When you are happy with a player you really do never shut up about them?

Wolves average 0.14 goals per season, so have fun with Jarvis. When you're feeding goal machines like Kevin Doyle, you're never going to do well in fantasy football.

I just want to say that Chelsea-Sunderland today made me so immensely happy I never listened to any of the people who said "There is no room for loyalty" or "...for principles" or whatever, as this is exactly the reason why you're giving more than you're realising away, as even a slight microgram of ambivalence makes it so much less of an enjoyable experience. One of the most delighting matches I have ever watched. Chelsea looked like a bunch of proud primadonnas tripping around out on the field, especially seeing how Essien and Terry weren't there, and in the end like a bunch of, well... kids.

    Cole, Welbeck, perfect.

The commentator on Sky said that McEachran's been used as a 'super-sub' many times this season, but I've always thought that he's come on to waste a bit of time and to give him a bit of experience. Isn't he fairly defensive minded, I know he came on when 1-0 down at City, but he doesn't seem like the sort that will open up defences and get you a goal.

Also, what's with all these 'like-for-like' substitutions from managers recently when chasing games, (like Kalou for Malouda etc), surely you want more attacking bodies on and you get rid of some of the defensive players and take a chance?

*I'm not saying that Kalou is the equal of Malouda, but I mean in a purely positional sense, and Kalou being fresher that it's more of a 'like-for-like' move.

That move absolutely staggered me, and the majority of Chelsea fans from the sound of things... Malouda wasn't playing particularly well, but he wasn't playing nearly as badly as Zhirkov and Ramires were, and Malouda is competent in the middle of midfield - which is where we are struggling so badly at the minute.

With the injuries we have at the moment, McEachran (along with Kakuta and Kalou) are the only players on the bench who could realistically make any sort of difference when they come on. He's come on for various reasons so far, Ramires being shit a couple of times, experience once the game is over, but I'd never call him a 'super sub' unlike Kalou.

Did anyone else hear the commentator describe Kakuta as a 'Dutch U21 international defender' when he was preparing himself to come on! He, it wasn't Andy Gray but the other one, obviously had a piece of paper with notes on the Chelsea subs and read the info written down for either Bruma or van Aanholt, not Kakuta.

Yeah, I heard him say that rubbish too!

I thought Malouda did ok, he impresses me with his upper-body strength when he dribbles with the ball. He often has a player nipping at him and leaning into him, and Malouda just shrugs them off as he continues taking the ball forward.

I'm keeping only one of Drogba and Malouda, and I've decided to stick with Malouda, since there are more viable options to get up-front, than goal scoring midfielders. Malouda still plays very attacking in the best side in the league, (when they have all their players fit!)

Fine, Ramires isn't fit to wear the shirt at the moment, and Zhirkov isn't fit to wear the shirt when playing in the middle of midfield.

Seriously though, there are Conference players with a better first touch than Ramires. His second touch is invariably a tackle, which he usually loses.

You've seen more of him than me but even that must be what, a dozen games? Saying someone isn't fit to wear the shirt after being in the country 6 months is borderline mental. The guy is obviously a class act and just needs time. Of course there is the option that he's pulling off the greatest con of all time and managing to fool some of the best managers in football.

simpson, foley both 3.9, clark from villa plays in midfield and will have a run of games IF his injury is just a knock, knight from bolton has a good run of games,,theres plenty of options, but i reckon a bolton defender shud do ok for you for 4 game spell, prob 16 points or so.

Okay I was thinking of Malou > Fabs as a given transfer, but I'm in a dilemma for my defense... here's my team ATM

    Foster (Robinson)
    Ridge, Baines, Cashley (Hutton, Elmo)
    Nani, VDV, Malou, Nolan (Park)
    Berba, Torres, Doyle

So my team after the change will be

    Foster (Robinson)
    Ridge, Baines, Cashley (Hutton, Elmo)
    Nani, VDV, Fabs, Nolan (Park)
    Berba, Torres, Doyle

    Any suggestions?

Doubling on Brum in defense is not good. Get a ManUtd defender.

Midfied is fine (get a bench fodder player instead of Park...)

Strikeforce could be a LOT better. Doyle and Berbatov could be replaced with Elmander and Gyan or Carroll (if fit).

So tempted to wilcard...team's not in too bad shape just keep hitting red arrows:

    Potential W/C team:

    Foster, Jaaskelinen
    Cashley, Vidic, Coleman, Jara, Foley
Fabregas, Nani, van der Vaart, Jarvis, Albrighton
    Drogba, Elmander, Carroll

Go for it? Or stay put?

That's his potential WC team not his actual team!

        Don't wildcard by the way.

Your team is good. Just replace Malouda with Nani and use the funds on defense. Your team is then 75% like mine, and you'll do great if that's the case xD

Ah, then that's a thinker. I wouldn't do it now, Nani instead of Malouda and another defender instead of Elmo would be enough. But if Carroll is out for a long time or internationals bring more injuries, I would use the wildcard.

or just Malouda to Nani and also not to hurry with getting rid of Elmo, getting defender for a 4 point hit is never a good idea

Bit too much in defence. I would downgrade one of vidic or a cole - manu have a good run of games so id stick with vidic. Also downgrade foster to krul or alhabsi. Or downgrade both keepers to alhabsi and gordon, there fixtures rotate rather well for the next 10-15 gws. The rest of your team is fine and ul have a but more in bank for the future and its sure tp come in handy.

Is Bramble the best option from the Sunderland rear guard?

Bramble's cheap, often gets BP's, could get a goal from a corner.

Elmo isn't secure and hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire with his attacking returns. One unconventional assist for whacking the ball onto Poulsen's hand...

Personally I wouldn't want any of the sunderland defence. Mummy was a good shout as OOP but I can't see them keeping too many cleanies. I might be wrong though...

They let in only one goal at Spurs, and none at Chelsea. They've kept Man U at bay and others too. Considering they've had fairly poor fixtures up till now, the amount of clean sheets they have is impressive.

However, I share your concerns that they can easily let it all slip against the weaker teams too!
