With no other team in the top four winning last weekend, Arsenal made ground on their main rivals with a hard-earned 2-1 win at Goodison Park to end Everton’s six match unbeaten run and sit just two points off the summit.

Arsene Wenger’s recent comments that Cesc Fabregas is approaching full fitness were perhaps verified as the captain grabbed the Gunners second goal, but Wenger’s decision to replace Jack Wilshere with Denilson for the second half was fundamental not just in allowing the visitors to play further forward in the middle of the park, but in giving Fabregas the platform to attack.

Commenting on the half-time swap after the game, Wenger explained:

“I wanted a second holding player to win the second balls from the headers and I thought Wilshere looked a bit tired today.”

Analysing the performance of both players, though, it would seem the Brazilian offered a lot more than just that.

As the first chalkboard above shows, Wilshere made 43% of his passes in the Everton half and 31% in his own defensive third of the pitch. Denilson’s arrival after half time pushed Arsenal forward, however, with 69% of his passes made in the Everton half and just 6% in his own defensive third.

The influence in this substitution can be seen in Everton’s own half time change, where Jack Rodwell replaced Johnny Heitinga. Their passing chalkboards were the polar opposite of the above Arsenal ones, a result of Denilson’s introduction.

Whereas Heitinga foraged forward in the first forty-five, making 54% of his passes in the Gunners half, Rodwell was a lot more defensive, managing only 31% of his passes in outside of his own half, with none at all in his opponent’s final third, as Arsenal seized control of the crucial midfield area.

The following Arsenal “Average Position” map from the Goodison Park game shows how far forward Denilson (15) played compared to Wilshire (19). Interestingly, Marouanne Chamakh (29) played deeper overall than Fabregas (4), such is his willingness to drop back and graft for the cause. Arsenal have won more games and have more points on the road than any other team in the Premier League and Chamakh’s unselfish game has been pivotal to their recent performances away from the Emirates.

Although neither Wilshere or Denilson will offer any potentially decent Fantasy returns, it is their knock-on effect on the team shape and fluidity that could determine substantial hauls from others. Sunday, certainly, showed Denilson offered a better balance against David Moyes’ side as a holding midfielder than the young Englishman. One further pointer on the Denilson substitution is summed up by the number of shots Fabregas managed on Sunday. The second forty-five saw Cesc manage two shots at goal plus one blocked shot. In the first half, with Wilshere part of the Gunners engine room, Fabregas didn’t manage a single attempt on goal.

Nope 1 is not a 4 point hit... Got 2 transfers, but would probably need to pull the trigger tonite before A. Cole's price rises...

is zhirkov and malouda --> vidic and zhirkov good transfers for a 4 point hit?

going on recent times, hits almost never work out.

i'm assuming there 6 points is more then likely for vidic but also pretty possible for zhirkov as well?

also malouda as likely to go as cahill? both tricky away games.
    should i save the transfer?

sorry for the long rambling post

Does anyone else think Clelsea are going to batter Birmingham just to prove a point next weekend? Wishful thinking?
Going to get Nani back in this week. Obvious choice is Malouda to Nani with change to spare.
Little anoying voice in my head is saying Malouda is gona come good soon and to get rid of bale as he's not gona score in the league again for another age. Nani, Malouda & Fabs would be an awesome midfield if Malouda was back on form.

I'm thinking the same about Malouda. I think Chelsea are going to destroy someone shortly and with their injuries ATM if Malouda is on the pitch it is hard not to see him either scoring or assisting. The problem is the same applies to Nani and United. I cant decide who to go with.
On the other side you do need VDV he is gold ATM

Not sure he's oop any more as Newcastle have gone back to 4-4-2 of late, but he's obviously a goal threat. Fixtures are maybe 50-50 between the 2 sides. Maybe Adam will be injured just to make your choice easier?

Juan Sebastian Veron, Lazio to Manchester United, £28.1m July 2001. At least you did manage to off load him to some other bunch of mugs.

Massimo Taibi, Venezia to Manchester United, £4.5m, August 1999 United splashed out in the hope of finding the next Peter Schmeichel, to no avail. The Italian goalkeeper lasted just four months.

[Apologies for reposting, but seeing as no-one's commenting on the recent Terry/Alex article anymore, and CFC are being talked about here, it probs makes more sense to post it here!]

“Ancleotti’s side may now be forced to push forward for goals with little chance of shutting out opponents”

I’d bloody hope so! But they’ll need Fat Frank back first me thinks. Since he’s been out, their goal output has shrunk significantly. This article here talks about how key he is to Chelsea’s attacking returns: http://sportingblogs.wordpress.com/2010/11/16/%E2%80%9Cfrankly-my-dear-we-do-give-a-damn%E2%80%9D-why-lampard%E2%80%99s-return-can%E2%80%99t-come-soon-enough-for-the-blues%E2%80%A6/

I own A.Cole, Malouda, and Drogba, and all three might well be exiting my team this week. I can’t see cleanies for Cashley, with no Terry/Alex, with Essien suspended, and esp. with Ferreira at CB. Cashley’s bonus points have dried up like a Saharan puddle of late. I can’t see Malouda/Drogba getting returns until Fat Frank returns (certainly not whilst without Lamps AND Essien). Could be time for Torres/Van Persie, Vidic, and Van der Vaart for me...

One silver lining to this Chelsea cloud… there’s a good chance some budget kids (Bruma / Van Aanholt) might get game time. Good for CFC’s future maybe. Not so great for fantasy though...

        Cheers JT.
My Bendy Bus shout last term paid off rather well. Alas, this time, not so. Although, I have been impressed with his mighty bench-warming abilities.
Not too sure on how to re-draft my side - I quite want to bin Bendtner Drogba O'Shea A.Cole Dann and Malouda (all for a variety of fixture, form and selection) problems. At the mo have a watchlist full of Gyan, Torres/Tevez, Vidic, Onuoha/Turner, and a few others. Stumped on a midfielder other than TCahill/VdV though. Any shouts?

Yeah Bendy won't score you too many from the bench. Loads of good strikers to choose from as you know, but I'm struggling to look past VDV / Cahill in midfield.....nope I think they're your best options. I'd look at getting someone from Bolton as they're playing well under Coyle but then their main men are Davies & Elmander. Their midfielders seem to be taking it in turns to get assists

I really hate the idea that our premier league is becoming a retirement home for old players looking for one last payday. What about all the young talent at Villa, one of those, probably Albrighton will see less time on the pitch now. Shame on you Houllier.

    Foster, Hahnemann

    Evra, Steinsson, Coleman, Konchesky, Onouha/Bramble

    Cahill, Malouda, Fabregas, Brunt, Nani

    Doyle, Elmander, Rooney/Torres

    Is it any good?

I like Konchesky at his price. I feel that Liverpool can keep cleansheets, even in away games. Do you not think that they will keep many? Plus it saves me having to transfer him in for GW17 or whenever it is.

Doyle is all I can afford, if I don't have him then I need someone else cheaper than 5.1. At least he has ok fixtures going for him so that is why I have him at the moment. The alternative to him is Jarvis/Odemwingie instead of Brunt/Doyle.

I've got Coleman and Konchesky who rotate well:

WHM, WBM, AST, WIG, FUL, BIR, WOL

and Bramble and Steinsson rotate well:

NEW, BPL, WHM, BLA, BOL, WBM BPL, BLA

            Thoughts?

They do indeed appear to rotate well. I considered Konchesky myself a few weeks back but glad I didn't get him in the end. As a Liverpool fan you must have been dismayed at that performance at Stoke?

I'd be going for Cahill as a Bolton defender instead of Steinsson if you can afford him. Rest of your team looks none too shabby.. maybe get Simpson of Newcastle as a good cheapy? Not much help I know, I need some sleep!

Personally like Jarvis/Odem a lot more out of those two combos.

As for Konchesky...I'm not sure. He got BPs on his debut which looked very promising as he provided the width they lacked, but in terms of clean sheets I have little faith in Liverpool. Still, for his price, he has as good a chance as most, not as proven this season as Brum/Sunderland defences though.

(Following up from a discussion on page 1)... I guess I'll keep an eye on Vidic's price and hold off for moves following the int'l games... Adam's injury (even if not requiring any action) brought up the fact that doing 2 transfers the day before int'l games might not be the smartest of ideas...
