Arsenal’s miserable defeat to Braga was compounded by the hamstring injury to Cesc Fabregas which is set to sideline the mercurial playmaker and Fantasy favourite for yet another spell. The 2-0 defeat left Wenger’s side staring at the possibility of Champions League elimination, while over Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were far from convincing but thankfully disposed of Zilina without fuss or casualties….

Wenger’s much-changed lineup in Portugal saw Fabregas start in a midfield that also included Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere – all players that have been rotated in the Gunners starting XI of late. Nicklas Bendtner earned an opportunity as the lone striker, while at the back Wenger brought in Johan Djourou to partner Sebastien Squillaci. Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs took up the full-back positions.

In terms of the impact on Arsenal’s Fantasy prospects, while the defeat will do little for their confidence, it was of course the injury to Fabregas which will resonate through to us Fantasy Managers. Wenger’s decision to start his skipper, a doubt with his hamstring injury before the game, backfired massively; the Arsenal boss at least acknowledged as much in his post-match comments

“As for Cesc, it’s a hamstring injury on the other leg [to that which has troubled him this season]. It’s hard to say how long he’ll be out for. He’ll definitely miss the weekend – we will have to assess [him] tomorrow. It could be two to three weeks…It is very disappointing because I had a hesitation to play him before the match started. I took the gamble and it back-fired on us.”

It seems likely that Wenger will likely be cautious with his skipper from this point on. He will surely want to avoid another recurrence and that could well prolong the absence. We’ve seen in the past how Arsenal’s injuries can stretch out in their duration, regardless of the optimistic updates presented by Wenger so perhaps around a three week absence seems the most likely outcome.

The responsibility on Samir Nasri, his second-half replacement last night, will now increase and he provides the obvious alternative for Fabregas owners looking to keep faith with the Gunners midfield. The likes of Wilshere, Walcott and Bendtner will come out of the game with little credit, while Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin will surely slot into the weekend lineup at Villa Park having been rested in last night’s game. Like Nasri, they will now be expected to step up to help Arsenal regain momentum in the absence of Fabregas.

As a final sidenote, the medial ligament strain suffered by Emmanuel Eboue in last night’s game will likely keep him out of contention for a long spell – that will cement Bacary Sagna’s start and make him less of a rotation risk around Champions League matches.

Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Zilina was far from plain sailing, but in contrast to Arsenal, they will have been pleased with their night’s work given their run of league form.

Carlo Ancelotti started with an inexperienced side, handing opportunities to the likes of Ross Turnbull in goal and Jefrrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt in the back four, Josh McEachran in midfield and Gael Kakuta up front. There was a smattering of experience around them however as Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba both started. Daniel Sturridge also earned a start and he looked the most likely before he eventually fired Chelsea’s equaliser early in the second-half. Ultimately it was Drogba and Malouda were to combine to win the game. Starting in a midfield role once again, Malouda’s winner was his first goal in seven games in all competitions.

Saturday’s trip to Newcastle is likely to see Mikel come back into the midfield, while Alex will surely return to partner Bran Ivanovic at the back with Ashley Cole returning at left-back. The likes of Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka, both used as subs last night, would also look well placed for starts. That would seem likely to see Malouda take up a midfield role once again with Yuri Zhirkov presumably still an injury doubt. Josh McEachran, impressive in last night’s game, drawing praise from Ancelotti, he is an option here but is likely to figure from the bench again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

jarvis is in good form at the moment, also sunderland weak down the left so i would fancy him to get points. The question is cesc replacement -4points Vs Jarvis, i would go with jarvis and save the transfer

personally i would wait to see what if chelsea continue their poor form. Man Utd, Ars and Chelsea all have tough fitures in their net four games so there is no obvious solution.

The other option is to keep hold of him if it is only 2/3 three weeks, as most will probably transfer him back in. It doesnt make sense to get rid gw15 and get him back in gw17 its a waste of 2 transfers and 4 points IMO

This is exactly my feeling. Unless you have a really poor 5th midfielder or 3rd striker most of mvp benches should be able to absorb the loss of Fabs for a few weeks.

I had Bale on my bench this weekend anyway so all I've just done is put Fabs there instead and Bale will partner VdV this weekend. Just hope neither of those 2 get injured tonight now.

Fabs would be coming straight back in my team once he's fit anyway and I'd have to bench one of my mids every week anyway so I really don't see what good it would do me getting rid of Fabs for a hit and then taking another hit for him in a few weeks time.

Can anyone help me out with my defence - I have Boateng (doubtful), Faye (out of favour), Williamson (banned), Elmo (who knows) and Jones (vs MU).

Was thinking of getting rid of Elmo, but with Zenden possibily out maybe he will play this week. Or else do Faye to Bardsley and play him, Jones and hope Boateng/ELmo starts. Any other suggestions?

I do also have Fabs but think I'll just have to bench him to address my rubbish back line, my other forwards are strong enough.

      2 schools of thought.
      1) make 2/3 tranfers and change completely (or wildcard?)
      2) keep them in and hope for the best, knowing that you have saved points. Defenders arent scoring great this season anyway

Thanks - wildcard already used unfortuately. Don't really want to take a hit for a defender so think I'll probably just do the one change. I suppose it's better to have a 0 than a -2, which is what I would get if I took a hit for a defender who didn't get a clean sheet and only played 60mins+.

that defence is atrocious. jones is your most reliable guy when he should be about your 4th most reliable. elmo to bardsley should begin to free up some funds if needed, id get konchesky next week, kalorov after that, keep pecking away and you should have a nice defense just in time for the WC window when you can start all over again.

I just don't feel it with Cahill, and I don't want Arteta. I guess it has to be Nasri then.

I don't have VDV...so if he;s fit the decision is easy for me. If not I may go Cahill....maybe Bale. It'll be for a hit as well..think its' worth it as the alternative for me is enrique off the bench, or Jara if I'm lucy. I already have big doubts over O Shea and Brunt.

I don't think Cesc out will necessarily mean Arsenal suffer (not arguing that it isn't a big loss), i think RVP will return to the starting lineup this week and i can see him stepping up.

He would be in my team if Elmander didn't have such a good fixture this week, as it is i think i'll have to go with Nasri. I know i'll be kicking myself if RVP scores big though.

when people ask when someone will rise or fall, we are all pretty much guessing. I guess we could just ignore those questions when asked. Im on Total FPL 5 times a day like a junkie. when fabs was hurt last time, his price went down similarly to what Im expecting this time. He may be only 25%-30% to fall by thursday night, but he will be dropped en masse on friday. perhaps definitely is strong but if you want to wager on it Id be happy to lay down 20 quid.

i dont think the debate is as simple as cesc out for another player. The most expensive alternative is malouda some 2m cheaper, so cesc out changes the structure of most teams. I would be tempted to hold for a week and make two transfers next gw

i brought in cahill for fabs about an hour ago. I am worried about it leading to unecessary moves but I might upgrade a defender. when fabs is declared fit down the road, i can wait a week and make a double move to get him back. I remember when i dropped fabs earlier i was sweating not having him 1st game back at home to wolves but as it turned out, he didnt produce.

    GW15:

    Foster (Krul)
    Simpson Vidic Coleman
    VDV Malouda Nani(c) Adam
    Piq Drogba Carroll

    Bench: Mummy Fabregas Alcaraz

As you can see my bench is very weak with only Mummy a slim chance of featuring.

    A: Mummy > Foley + Piq > Elmander

    B: Fabregas > Pedersen(or 11m) + Piq > Elmander

    C: Fabregas > 6.2 + Piq > Tevez

as long as your 1st 11 start it doesnt matter. If it is a free transfer then maybe, but go for a long term player who rotates well like ridgewell, dann, onuha etc
if it is a 4 point hit, absolutley not

The problem is, Coleman and Mummy are both doubtful and Simpson could concede a lot with Chelsea on a mission.

Foley coming in wouldn't just be for 1 GW they have some decent fixtures.

Elmander IMO could comfortably get those 4 points back over Piq

the mummy fad is dead whilst welbeck gyan and bent are playing well supported by Onuhua. So that would be a solid long term transfer. Fabregas will be back in a few weeks so is not long term unless you dont plan to put him back in.
Elmander is a good option IMO. Other options adam>silva or yaya

Then think about Fabregas. You could either bench him, as you have 7 good players up front, or take a punt on Cahill or Nasri for -4p.

Anyone considering bringing on Walcott for fabrigas? His spot should be more secure now with nasri going into the middle.

Nah – only reason I would’ve kept fabs during arsenals tough fixture schedule is he is generally fixture proof – the same cant be said of Walcott

    Best option this week...

    a) Mignolet -> VdS (Have to play Carson if not)
    b) Tamas -> Kolarov
    c) Tamas -> Vidic

It's a 4 point hit but my defence is in tatters so I need to make some changes.

Oi Gooners, is Nasri a good replacement for Fabs or is it best to stay well clear of Arsenal as they clearly look out of form and a bit rubbish at the mo, and without Fabs.......

I reckon they'll be back with a vengeace at the weekend, RVP stepping up to fill the void left by Fabs

don't think they are completely out of form, especially Nasri. I think he's good value, but there are alternatives like cahill with better fixtures.

        Are Everton's fixtures really better?

agree. problem is that all possible replacements don't have good fixtures for this week. for me the guy who gets in now, will be out as soon as Fabs is back

Same, that's why i think Nasri is the obvious choice really.

I do have Arteta already though.

then forget about cahill. what do you think about kuyt against a weak Spurs defence or Pederson (I know it's a bit chasing points, but he's banging them in lately)

Pederson i'm not sure, looks good after this week i'm just not sure he can keep up that kind of form, seems to be an all or nothing kind of player and i'd be worried about a run of 2's.

Kuyt could be a great shout with Gerrard out, whenever i've had him in he's been rubbish though, so i wouldn't get involved but it could pay off

I have some nice memories as I was winning my mini league because of his goals a couple of seasons ago. but I'm not sure if I should take him over Nasri or Cahill. My main rival has neither of the three player.

Cahill does look a real good option - but Fabs to Cahill feels a bit like a step back and when he buggers off for 6 weeks i will only have to swap him back out.

I have no Man City coverage so may go Silva, but then that would leave me with no Arsenal...perhaps this:

        Torres > Tevez & Fabs > Nasri / Cahill

        Hhhhmmm....

Elmo to Vidic would be my choice. How many free transfers have you got?

If two then consider simpson to Kolorov too.

    OK, who smokes bananas?

Monkeys with bad breath...hahahahaha! Good one...But the real question is this:

    Team A:

    Foster
    Bosingwa/Rafael/Coleman
    Arteta/Bale/Nani/Nasri
    Tevez/Berbatov/Elmander (c)

    Or...

    Team B:

    Foster
    Bosingwa/Rafael/Coleman
    Arteta/Bale/Nani/Nasri/N'Zogbia
    Tevez/Elmander (c)

Yes, the difference is - play Berb and drop N'Zog or play N'zog and drop Berb.

    What to do?

I really did not want to go the Cahill/Arteta route this weekend after Arteta did nothing in my team earlier.

Worth "wasting" a free trade on one of them for Fab this weekend?
