Arsenalโ€™s miserable defeat to Braga was compounded by the hamstring injury to Cesc Fabregas which is set to sideline the mercurial playmaker and Fantasy favourite for yet another spell. The 2-0 defeat left Wengerโ€™s side staring at the possibility of Champions League elimination, while over Stamford Bridge, Carlo Ancelottiโ€™s side were far from convincing but thankfully disposed of Zilina without fuss or casualtiesโ€ฆ.

Wengerโ€™s much-changed lineup in Portugal saw Fabregas start in a midfield that also included Theo Walcott, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere โ€“ all players that have been rotated in the Gunners starting XI of late. Nicklas Bendtner earned an opportunity as the lone striker, while at the back Wenger brought in Johan Djourou to partner Sebastien Squillaci. Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs took up the full-back positions.

In terms of the impact on Arsenalโ€™s Fantasy prospects, while the defeat will do little for their confidence, it was of course the injury to Fabregas which will resonate through to us Fantasy Managers. Wengerโ€™s decision to start his skipper, a doubt with his hamstring injury before the game, backfired massively; the Arsenal boss at least acknowledged as much in his post-match commentsโ€ฆ

“As for Cesc, it’s a hamstring injury on the other leg [to that which has troubled him this season]. It’s hard to say how long he’ll be out for. He’ll definitely miss the weekend โ€“ we will have to assess [him] tomorrow. It could be two to three weeks…It is very disappointing because I had a hesitation to play him before the match started. I took the gamble and it back-fired on us.”

It seems likely that Wenger will likely be cautious with his skipper from this point on. He will surely want to avoid another recurrence and that could well prolong the absence. Weโ€™ve seen in the past how Arsenalโ€™s injuries can stretch out in their duration, regardless of the optimistic updates presented by Wenger so perhaps around a three week absence seems the most likely outcome.

The responsibility on Samir Nasri, his second-half replacement last night, will now increase and he provides the obvious alternative for Fabregas owners looking to keep faith with the Gunners midfield. The likes of Wilshere, Walcott and Bendtner will come out of the game with little credit, while Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin will surely slot into the weekend lineup at Villa Park having been rested in last nightโ€™s game. Like Nasri, they will now be expected to step up to help Arsenal regain momentum in the absence of Fabregas.

As a final sidenote, the medial ligament strain suffered by Emmanuel Eboue in last nightโ€™s game will likely keep him out of contention for a long spell โ€“ that will cement Bacary Sagnaโ€™s start and make him less of a rotation risk around Champions League matches.

Chelseaโ€™s 2-1 victory over Zilina was far from plain sailing, but in contrast to Arsenal, they will have been pleased with their nightโ€™s work given their run of league form.

Carlo Ancelotti started with an inexperienced side, handing opportunities to the likes of Ross Turnbull in goal and Jefrrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt in the back four, Josh McEachran in midfield and Gael Kakuta up front. There was a smattering of experience around them however as Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba both started. Daniel Sturridge also earned a start and he looked the most likely before he eventually fired Chelseaโ€™s equaliser early in the second-half. Ultimately it was Drogba and Malouda were to combine to win the game. Starting in a midfield role once again, Maloudaโ€™s winner was his first goal in seven games in all competitions.

Saturdayโ€™s trip to Newcastle is likely to see Mikel come back into the midfield, while Alex will surely return to partner Bran Ivanovic at the back with Ashley Cole returning at left-back. The likes of Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka, both used as subs last night, would also look well placed for starts. That would seem likely to see Malouda take up a midfield role once again with Yuri Zhirkov presumably still an injury doubt. Josh McEachran, impressive in last nightโ€™s game, drawing praise from Ancelotti, he is an option here but is likely to figure from the bench again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ouch, must have hurt to have Arteta on bench last gw.

At least you dont have the Fab issue to deal with.

Wasn't really bothered by Arteta scoring. It was an easy decision to put him on the bench tbh and I'm happy he did score. Hopefully it will get his game going again even if it was an ugly goal.

Well Elmander is by no means a season keeper. Will probably get rid after the home game to WBA.

That being said, I' really tempted by giving him the armband this week but I have a bad feeling about that game.

Aah, now were talking. I'm also considering the exact trades but was thinking of only bringing Torres in gw 18. Therefore giving me more time to assess Stevie G's return date.

You think it's essential going in with some bolton cover this weekend? I'm starting Adam and my h2h opponent has elmander.

Im just worried about Lee though. Did he have his run of good scores? Also not a big BPts darling.

Bolton are the form team and have some good fixtures for the next few weeks starting with Blackpool at home - I now have Lee and Elmander.

I would be as wary of Stevie G as I am with Frankie L these days. Both priced on their past glories rather than what they will realistically achieve this season.

So......BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The bookies seem to think that Tony McCoy's got it wrapped up, but given that it's a public vote I reckon Graeme McDowell at 5/1 is a good shout. Loads more golfers/golf fans/people who love the Ryder Cup than horsey types around surely?

Tom Daley at 28/1 is also worth a bet I'd say. Everyone loves little Tom don't they?

Tony McCoy. Even bigger joke than giving it to Ryan Giggs. Whatever happened to the "of the year" part of the award? Come to think of it what happened to the "Sport" bit too, horse racing is a type of betting rather than a sport.

TBH I wouldn't be too convinced by the McCoy odds seen as they will be adjusted for the fact that those interested in Tony McCoy are likely to be heavy gamblers.

So help me, I'm actualy considering Arteta as a Fab replacement. I have a feeling Everton will put at least 2 or 3 past the baggies on Saturday & Mikky will hopefully be involved... Everton are also long overdue a penalty

    Fab&Chamakh>Tevez&Arteta for a 4 point hit...

Or just play it safe & bench Fab, do Chamakh>Elmander & leave it at that??

I've had him in & out of my team this season & he hasn't been good. Hasn't been absolutely terrible either mind you, just nowhere near the points he was scoring last year.

But he defintely has the FF pedigree... I'm seriously tempted in case he notches a couple of long overdue goals against West Brom, in which case he will be the biggest bandwagon since Elmander last week.

I will wait with the kolarov move if kolarov does not rise or elmo drops. Stoke have scored in all their home games so far this season.

Not sure if you are taking 4 or 8 pt hit...?

Maybe just fab-->Cahill this week & kolarov next week.

my theory is with no1 on the bench i have

                elmo (likely 1point)
                Boateng (likely 0points)
                fab (0points)
                barton (0points)
                albrighton (0points)

so cahill kolarov and vdv have to score 9 points between them to break even and anything after that is a bonus. I can see that happening

And there could be more surprises and u'll end up without 11 outfield players. I think I am gonna make a hit and bench Konchesky away at Tot cause I feel it right. Lately I am in mood for hits.

I am waiting until 11.15 and assesing the conditions and making my transfers then. It will likely be an 8 point hit, but as i said i think for once it will be worth it.

Daniel you have a great scoredont go hit crazy, but if it will benifit your team then i'd go for it.

Someone talk to me about the potential of David Silva. From what I've seen his points tally is considerably lower than his performances deserve. Likely to break out with a little burst of assists/goals/bonus soon, or just not ideally suited to FF?

        Not useless at all.

From what I've seen he suffers from 'Luka Modric Syndrome'. Very good player, not agreat FF prospect.

Also, with Balotelli coming back he won't be playing through the middle as hbe sometimes has.

I wouldn't bother myself but I might be proven wrong...
