Seven wins later and we have the final four in the Fantasy Football Scout Cup III, sponsored by Paddy Power. Three of the four remaining fantasy managers will win sizeable free bets, but one could well walk away with absolutely nothing (gooner dave is the only semi-finalist with a top-score prize so far). Let’s take a look at how the semi-finals line-up…

Semi-Final One

tippman Vs. DRP

tippman‘s Route To The Semi-Finals: 1st Rd – 67-66 Mark, 2nd Rd – 60-33 Pieman, 3rd Rd – 55-52 Daz, 4th Rd – 30-24 livnal, 5th Rd – 41-37 Unwilling player, Last 16 – 41-39 Manif, Quarters – 65-62 User.

DRP’s Route To The Semi-Finals: 1st Rd – 59-55 nomar, 2nd Rd – 50-37 deppy35, 3rd Rd – 54-43 coisou, 4th Rd – 33-30 Markus1, 5th – 42-41 Gazzamania, Last 16 – 60-55 Animons, Quarters – 70-61 DollyDaisy.

As if seeded, the first semi-final pits the highest-ranked fantasy manager in the semi-finals against the lowest-ranked. 2,682nd in the world DRP may be in a spot of bother here, having already taken taken a four-point hit, and with a couple of injury concerns. Perhaps those transfers have addressed his problems, we will have to see. As for tippman, well he looks well set this week having already got a couple of Bolton players in for their good run.

Semi-Final Two

The Von Vs. gooner dave

The Von’s Route To The Semi-Finals: 1st Rd – 67-64 Joe Mellor, 2nd Rd – 59-48 Gumby, 3rd Rd – 63-55 Duffman11, 4th Rd – 37-29 andy85wsm, 5th Rd – 39-37 Dksbananas, Last 16 – 51-43 BigRig, Quarters – 71-59 DaFoe22.

gooner dave’s Route To The Semi-Finals: 1st Rd – 74-54 skinnyfish, 2nd Rd – 60-55 jms, 3rd Rd – 60-55 beeduybe, 4th Rd – 29-22 Azfad, 5th Rd – 40-37 coot, Last 16 – 45-44 Back to Back Ballacks, Quarters – 75-56 sandgrounder.

Most of The Von’s and gooner dave’s big-hitters cancel each other out, apart from one key match-up. The Von’s Kevin Davies against gooner dave’s Carlos Tevez could hold the key in this tie. Having said that, how both fantasy managers deal with an injured Cesc Fabregas could also be the deciding factor.

So good luck to all four semi-finalists this week, and I’ll bring you news of how it played out next week.

You doing many other transfers? If not it's probably worth doing it. Both Samba and Konchesky might end up doing something, Spurs can't defend at all and United can be dodgy.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see the New v Che game called off.

People must remember how little snow there was when some games were called off last year? It doesn't really come down to whether the pitch is playable or not either, it's more about safety of getting to the grounds etc.

I don't think it will be called off. Last year when so many games were called off, even then no Newcastle game was postponed. It won't be for reason such as unplayable pitch atleast. Don't know much about safety of supporters, it may be called off for that reason.

hmmm mine would go to Tevez for value (not great) or VDV form and if vdv doesnt play then Bale. Bale isnt the worst captain choice in the world i spose.

Well i'm not sure at all. Just pointing out that there were games called off last year with much much less snow than is there at the moment, if the snow keeps falling my GUESS is that it won't go ahead.

Also saw some people saying the pitch will be fine, so it will go ahead - just pointing out that it probably won't come down to the state of the pitch.

If you can sort out an emergency captain strategy then go for it, not like he'll have a 1 pointer or anything.

Exactly, it won't be called off because of pitch as Newcastle have excellent facilities to take care of their ground. It might be called off because of safety of supporters.

    Cole, Cahill, Samba, Elmo, Jara
    VDV, Nasri, Nani, Arteta, Barton
    Drogba, Carroll, Piquionne

4.7M in the bank,1 free transfer what would people advise i do?

Thinking maybe Barton > Lee or Elmo > Coleman?

Any better changes i could do? and who should i captain?

Would like to being in ELmander but i can't get rid of Piq when he is at home to Wigan. And if i do bring in Lee who should i bench?! its hard to pick 1 out thats why i think its best to bring in a defender, so maybe Baines/Coleman?

Don't bother selling Barton for Lee. You have 4 midfielders who could all do well and 3 strikers who i'm guessing you want to play. I would bolster defence. Maybe even look at selling Cole.

Yeah im happy playing my 4 mids and 3 strikers this week. Defense is a problem but selling Cole? that would just make it weaker! i was thinking of getting rid of Mummy?

Or perhaps it is time to lose Carroll? Newcastle fixtures are getting a bit tough over the next few weeks.

Chelsea haven't been playing great and even then they have some really tough games coming up. Always a risk selling somebody like him but if you sell him you could maybe get Evra and if you're willing to take a hit get Baines for Mummy.

Taking my threadbare squad into account and the fact there is a very good chance the Chelsea-Newcastle game will be called off I have come up with a plan I would like opinions on.

    Fabregas to Cahill
    Elmohamady to Evra
    Carroll to Elmander

This would cost me 8 points but I think if anybody is going to get me the 8 back this GW it would be a Utd defender and Elmander, I also want these 2 long term.

If the game is cancelled I would then field 10 players with Albrighton missing out.

Is this a smart move yes or no?
    Cheers.

Kolarov Coleman Cole A, (P Jones, Konchesky)

Nzog, Nasri, VDV (C) Nani (Albrighton)

    Carroll, Drogba, Elmander

I have made one transfer this week but have 6.9 in the bank. I haven't taken any four point hits yet this season but was thinking it might be an idea. Any suggestions?

If the game goes ahead I see Carroll doing nothing. Chelsea defence is perfect to cope with him and Newcastle.
The one thing Chelsea struggle against is pace (like Sunderland) and not power. Newcastle dont have this threat.

Carroll has pretty poor fixtures here after aswell. I see 2 - 0 Chelsea win,

nah, thats crap man. fling the high balls into Carrol, and hell get on the end of em, CHelsea are in a slump, and newcastle are doing well. Carroll is on fire, by rights he should have had a hatrick in that home game to fulham bar schwarz who was excellent.

Ive sold him and I think it will prove a good decision in the short term.
Chelsea's pairing are suited to a physical challenge which Carroll will impose.

Remember also its Chelsea who will keep alot of the ball and thus keep Newcastles threat to a minimum.

The fact the New are also missig their little passing general Tiote doesnt bode well for Newcastle who are coming over a 5-1 drubbing.

Chelsea have been in poor form but conceeding only 1 shot on target compared to 5 goals is a big difference. Newcastle also have been worse at home sunderland aside and are missing the core of their defence aswell as tiote.

Everything for me points to a Chelsea cleansheet and win with Drogba causes Campbell huge problems.

+1. He is on form but Chelsea hardly have a dodgy defence. Alex and Ivanovic are both beasts in the air which is Carroll's main attribute. I think Newcastle will struggle this game. If City carry on with two strikers which i assume they will now Balotelli is back, then Tevez will get more chances and more support.

I lived in Newcastle for 6 years and we never had snow on the ground for more than 24 hours. It tends to clear pretty quickly - something to do with being close to the sea.

There must be some others trying to weigh up Nani v Elmander for captain.

I still feel a bit wrong even considering captaining a Bolton player but looking at Elmander's previous scores speaks for itself really.

Both are obviously capable players, and if their teams score there is a good chance they will be involved - so in terms of what you can predict i'm just trying to weigh up which game will be more open and lead to more goals.

United at home to 'enemy of football' Allardyce's Blackburn - it's gonan be tight, maybe big sam will even go for 3 CBs again?!

Bolton v Blackpool, at the start of the season i'd have laughed at myself but they're both pretty attacking at the moment and Bolton are scoring for fun.

So, by that logic it has to be Elmander - of course logic is ultimately futile with these things because anything could happen - but is this reasoning sound enough?

What if i say to you that Bolton - Blackpool is derby and it could be 0:1 or 1:2. I personally see surprise here, its time for someone to bring Bolton to the ground.

Hmm, hadn't really thought about it being a derby, fair point. All games involving these two have been pretty open and with lots of goals though, not sure why a derby wouldn't fit that pattern either?

A major disadvantage to knowing too much and thinking about this game has arisen in respect of the Newcastle v Chelsea game this Sunday.

On the balance of probabilites, based on last seasons winter fixtures that were cancelled and the weather forecast for the weekend, the game looks like it is more likely to be off than on, now I know people will disagree, but bear with me.

As a result, I am thinking of Drogba OUT (my only Chelsea player, and my 2 Newcastle players, Krul and Simpson will be benched anyway as it stands) because if the game is indeed called off, he has Everton, Spurs, United and Arsenal in the next 4, so while I have no doubt that he can score in all of these games, I don't see 2 goals and 1 assist type scores, which I believe Carlos Tevez may deliver in at least 2 of his next 5 fixtures.

BUT, analysis paralysis and all that, there will be folk oblivious to this, the casual player, the sheep, whoever, who will be oblivious to the threat of cancellation and who will captain Drogba, and the game goes on, and Drogba tears Newcastle a new one, cricket score, goodnight and goodluck. On the flipside, here's me, having predicted a cancellation, looked at the upcoming fixtures and got Tevez in, and of course, Murphy's law is that Tevez doesn't do aswell as Drogba.

The point of this ramble, is there is no point to my ramble, just sharing my thoughts at the obvious frustrations of too much information/thought on your own FPL team at times, and how, like the snow, it can snow up in your face.

That being said, I am seriously considering Fabregash OUT Lee IN, Drogba OUT Tevez IN for a 4 point hit.

    Ah, vented.

I know the game MIGHT be off (I still doubt it will be) and I'm captaining Drogs

That's what emergency captain is about 😛

I agree with some of your points but this example isn't a good one IMO

I'd do it if I were you. Tevez is in form and Drogba isn't. With strikers scoring goals is far more about confidence. Look at Elmander this year with a big hug and a smile from Coyle compared to last year with Megson's curmudgeonly expression.

Fab to Lee is potentially good, but isn't Lee about to bUgger off in a few weeks to the Asia Cup. Are there better options?

I know what you mean about thinking too much....too much knowledge about injuries etc means that sometimes blind faith takes a back seat. Blind faith would have got me Malouda and Drog in before the season started. Instead too much reading about niggly injuries meant I went for Lamps and Rooney instead. Which turned out to be cr@p beyond belief.

its that lack of sharpness that is the difference between getting a ball into the net rather than into a goalkeepers arms and onto the woodwork. Would Drogba of last season got those in, is the question you need to ask.

BTW - I'm not that down on Drog, I'm keeping him and think he will get back to his best, but I don't know when that will be and for me he is not capt material until then.

my last post got lost in the ether, here it is again:

'[Yesterday], they headed to the indoor pitch at their training headquarters instead, but the Newcastle boss was glad to be back out on the grass today after some hard work by their ground staff.'

As was said earlier, it wont be cancelled due to snow on the pitch, it will be because of safety of supporters, so more of a decision for the club/police than the ref.
