With an injury to Antonio Valencia earlier in the season moving Nani from the left wing to the opposite flank, Sir Alex Ferguson has had the choice of four players to field in the full-back position behind the flying Portugese wide man. Getting that balance to the team just right has proven to be an issue for the United boss, as he’s swapped John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Rafael time and again this season. In the past couple of weeks, though, the displays of the young Brazilian Rafael suggest that Fergie may have found the answer to his selection dilemma.

As the two chalkboards above show, whereas Ji-Sung Park, on the left wing, made just 44% of his passes in the final third -which allows Patrice Evra to push on forward behind him- Nani made 74% of his passes in the same area, which requires not just mobility from United’s right-back to cover the winger’s forages forward, but a defensive discipline to cover at the back.

Rafael possesses a natural ability for the role and has the advantage of youthful dynamism over his rivals for the spot and now, as he picks up experience, seems to be blossoming into a viable first-team option for the league leaders.

As the above Average Position chart against Blackburn shows, there’s not that much difference between Rafael (21) and Evra (3). However, a look at these chalkboards shows how impressive the defensive side of Rafael‘s recent performances have been.

He made fourteen tackles against Blackburn, winning thirteen, whereas on the opposite flank, Evra made seven tackles and won only four of them. Against Wigan the previous week, Evra grabbed the credit and a goal in the 2-0 win, but again Rafael put the shackles on the opposition. He made eight tackles and won seven, whereas Evra made none at all, in a performance that saw Rafael grab an assist and pick up all 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

As this Average Position map shows, Rafael played almost as a winger that day – a role that perhaps he is the most technically adept of all United’s right-backs to fill- allowing plenty width down the United right as Nani (17) continually drifted into the middle,

Despite these impressive displays, the real test is just around the corner for Rafael, with games against Arsenal and Chelsea following this week’s match at Blackpool. Selection for these showdowns will surely be testament to Ferguson’s faith in his ability and, given United’s current form, will make Rafael a real Fantasy prospect, at just £5.6m FPL.

Best short term midfield option outside Nani, Bale, Nasri & Lampard where price isn't a factor.

I think too much is made of players one game from suspension - they only miss one game, and that's what your squad is for. If they are a good proposition, one game won't make that much difference.

It depends on your squad if you only have 1 player on a suspension tightrope then its not a big deal but if you have 4 like I do then it is!

Oh I'm not making them until the last minute. But my reasoning for Torres over Tevez is that all my rivals have Tevez and I'm in desperate need of a differential. I know in my heart that Tevez is the best choice, but I want to have a player that no one else does in order to take full advantage of points that they may gain. Plus Gerrard could be back this weekend.

just this week if id made my transfers already id have saved around 0.3 and possibly made 0.2 on rises come friday but i wouldnt have found out gerrard is maybe back

I like to trade late too. In the early weeks I traded early for the value. The snow changes everything. A few fixtures called off would really shake FPL.

Simple rule for me. Before Xmas then chase value, after Xmas don't.

I've got a value of 106m, but more importantly, a sell on value of 103.9m. The extra millions make a huge difference in the last 3 months of the season

After many comments these pages re; T. Cahill at weekend. I e-mailed FA yesterday to clarify the situation. Reply states the referee saw the incident and as such the FA can take no further action. Sorry not to let people know earlier but was recalled to work. I'm sure this info already knocking about now (stupid 16 hr shifts)

Tevez, Torres and Kolorov are all pretty inconsistent at the moment so could easily get you 2pts. I'd go Nasri, if Arsenal get anything from that game then he will surely get at least some BPs.

          Yeah I know. You're right.

Just look at the first two goals though, they should have been able to defend that with a proper let back.

First goal he got to the ball but didn't manage to get it away, and in the second goal he was supposed to be the one marking Pedro. The first one looked good but they were both silly goals to concede that early.

So did Ashley cole, we can list left backs who played when Messi was not at his best for a while but Marcelo is only 22 and having to play against the world's best player when your team is getting mauled in centre mid is an unenviable task.

First goal I can understand that he was at fault but the second one Pedro was moving with some serious speed and although he was ball watching I'm not sure he would have been able to stop Pedro.

Yeah you have a point there as well, I just REALLY want to make the case that Marcelo is nowhere near enough good enough for Real Madrid after a game that everyone watched!

Mourinho branded the first two goals as bordering to the ridiculous, and then hauled Marcelo off (for the equally poor Arbeloa) when he had enough of him not ever being anywhere near his right position defensively.

He's really good going forward of course.

We should remember that this is a team that found Roberto Carlos to be a good full back of course, and Marcelo might still be as good as him I suppose.

Don't bench Vidic, no way. I would be careful choosing to play only one side especially with attacking defenders. Vidic and Kolorov can score and negate a lack of a clean sheet.

That's the bloody problem with Drogba though.

As a sensible FPL player you always realize that Drogba has the quality come good, but at what stage do you really let go and then buy him back when he finds form?

I've said exactly that for the last 5 weeks or so, and I am keeping him again, but I'm starting to feel like an idiot for doing it.

I think it's likely that the Chelsea game will go ahead so it's more important to grab the minimum 2 points going for Drogs. From my point of view having 2 United, 1 Blackpool and 1 Wigan player is kind of worrying looking at the weather in the north west.

Both good players to have, depends a bit on your strategy imo. Both would do good as a 5th midfielder, but Adam could actually be your fourth midfielder and do well as that too if you wanted to strengthen elsewhere instead.

Barton and foster are the only two i've kept since GW1 and I dont plan on getting rid.

4.5/4.6 for fk taker and corner taker, and as you said happy to bench

For what it is worth, physio room hvae VDV back by the 12th of December. Not sure what this based on but maybe the 4 weeks being banded around is a bit much?

3 Aways and home to Chelsea next four doesn't smack of goal fest time though for me.

Getting rid of VDV, I can afford ANYONE

But there just seems like no-one decent to buy!

Better off getting a cheapo and hope they get the points

        1) I'm not so sure he'll produce the points
        2) I'm an Everton fan - which often clinches the deal if i'm unsure!

I've not got a great defense for this weekend:
Baines, Elmohamady, Hangeland, Cahill and Bosingwa. Who the hell do I play?
