With an injury to Antonio Valencia earlier in the season moving Nani from the left wing to the opposite flank, Sir Alex Ferguson has had the choice of four players to field in the full-back position behind the flying Portugese wide man. Getting that balance to the team just right has proven to be an issue for the United boss, as he’s swapped John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Rafael time and again this season. In the past couple of weeks, though, the displays of the young Brazilian Rafael suggest that Fergie may have found the answer to his selection dilemma.

As the two chalkboards above show, whereas Ji-Sung Park, on the left wing, made just 44% of his passes in the final third -which allows Patrice Evra to push on forward behind him- Nani made 74% of his passes in the same area, which requires not just mobility from United’s right-back to cover the winger’s forages forward, but a defensive discipline to cover at the back.

Rafael possesses a natural ability for the role and has the advantage of youthful dynamism over his rivals for the spot and now, as he picks up experience, seems to be blossoming into a viable first-team option for the league leaders.

As the above Average Position chart against Blackburn shows, there’s not that much difference between Rafael (21) and Evra (3). However, a look at these chalkboards shows how impressive the defensive side of Rafael‘s recent performances have been.

He made fourteen tackles against Blackburn, winning thirteen, whereas on the opposite flank, Evra made seven tackles and won only four of them. Against Wigan the previous week, Evra grabbed the credit and a goal in the 2-0 win, but again Rafael put the shackles on the opposition. He made eight tackles and won seven, whereas Evra made none at all, in a performance that saw Rafael grab an assist and pick up all 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

As this Average Position map shows, Rafael played almost as a winger that day – a role that perhaps he is the most technically adept of all United’s right-backs to fill- allowing plenty width down the United right as Nani (17) continually drifted into the middle,

Despite these impressive displays, the real test is just around the corner for Rafael, with games against Arsenal and Chelsea following this week’s match at Blackpool. Selection for these showdowns will surely be testament to Ferguson’s faith in his ability and, given United’s current form, will make Rafael a real Fantasy prospect, at just £5.6m FPL.

Jelly Van Damme was a bit of a fantasy darling at the start of the season (along with The Mummy)....how quickly things change!

Early on, I think. Can't see there being many interesting transfers happening, so I'm looking forward to reshaping my team properly.

Might take a 4-8 hit this week to get a good team for Dec and limp through to the wildcard.

What is a good team for dec though? Usually i'll try and show horn in as many Utd, Chelsea and Arse players as possible but considering they all play each other, is Citeh and the mid table teams the way to go until WC2?

My plan had included a couple of Blackburn players and Tevez. But with him being on 4 yellows and Blackburn...well you know what happened...I'm not so sure. Though I do still like their fixtures and think this could be a good kick up their collective Big-Sam-sized ass.

Basically trying to win a Manager of the Month award in my paid minileague, as I'm 80 points off the leader and not looking good for an overall win.

I'm sure u already no but if u go by the monthly leagues the game produces, any hits u take before the month starts don't count to the up coming months total, ie this week won't count as a hit towards December.

if Terry is back, I can see Elmander (scored all but two of his goals away i believe) and Piquionne outscoring Cahill maybe - with the sland defense having a new core.

Is the programme really going to make a difference? Everyone knows how corrupt FIFA is. Jack Warner has been involved in bigger corruption scandals, yet he's now vice-president.

The Sunday Times and the BBC already have made a difference - 3 resignations, and counting. Increased transparency and an audit procedure to be instituted ...

I did think that. Isn't it already widely known that Jack Warner is as corrupt as they come? But the most interesting thing in that whole program was the conditions FIFA have for the hosting country. If that's the terms then they can go host it somewhere else. Bunch of corrupt thieving cocks.

It wasn't widely known or publicised because it has to be kept secret if you want to have a chance of hosting. It was leaked by the Dutch who didn't seem quite as willing to play ball, and the BBC did report it back in May, but I don't remember it being widely reported. I say well done to Panorama. Seriously I don't want a thing to do with FIFA until they are more transparent and get rid of the corruption. You think with finances as they are in this country we should pay millions to make sure the infrastructure and policing is in place, forgo any revenue, and grease the palms of this bunch of idiots just so I can go and see a world cup match close to my house?

I wonder if the goal line technology companies weren't willing to pay the right amount of bribes to get Blatter to look into implementing them.

The whole thing stinks and The Sunday Times and the BBC should be applauded, not derided.

Whats the deal with Sunderland’s strikers? Looking to ship Drogba out for a cheaper option, and the Black Cats have a nice set of fixtures but who’s nailed on to start? Bent’s only just back, Gyan is (or rather was, until being dropped) in good form and the cracking prospect Welbeck is on fire. Bent the safest bet and least likely to be rotated?

Ah yessers, just looked at BB's fixtures, and MGP has improved considerably since Barton gave him a friendly shove - much like I used to do with the old TV in our student house in days of yore. Nice shout.

Its been an enforced break as I just moved house and it took an ungodly amount of time for vodafone to reconnect me. The last few weeks, well lets not mention them. Dont even look Greg, especially not at captain choices. Let us all move on in a spirit of amity and co-operation.

Ouch indeed. I woke up thinking, 'hmm VdV is out injured - its about time Arteta earned his crust'. What a stupid twonk. This season is nowt but a lottery, ach well at least I get to try out Black Ops online 🙂

Elmo hadn't really been doing much -0 goals and I think 1 assist. Not great returns for a wide midfielder.

Couple of inches of snow where I am, day off school (Not that it is shut), brilliant, just got home from an entire morning of snowball fights, and well the occasional snowball at a passing car. I live about half hour away from West Ham, not that It matters this week. But still. London games could be in trouble.

They say things always go in 3's. With two FFS midfield favourites having been injured in quick succession (Fabs n VDV) who do we think will get injured in the Carling Cup tonight? Nani? Nasri maybe? Or my personal prediction...N'Zogbia?

Yep, I also have all three of them (and had VDV and Fabs). I've just got a bad feeling about NZog - surely Wigan will play a full strength side against Arsenal in a quarter final. Don't think Nani will play but not sure about Nasri.

good day all, posted this early in the morning when few were around to respond (not thats its important to anyone else), hoping for an opinion:

    Robinson

    Cole, konchesky, Dann

    Nani (C), Malouda, Cahill, Brunt

    Drogba, Elmander, Carroll

    Subs: Simpson, Coleman, VDV

Havent used a transfer yet, was wondering if this XI was safe enough to trot out there with very little upside on the bench. Assuming no posteponements naturally.

Any reason why everyone seems to be plumping for Nasri to replace VdV? Arsenal have United and Chelsea in their next 4 and a poor record against the big teams. Nasri's in good form but I dont see him as fixture proof as VdV is.
