Victor Obinna scored a belated first Premier League goal at the weekend in the 3-1 win over Wigan and last night used his newfound confidence to tear into a fledgling United defence. The on-loan Nigerian provided 3 assists in a stunning 4-0 Carling Cup win and was a menace to the shell-shocked back four all evening.

Elsewhere, the Gunners had a far more routine passage to the Carling Cup last four, disposes of Wigan by a two goal margin at the Emirates…

Avram Grant was forced into a significant change in the West Ham midfield with Scott Parker missing out with further complications with his chest infection that almost saw him miss Saturday’s game. Jonathan Spector came into an unfamiliar midfield role and duly claimed two goals against his former club. Julien Faubert and Tal Ben Haim replaced the cup-tied Lars Jacobsen and Danny Gabbidon in the full-back roles. Radoslav Kovac and Luis Boa Morte came in for Valon Behrami and Junior Stanislas in midfield, while Carlton Cole was given the nod ahead of the rested Frederic Piquionne.

Avram Grant admitted after the game that Parker will come back into his eleven for the trip to Sunderland with last night’s hero Spector likely to make way. Up front Grant has a headache however, with Carlton Cole impressing alongside Obinna with his own brace of goals. Grant had this to say on Cole’s performance…

“He was brilliant today. From the first moment he worked very hard, caused a lot of problems and scored goals…It was the first time he did that for us and he was hungry to show he can do better. Every player sometimes has bad times but we have to wait and judge at the end of the season, not after 15 games.”

The Hammers will certainly go to the Stadium of Light with confidence following convincing back-to-back wins and, although they face three away games in four (sun MCY bla ful), their low-to-mid price assets may well be worth consideration off the back of this marked improvement. A front three of Cole, Piquionne and Obinna looks likely and that trio will take form and confidence into a game against an injury-hit Sunderland back four who conceded three goals to Wolves last time out. Interesting.

United meanwhile will be looking to forget last night’s showing. Alex Ferguson made no less than ten changes to the lineup that demolished Blackburn Rovers – only Anderson kept his starting role in a midfield that also boasted Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher, making returns from recent injuries. They provided the experience in an otherwise youthful United side which were simply brushed aside by a more physical and organised West Ham outfit on the night.

Ferguson was quick to point to defensive frailties for the reason behind the defeat..

“The goals we conceded were poor, and some of our players were too young to carry those mistakes and still win the match.”

Few of the United starting lineup seem likely to threaten the teamsheet for the trip to Blackpool – the midfield trio of Anderson, Giggs and Fletcher will all be pushing for inclusion but it would seem that Carrick and Scholes (if fit), along with Park and Nani will be the likely four given the nod.

Arsenal’s routine 2-0 victory over Wigan in the other tie saw Nicklas Bendtner stake his claim with a strike to seal the win following an Antolin Alcaraz own goal. Despite that statement from Bendtner, it was Robin Van Persie’s return to a starting role that drew the headlines. He began up front in a side that showed a total of nine changes in all – only Jack Wilshere and Laurent Koscielny kept their starts from the victory at Villa Park.

Van Persie completed 70 minutes before being subbed and, despite the run-out, Wenger was still adamant that the Dutchman remained short of his full match sharpness in his post-match debrief…

“He has shown class. He still needs games, he was out for a long time but it’s already positive that he could play 70 minutes tonight. Let’s hope he has no reaction then he will become stronger and stronger.”

Van Persie is set to resume bench duty at home to Fulham this weekend then and perhaps only Koscielny and Wilshere will get near the starting XI for that match. The likes of Theo Walcott, Denilson and Bendtner seem set to find themselves kept in reserve once again.

Wigan’s defeat was compounded by the loss of the lively Victor Moses to a dislocated shoulder, with boss Roberto Martinez confirming the injury in his post-match comments…

“Victor fell very awkwardly and straightaway you could see that he had dislocated his shoulder. We sent him straight to hospital, and we’ll continue to assess him. Unfortunately we are looking at anything between four to six weeks.”

Mauro Boselli also picked up a knock according to Martinez – he’ll now be a doubt for the weekend. A bitter blow for Fantasy Managers far and wide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    First post?Sweet 🙂

    Team for this weekend:
    Hart
    Kolarov-A.Cole-Samba
    Nasri-Nzogbia-Bale-Nani(C)
    Elmander-Carroll-Drogba
    Bench:Foster Baines Foley Albrighton

    Things that I need opinion:
1- Which one to bench?Baines,Nzogbia or Elmander?
2- Is it fine to play two MCY defenders?(Hart and Kolarov)
3- Is it Nani the best captain option?

Any other opinion on my team is highly appreciated.
P/S: I would like to see TM’s aka MoreTragicsᴹᵀ ‘s comment 🙂 Thanks before 🙂

It's tough to say, the stadiums is one thing but if the snow is affecting the road/rail networks any of the games could get postponed.

Blackpool, as far as I know, is the only ground in the Prem without undersoil so looks most likely to get can'd. Although I have no clue how the snow is falling in Lancashire.

Heard Danny Wilson taking Carrgher's place for Carling Cup game. Wonder if this is just an experiment by Woy or if he has a chance of competing with Kyriakos for EPL time. (both ex-Rangers funnily enough)

I want to bring in Kyriakos but have slight doubt now.

Kyrgi is a sure starter now when Carra is out.

Agger has been out for a long time, and will not be ready for a while. There are rumours that Roy wants to get rid of him.

Kyrgi is even more important when Gerrard is on the field, Kyrgi is then a big goal threat. Meireles and co are not near Gerrerds serves.

Cheers Molby. Reassuring. Sounds like Carragher only out for about 3 weeks I think but Kyriakos like you say has potential for some good scores. He made a lot of mistakes at the back when at Rangers but seems to have improved in that area too. Always a strong goal threat from set pieces.

Suppose only question is, is it worth a transfer if he'll only be in for a few weeks.

So do we think it would be mental to get rid of Elmander? The lure of Bent is quite big with his fixtures and consistency. Elmander could have had his purple patch now. I'm probably gonna keep Carroll whatever, I'm giving Drogba one more week and then swapping to Tevez if I get no joy and the front 3 of the following looks really good for a while.

It's seems mad with Elmanders form but sometimes people can wait till someones gone completely off the boil before getting rid and losing out on someone else scoring big. Hardly anyone in my mini leagues has Elmander too so if he does do well I'm not losing too much, and I'll have made a tidy profit from him too.

If value is a factor in your thinking - even if you bought him for 7.5 and so lost 0.5 selling him now, most likely his price will fall to about 8.2 - 8.3 by the time he returns from injury, so its not going to cost you that much more to get him back later.

How so? It would be an absolutely massive injection of money here even through the costs of policing and ticketing and infrastructure etc. which would stimulate the economy massively.

Then all the money that would be brought in through the tourism industry etc. would more than pay for that.

How is any of that bad for the economy?

The Dutch Fa plan to spend far less and have insisted if they were to host the world cup it would be a loss.

Most international tournaments are at a loss to an economy. The major companies make profits.

So while me and MNL are dealing with facts re: economy you are just giving an opinion.

You obviously don't have a great grasp of economics do you?

The uk government could run a loss while boosting the economy significantly. Money they spend is money that is getting injected into our economy, and a massive amount of it is coming from abroad. Whether the government covers its' costs or not, it's still a massive boost for the economy - it's an undeniable fact

Some businesses will do well from increased trade and exposure. But FIFA's tax breaks, plus as you say the cost of infrastructure improvements of which the majority will come out of the public purse, means that the average person would be worse off.

Unless some of the companies who profit from the tourism are thinking of giving all their profits back to fill up the kitty of course. That might happen.

Ermmm, if you look at the country's gdp and economic growth through this year you'll see a massive spike that coincides very closely with when the world cup was.

Why? People were spending on TVs and booze etc.

If we were hosting it that would increase exponentially and our economy would be buzzing, that is arguably much more important than running without a loss if you are able to look beyond what you're saying.

What i'm saying is that the government loss will be acceptable when you measure it against the amount of money injected into our economy.

Seriously? The amount of work that has to be done would be huge, contracts would be taken out, lots of companies would need to employ more people because of it, we'd pay more tax, we'd use less benefits, companies would pay more tax.

We could go all day long, i don't really care if you agree or not - but you're wrong

"It is estimated the event will boost the UK economy by £3bn, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has said."

Also, any spending to improve infrastructure has obvious benefits that last beyond the world cup itself. Some of those improvements will be coupled with the olympics which we are already hosting anyway, which would brign down costs. eg. tube improvements

                    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11837833

Which if you read the article you get to:

"Professor Stefan Szymanski, from the Cass Business School, part of City University in London, is more sceptical about the impact the World Cup might have on the economy, which he described as "negligible"."

                    haha, you got me there.

                    selective quoting yes.

But even in that arguable it argues that the net effect on the economy would either be nil or a massive boost. Nowhere mentions that it could be BAD for the economy.

I'm sure if I looked I could find an article or expert saying it would be bad, or that any gdp spikes during the World Cup would be cancelled out during the periods before or after. But this is already getting pretty dull...agree to disagree.

Welcome to the real world i'm afraid. I do alot of things that probably have indirect moral repurcussions. I wear clothes that were probably made in sweatshops, i drink coca cola, i eat meat, etc.

I recognise i would be a massive hypocrite to do any of that and stand here calling someone's morals out because they want to host a world cup despite the organising body being slightly corrupt.

Liek i said, does this now mean you'll never watch a world cup again? If the answer isn't yes then get off your high horse!

                There are other regional bodies.

The World Cup would be great as an experience for anyone in that country (assuming they like or tolerate football, obviously). But I just can't agree that it's good for the economy. In 10 years time, we won't be sitting here saying 'thank god we had that World Cup'.

The "more entertaining" part is the main argument for me, it would be a once in a lifetime experience for you lot on here to be in England during a world cup. Streets would be buzzing, and maybe you could get tickets to a game if lucky.

The same can be said of every country Garg. Which is besides the point.
The main issue for me is everyone pandering to the corrupt Fifa.

Yeah but you can't fend that argument off as irrelevant, it is the main argument for most people to want the world cup at all.

Of course it is the same for every country, but most posters on here live in England.

Blah, I hate being proud. Pride has never done mankind anything good.

I've not really followed the English World Cup bid saga so this is not my discussion. I would not want Sweden to get it if it was in an ugly way tbh.

I'm a bit apathetic about the whole thing. It's absolutly out of our control whether there's corruption inside FIFA or not. I find the timing of the Panorama documentary quite cynical although also respect it was an issue that needed to be addressed and respect that as far as the BBC are concerned it was perfect timing.

The fact is we've presented the best case possible to FIFA and got the top men in the country behind the bid, what more can you do?

I just find the Eng bid so weak (not on the actual bid) but on whole not talking about the corruption issues.

Fair play to the Dutch for publishing the documents re all the Tax and Laws Fifas insists the goverment must break if they want the world cup.

I just think its a disgrace to be honest.

On the football issue I think Russia should get it or Australia. Probably Russia as they are a huge country with a massive base of fans and England has had it before.

well i go to ashton gate every week, weve got the stand behind the goal right next to the away fans where around 1000 go in every week and are allowed to stand all game and its a good atmosphere and a laugh

although windass goal in the playoff final a few years ago was gutting i do sometimes think im quite happy in the championship, if we got to the prem wed get all the plastic fans along

I actually read an article in The Times a few weeks back by a Leeds fan saying the exact same thing. He said although he missed the high times he much prefers being down in the lower leagues. He found that you get to enjoy the whole football atmosphere more and that the banter is way better as you become more personal with the fans around ya as it's more or less the same groups every week.

On the contrary, I would love to experience the joy of being able to watch world class football in the country I live in. If England don’t get the 2018 tournament, then by the next realistic date England could host the tournament, I will be pushing 50. It would be an altogether different experience watching at that age – assuming, that is, that England actually gets awarded a tournament in my lifetime.

But if not getting the tournament means this country’s press remains free to investigate wrongdoing at an organisation seeming beyond normal jurisdiction, and that this results in corruption being swept out of the beautiful game – giving us a clean FIFA – then that, to me, is far more important than winning the vote. It would be a price well worth paying.

Guys, would appreciate any advice you could give me on my team for this weekend:

    Foster (Jaaskelinen)
    Jones Vidic Kolorov Dann Simpson
    Nasri Nani N'Zogbia VDV Arteta
    Carroll Elmander Drogba

I know that I need to get rid of Arteta and VDV and was thinking about bringing in MGP for one of them, who else do you think I can bring in? Is it worth doubling up on another Arsenal midfielder? Anyone think if its worth getting rid of one midfielder this week and the other next week to avoid a 4 point hit? Cheers!

i recommend avoiding the 4pt hit, but if you look at my team this is a comment of irony seeing i have a heap of trades to my name, but it's cost me big time! - being a first year novice i'm begining to learn my lesson..

but yeah, VDV to MGP would be a good move IMO.

Save Arteta for later, see how the Chelsea midfield go against Everton with Essien coming back into the picture - that's what I'm doing.

cheers, yeah thats what i was thinking, i couldnt see the logic in the 4 point hit because i couldnt find a player that i really wanted specifically for this gameweek! yeah u've built a top team but taken many point hits, sometimes they're only really worth it if a player is injured, but its still risky taking more than 4 or 8.

In defence of Torres, he has been given next to no service this season. I wonder how he would fare if he were leading the United attack, alongside Nani and possibly Rooney? Or Arsenal's attack, with Fabregas, Nani, Arshavin and Rosicky supplying him with the sort of chances Nicklas Bendtner usually squanders?

Give the guy a break - he is probably still the best striker in the country. And when Gerrard and Joke Hole return, he may start to show it again.

Ive got enough leftover fabs cash to bring in gerrard for VDV, with .1 leftover. The fixtures look decent but it would delay some other moves I want to make and would mean giving up on fabs till the new year, where Lpools fixture run ends and the WC comes into play. You lads like gerrard at 11.2?

    Team would be

    Robinson (Al-Habsi)

    Cole, Konchesky, Dann, Coleman, Simpson

    Gerrard, Malouda, Nani, Cahill, Brunt

    Drogba, Elmander, Carroll
