Victor Obinna scored a belated first Premier League goal at the weekend in the 3-1 win over Wigan and last night used his newfound confidence to tear into a fledgling United defence. The on-loan Nigerian provided 3 assists in a stunning 4-0 Carling Cup win and was a menace to the shell-shocked back four all evening.

Elsewhere, the Gunners had a far more routine passage to the Carling Cup last four, disposes of Wigan by a two goal margin at the Emirates…

Avram Grant was forced into a significant change in the West Ham midfield with Scott Parker missing out with further complications with his chest infection that almost saw him miss Saturday’s game. Jonathan Spector came into an unfamiliar midfield role and duly claimed two goals against his former club. Julien Faubert and Tal Ben Haim replaced the cup-tied Lars Jacobsen and Danny Gabbidon in the full-back roles. Radoslav Kovac and Luis Boa Morte came in for Valon Behrami and Junior Stanislas in midfield, while Carlton Cole was given the nod ahead of the rested Frederic Piquionne.

Avram Grant admitted after the game that Parker will come back into his eleven for the trip to Sunderland with last night’s hero Spector likely to make way. Up front Grant has a headache however, with Carlton Cole impressing alongside Obinna with his own brace of goals. Grant had this to say on Cole’s performance…

“He was brilliant today. From the first moment he worked very hard, caused a lot of problems and scored goals…It was the first time he did that for us and he was hungry to show he can do better. Every player sometimes has bad times but we have to wait and judge at the end of the season, not after 15 games.”

The Hammers will certainly go to the Stadium of Light with confidence following convincing back-to-back wins and, although they face three away games in four (sun MCY bla ful), their low-to-mid price assets may well be worth consideration off the back of this marked improvement. A front three of Cole, Piquionne and Obinna looks likely and that trio will take form and confidence into a game against an injury-hit Sunderland back four who conceded three goals to Wolves last time out. Interesting.

United meanwhile will be looking to forget last night’s showing. Alex Ferguson made no less than ten changes to the lineup that demolished Blackburn Rovers – only Anderson kept his starting role in a midfield that also boasted Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher, making returns from recent injuries. They provided the experience in an otherwise youthful United side which were simply brushed aside by a more physical and organised West Ham outfit on the night.

Ferguson was quick to point to defensive frailties for the reason behind the defeat..

“The goals we conceded were poor, and some of our players were too young to carry those mistakes and still win the match.”

Few of the United starting lineup seem likely to threaten the teamsheet for the trip to Blackpool – the midfield trio of Anderson, Giggs and Fletcher will all be pushing for inclusion but it would seem that Carrick and Scholes (if fit), along with Park and Nani will be the likely four given the nod.

Arsenal’s routine 2-0 victory over Wigan in the other tie saw Nicklas Bendtner stake his claim with a strike to seal the win following an Antolin Alcaraz own goal. Despite that statement from Bendtner, it was Robin Van Persie’s return to a starting role that drew the headlines. He began up front in a side that showed a total of nine changes in all – only Jack Wilshere and Laurent Koscielny kept their starts from the victory at Villa Park.

Van Persie completed 70 minutes before being subbed and, despite the run-out, Wenger was still adamant that the Dutchman remained short of his full match sharpness in his post-match debrief

“He has shown class. He still needs games, he was out for a long time but it’s already positive that he could play 70 minutes tonight. Let’s hope he has no reaction then he will become stronger and stronger.”

Van Persie is set to resume bench duty at home to Fulham this weekend then and perhaps only Koscielny and Wilshere will get near the starting XI for that match. The likes of Theo Walcott, Denilson and Bendtner seem set to find themselves kept in reserve once again.

Wigan’s defeat was compounded by the loss of the lively Victor Moses to a dislocated shoulder, with boss Roberto Martinez confirming the injury in his post-match comments

“Victor fell very awkwardly and straightaway you could see that he had dislocated his shoulder. We sent him straight to hospital, and we’ll continue to assess him. Unfortunately we are looking at anything between four to six weeks.”

Mauro Boselli also picked up a knock according to Martinez – he’ll now be a doubt for the weekend. A bitter blow for Fantasy Managers far and wide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Goal scoring form? Wow didn't think you'd bring that one up.

"rooney and torres are much better options than drogba atm."

And what is Rooney's goal scoring form like then? Has he even scored a goal this season that wasn't a penalty? And Torres, did you watch the Spurs game? The guy is a liability!

Torres had 3 easy oppurtunities to score, and on another day could've got a hat trick
I'd rather that than drogba, who relies on only power to score his goals.

Rooney provided 2 assissts on his comeback to the team.
In total he recieved 8 points which is the same as drogba in his last 4 games.

Drogba doesn't have any excuses, rooney does. And he still in better form than drogba

Yes he will start on Saturday and will almost certainly be more advanced than Pedersen (did you see him trying to play centre midfield against United? He just doesn't have the engine to be chasing the likes of Anderson around the pitch!) As for set pieces he will be on penalties that is for sure and may take the odd corner/free kick but Pedersen will still take the majority

I agree with SD (unfortunately about Torres too) u can't ignore the malaria thing with Drogba, u can discount his last few weeks for that. He's still getting chances and the goals will come and I'd bet a lot that that will be this weekend.

People have said that for the last 3 weeks running. It's getting ridiculous.

The argument in the first place was whether drogba is a better option than rooney and torres for fpl.

I'm not even talking about him as a player.

I'm talking purely on fpl potential.

Rooney and torres will get more points than drogba over the coming weeks.

                  Fact.

You can bookmark this page if you want.

Drogba won't score this weekend but both rooney and torress will.

much better options than ferguson i'd say.

Do mummy to jones defo and then ferguson to a better midfielder depending on how much you have to spend.

You need tottenham coverage as they are one of the highest scorers in the premiership.

thank you! Ferguson is normally on the bench leaving a front 7 of:
        Nasri Adam Cahill Nani
        Rooney Torres Tevez
If i do upgrade Ferguson.. i would have the dilemma of benching one of the front 8 every week.. and choosing the probable lowest scoring attacker out of the front 8 is a mean task. I would rather have the strongest possible 11.. Just my 2p worth opinion. Thanks a alot though!

So it has worked for me.. Not saying my front 7 has always conjured up wonders.. but the point of the cheapest possible midfielder in my opinion, is to give you the chance of playing the most valuable front 7 possible, and it has worked for me up till now.

I think the cheapest best midfielder option is Tom Cleverley

              1. 3 games in the team on the bounce (wouldv'e been 5 but ineligible against Man Utd(parent club) and Arsenal (cup tied)

              2. Man Utd have already spoke of the possibililty of bringing him back in Jan and gving him a run in the team, 4.2m attacking midfielder, playing for Man Utd, wet dream!

              3. His stats for watford last year we're mightily impressive: 11 goals in 33 games plus a load of assists.

              4. just scored in the premier league for watford and appears to be taking his chance in the team well

Anyone remember last year that weekend when virtually all matches bar the Man City one were off? Was that game at Eastlands?
If so it gives a good indication that Man City may be one of the safest teams to invest in this weekend.
I'm hoping Tevez does for me this weekend what he did that weekend (34pts in captain)

Either way i suppose waiting and see what the deal is on saturday morning is wise. Probably worth captaining somebody who plays on the saturday too, once you know that game is going ahead.

If United game happens to be cancelled (looking like most likely to be at this early stage), I will have Rooney(C)/Nani/Vidic/Adam OUT as well as VDV and Albrighton OUT.

Having done Drogba OUT Rooney IN on Sunday, I have used my freebie (it was one of those "I feel better about my team now that Drogba is gone and I can put the (C) on Rooney") so do folk think it is worth maybe an 8 point hit to replace VDV and Albrighton?

    (a) VDV OUT MGP IN and Albrighton OUT N'Zogbia IN
    (b) VDV OUT MGP IN
    (c) ALbrighton OUT MGP IN, or
    (d) do nothing further

    a, b, c or d?

    Cheers

just wait. the forecast is not too bad for the weekend. The bbc is going ape about it because lots of BBC staff are effected as theycommute from the home counties. Hidden in the chaos stories are little things like ...."roads beginning to clear'....west of england unaffected....etc...

Sorry mate, I don't give advice to people who are beating me. Which basically makes me entirely useless here... I suppose I could help Fran or SammyC. 😉

What's the plan with all the money in the bank then? If you go ahead with a) then you'll have over 10 million in the bank!

I'm a sucker for transfers, so I personally would go for A. VDV obviously has to go, and MGP + N'Zogbia both have cracking fixtures this week. You may as well make the changes this week. Considering even after the changes you, like many people with all the postponements, probably won't be able to field 11 players, you only need N'Zogbia and MGP to get 8 points between them to make the transfers worthwhile.. And you'd back them to do so.

Good advice JP, will be looking to updrage Piquionne next week now, maybe Torres or Tevez, will see. Think this might be a good week to clean out team of injuries, at least where it appears Albrighton and VDV will at least miss the next 3-4 games.

He might, but I think Brunt is a better option long term. Odem just hasn't performed well in so long. I spose he is due to score, but then again so are a bunch of forwards. I'd like to play Wellbeck just as a differential. My captaining has been crap and instead of playing the go-to big guns all the time and waiting, might as well play someone who's in form.

Reviewing the current FPL situation, I have a feeling that for the first time as long as I can recall, using your whole budget is not necessary.

With only Tevez scoring of the big forwards, and none of the midfield warhammers doing any serious goal mouth bashing, why not have a little sumfink in the bank, to easily fit a player like Fatty or El Nina into your squad with one simple transfer?

    Opinions?

Is Begovic the ideal replacement for Hahnemann? I can bring in Robinson, but it would mean taking a hit to replace Coleman with another cheapie.

It all depends on who your other keeper is, and how well Begovic's fixtures alternate with your current keeper.

I said that when I put the (c) on Arteta. It felt wonderful, then THAT happened. My life has never been the same since.

What's ridiculous is Arteta (c) wasn't a bad call. I've been more than happy with my team before each of the last 4 gws and have just about limped over the 40 point line by the end of it. Stupid frickin' luck filled nonsense game this is!

When is this season going to sort itself out?

I've been playing this game for 4 or 5 years now, but this is the first time I've used this site. I've never planned transfers, looked at rotations, fixtures etc, always just picked a couple of form players every friday night and stuck them in my team, and have generally done ok (top 100k).

This season I've been trying harder, but doing worse than others in my minileagues who are clearly not putting any thought into it at all.

Is anyone else finding this? Is it all going to come good in the second half of the season?

Very difficult one there, I'd go with Taylor, Konchesky and one of Caroll/Bale. Its a pitty because both are decent options this week.

This season is absolutely mental. It's one of the portents of the apocalypse:
'And lo when the tangerine smashes the magpie in its nest, and when boing is heard in the emirates then the whore of Babylon will arise in the west. Rivers will turn to blood, and Nani will be good'

Lol. You definitely know something's not right when Nani's essential.

That's the kind reassurance I was after, The Rock. Thanks! My obsessive thought and planning has to pay off eventually.

Hi Rock, hanging in there - waiting for news on the snow. Luckily don't have VDV/Arteta/Fab

Need to get rid of Elmo/Mummy this week.

Hope BP vs ManU happens and that Adam comes good.

Blackpool - utd game would be most at risk but we just need to wait and see. i have Arteta/VDV so one, if not both will be going, have my eyes on MGP/N'Zogbia.

Who you planning on bringing in for Elmo? you seem to have a nice bit of cash in your bank, what about a Utd or a city defender?
