Gerard Houllier returns to Anfield and watches on while his Villa side are swept aside by a ruthlessly efficient Liverpool display. Here’s the notes on the final encounter of the Gameweek…

Roy Hodgson put out a predictable Liverpool lineup, with one major exception, Fernando Torres was given compassionate leave after his wife went into labour, so Ryan Babel was handed the opportunity to partner David Ngog in attack. At the beginning of the evening then, Liverpool fans would have questioned whether they would have the cutting edge to see off Villa; as it turned out Babel and Ngog were to combine to great effect.

While Babel’s smartly taken goal is unlikely to see him retain a starting role, Ngog looks a better prospect. His opener, coupled with the assist for Maxi’s third, was rewarded with the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points and, at just 4.8, in that game, it might well be enough for him to start earning some attention. Ngog has started the last 3 matches under Hodgson and could well be alongside the returning Torres against at Newcastle this weekend.

The return of Steven Gerrard is of course the major caveat to Ngog’s potential as a budget signing. The Liverpool skipper may well be in the frame for the trip to St James’ Park and with Joe Cole also a factor, Ngog’s starting role is far from secure.

Liverpool kept a second clean sheet in 3 league games and have now kept 4 in their last 7, conceding just 5 goals in that run. Clearly there are shoots of progress in this area then, and with fixtures continuing to smile on Hodgson’s men, a move for either Sotirios Kyrgiakos or Paul Konchesky, looks a wise investment. Kyrgiakos was subbed late on but there no apparent injury sustained. We will of course monitor that situation going into the weekend in case there was a complication for the Greek.

The form of Maxi Rodriquez is also worth noting. At 6.7 in the FPL, Rodriguez has returned 3 goals in his last 7 league starts, throwing in 3 Bonus Points along the way. He and Raul Meireles, who was again impressive, have prospered in the Liverpool midfield in the absence of Gerrard, offering mid-price prospects for those looking to buy into Liverpool’s attacking potential lower down the price bracket.

Villa were bitterly disappointing and the Gerard Houllier dissenters are now swelling in numbers. The Villa bos was able to call on Marc Alrighton in the absence of the suspended Ashley Young, after he made a speedy return from an appendicitis, but his trickery had little bearing on a match that passed by the visitors within 16 minutes following the two goal salvo from Ngog and Babel.

Villa’s Fantasy prospects look pretty grim. They’ve now shipped 14 goals in their last 6 league matches without a clean sheet, and while they’ve found the next 8 times in that run, they are clearly struggling for stability and fluidity in their lineup. Albrighton, as a 4.6 option in midfield, looks the only prospect worthy of consideration. While Ashley Young will return from his ban to face West Brom at the weekend, Houllier will be without Ciaran Clark who picked up his fifth booking in last night’s game.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Neither, I'm staying well away from the Pool midfield. It's a combination of Torres + Konc/Skrt/Kyr for me.

who would you buy from these defenders? (pick 2 if you want, but please rank them):

    Onuoha
Bardsley (is not really a regular if all players are fit?!)
    Mensah
    Samba
    Nelson
    Jones

Bardsley has started every game since GW6 and looks first choice even when everyone is fit.

I have Bardsley but with their injuries i would go for a Blackburn defender - not much between them but Jones for me on price.

My line up for this week:
    Hart
    Baines,A.Cole,Samba
    Nasri,Nani,N'zogbia,Bale
    Elmander,Drogba,Carroll

    Bench: Foster,Albrighton,Foley,Kolarov

    Things that I need opinion:
    1- Should I play Albrighton?
2- Who to bench if I play Albrighton?
3- Should I transfer out Albrighton and who to bring in if I transfer out Albrighton?Etherington or MGP?
    4- Who to captain?

    Thanks,

Looking at last night's game Kyrigakos may well be the better option in the short term as at every set piece he looked like he could score a goal whereas knoch barely made any forward movement.

Samba and Onuoha difficult I would maybe just give the edge to samba on fixtures and his goal threat?

Lots are consdering it, it's been discussed in great depth here.

I'm don't like the idea. Out/back in tranfers rarely pay off as there's always more pressing transfers when you want to bring them back in. Ultimately, you've got to be happy with the rest of your team for 2 weeks or take points.

And hope that your team isn't affected by red cards, injuries or birthing partners in the meantime. It's not worth it.

The flipside is if the player you bring in does a Berbatov and scores 5 out of the blue. Will you want to sell him then?!

Chelsea have some nice fixtures after GW19, which is when I'd consider bringing Lampard in.

Loads of talk about konch and Kyrgiakos but Skrtel is the man! Goals, bonus and assists in last couple of weeks! He was the best def on the park last night.

Not sure whether to use a tfr this week? Any advice much appreciated.....only idea was Malouda to a Spurs player

spurs have some horrible fixtures ahead but they generally up their game against the big boys. on the rumour mill is vdv should be fit for the weekends fixture. on here they were tipping lennon as he's only 7.5m and coming b ack to form.

        -1

I think Spurs have nice fixtures even with DVD injured. CHEL/bp/villa/NEW/FUL looks decent to me. I can see spurs scoring in every single one of those games.
