Chelsea’s slide continues as they suffer a late defeat in Marseille, while at the Emirates a nervy 3-1 win is enough for a subdued Arsenal to progress, but only as group runners-up, paving the way for a potential meeting with Spain’s big boys.

Elsewhere, there’s news on the fitness of Steven Gerrard and Michael Dawson, while, in between ice baths, Rio Ferdinand’s been busy on Twitter again…

Those clinging to Chelsea’s Fantasy assets could find little to comfort them from the 1-0 defeat in Marseille. On an emotional night for Didier Drogba, he failed to show a glimmer of renewed form or confidence and his current malaise typifies Chelsea as a whole right now.

Although already through to the last 16 prior to the game, Carlo Ancelotti’s concern on his side’s current slide will deepen further after last night’s performance. Although denied a couple of penalty appeals, Chelsea were in the main, second best to their French opponents.

“The performance was not so bad defensively where we had a good control of the game but we could do better up front. We had a lot of opportunities to do counter attack but we didn’t do so well with the final pass or the final shot.”

The lack of attacking prowess is a worry for Ancelotti given the strength of his lineup last night. Nicolhas Anelka and Ashley Cole were rested but the likes of Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda and Micheal Essien all started, along with Drogba. Elsewhere Josh McEachran came into the midfield with John Mikel Obi rested with a Champions League suspension looming.

Mikel will return to the lineup for the visit to Spurs this weekend and Ancelotti remains hopeful that Frank Lampard will join him in midfield. Jose Bosingwa is out of the weekend clash however – he limped off with a hamstring injury and has already been ruled out by Ancelotti. That will mean Paulo Ferreira, who started at left-back last night, will fill in on the right of the defence – a possible concern given that Gareth Bale will be in opposition. John Terry suffered an ankle knock and was also subbed last night but this is apparently not a concern for the Spurs game.

Arsenal endured a nervous night at the Emirates, ultimately running out 3-1 winners but not before visitors Partizan had conjured thoughts of an unthinkable Champions League exit with an equalising goal. In the end, a spot-kick from Robin Van Persie and second-half goals from Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri proved enough to see the Gunners through, but only as runners-up in their group.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the lineup that saw off Fulham at the weekend – Robin Van Persie’s start as skipper was the most notable change – significantly he played “in the hole” behind the striker as the in-form Marouane Chamakh kept his start. Elsewhere Denilson came into the midfield for Jack Wilshere while Kieran Gibbs replaced a sick Gael Clichy at left-back.

From a Fantasy perspective all the interest surrounded Van Persie. He took on penalty duties here, relieving Samir Nasri as expected. That, and Van Persie’s role at direct free-kicks will dent the Frenchman’s potential, although Nasri’s form is surely strong enough to maintain interest and prompt further investment for now.

Van Persie’s role and the impact on his Arsenal’s team-mates is a key factor to look out for however. Last night’s decision to play him in support of Chamakh didn’t appear to work and Wenger hinted after the game that he will be rethinking his options here…

“I was not completely happy with our offensive game tonight. But I will have to watch that again. Maybe it was down to the quality of Partizan’s defending because I felt they defended in a very intelligent way and very well. I will have to analyse that a bit better.”

Wenger’s options in attack remain plentiful and it’s significant that Walcott again had to emerge from the bench to make an impact; he continues to struggle to hold down a starting role and the emergence of Nasri in a central role and Wenger’s loyalty to Andrei Arshavin, are certainly limiting his chances. If Wenger looks to pair Van Persie with Chamakh in the mid-term, Walcott looks set to remain a bench option.

Arsenal came out of the game without any significant injuries although Kieran Gibbs suffered yet another set-back. He sustained an ankle injury and Wenger has already ruled him out of contention for Monday’s game…

“He has a twisted ankle, an ankle sprain. I don’t know how damaged his ankle is – he will have a scan tomorrow. He is unbelievably unlucky. No [it is not the same ankle he injured recently], it is the right one tonight. I spoke to him, he is quite down. He is on crutches. I cannot tell you more. We will know tomorrow but he is already out for Monday night.”

Clichy will surely make a return at left-back then, while it appears unlikely that Cesc Fabregas will make reappearance in midfield. The big decision for Wenger could well be whether to start with Van Persie having handed him 90 minutes last night. A 4-5-1 formation would seem a likely scenario for the clash with United, and that could well give an opportunity for Walcott to earn a start out wide, with a remit allowing him to drift inside to support Chamakh or Van Persie.

Steven Gerrard looks odds on to return to the Liverpool lineup for the visit to St James’ Park. Roy Hodgson now faces a dilemma when it comes to accommodating his skipper following the emergence of Raul Meireles. Lucas has also performed well while Gerrard has been sitting in the stands and that may well see Hodgson relegate an unfortunate David Ngog to the bench at Newcastle, restoring Gerrard in a support role behind Fernando Torres.

Michael Dawson completed 90 minutes and scored in a in a 4-3 friendly win over MK Dons yesterday. The big defender has been on the bench in Tottenham’s last two games but is clearly edging closer to a first start – it’s unsure whether he will displace Sebastian Bassong alongside William Gallas for the clash with Chelsea; that looks unlikely.

Rio Ferdinand is expected to make United’s clash with Arsenal on Monday. The defender has been undergoing ice bath treatments to accelerate the recovery process after suffering a tight hamstring in Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Valencia. Ferdinand has kindly given us an optimistic view of his injury on his Twitter feed…

“Hammy feels OK, treatment over the next couple of days to try and get ready for the game on Monday. Get me out there!”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

At a real loss this week as what to do with me team - need to get rid of O'Shea (he's crippling me!) but for who?

    Foster (Harper)
    Coleman | Konchesky | Vidic | O'Shea (Kolarov)
MGP | Dempsey | Nani | Brunt (VDV)
    Elmander | Carroll (Tevez)

Check out the clean sweep of red 'i's on my bench...

You will have to hope that:
      1. ManU concede & Evra doesnt get an assist/goal
      3. Everton do not concede or Baines gets and assist/goal

Would you rather play Konchesky vs Newcastle, or bring in Baines for a 4 point hit and play him instead?

The transfer would be Bosingwa>Baines, which on paper is a great one. But Baines would take either Konchesky, Shawcross or Vidic’s place. Maybe Shawcross on the bench, not many keep cleanies vs Blackpool. Don't want to bench any of my front 7, have been caught with that too many times.

Not sure why people are so keen to get Stoke defenders in. A clean sheet this weekend is possible but Blackpool have a knack of scoring. After this week it's two tough away fixtures on the bounce, neither of which are likely to give defensive returns.

Well have Kolarov and Tevez out for this weekend and with 0.7 in the bank, thought it was a good opportunity to take Gohouri out for Shawcross (exact funds). Now that man is due a goal and so if he does concede he still remains a threat at the other end.

Next week away to Man City I won't need him as I'll have my compliment of Man City players back.

The other point is that Shawcross is a certain starter and with the games coming thick and fast over Xmas he serves my needs this weekend and can be called upon in future weeks at a modest 4.7m.

The move is a good one but none of those 3 are easily benched this week, so it's not worth 4 points in my book. Konchesky would be the one to bench of the 3, but cuold easily match Baines' score. A 4 point hit for a defender in the hope of a goal or assist is too much of a leap of faith. Liverpool look fairly solid at the back and I'd say a cleanie for them is just as likely as it is for Everton.

Hey guys, not sure if it says it on their website but on TotalFPL/FantasyTools, for the Betting Odds box, where do they get their data from?
Had almost certainly decided to do Drogba > Torres this week, but saw that the odds for Liverpool to score are 1.29 and for Chelsea are 1.32. Basically the same, but considering Drogba will still be on penalties, he might be more likely to score.
    Thoughts?

Well, it's interesting that you seem to favour getting rid of Evra over A.Cole - given Chelsea's next few fixtures (and form) surely he would a better choice to transfer out? (though I accept that dropping Cole would give you no Chelsea coverage)

You also still have VDV AND Bale. Given VDV injury, the impact Defoe's return my have on VDV's returns and Spur's fixture list, this seems a gamble to me. Surely downgrading one of these to say a Brunt may be a better route to money saving?

If you're still sure of getting rid of Evra, then Rafael offers you a possible chance to keep a stake in the United defence (personally I disagree with his watchlist ranking - he's too big a rotation risk especially given his ability to get injured during almost every game).

I wouldn't get in Kyriakos as you have Konchesky nor would I get Samba as you have Robinson - you will either have to play them both (eggs in one basket?) or not at all and have them benched. Though this is just my attitude to risk.

        Have you thought about Everton?

Rooney or Torres - really can't give too much of an opinion here, it's quite a gamble either way. Though given Bolton and Newcastle' next 3 fixtures i'd certainly be keeping Elmander for the next few 'easier' homegames at least so presumably that means Carroll gets the chop?

        All my opinion of course.

Anyone else thinking that Bale might be a good buy this week? Ferreira is terrible and if Baines could run circles around him then so will Bale...

    Team this week:

    Foster (Harper)
    Baines Konchesky Salcido (PJones, Kolarov)
    Barton Adam Nani Nasri Cahill
    Drogba Piquionne (Tevez)

    3.4m in the bank

I was planning on saving a transfer this week, but now I've started to think about doing Barton to Bale. Etherington, the other candidate, seems like a very short term fix to me considering fixtures and Pennant coming back.

The thing with Bale is so many have him it kills you if he gets a big points haul and you havent got him Couldnt believe the effect on the rankings last week when he was given that bloody assist. So even though I dont want him the "Ronaldo effect" is starting to kick in and think I have to get him.

Bale's next 5 are CHE bla avl NEW FUL , which isn't half bad actually.

Nope, as I posted on here yesterday, I would be somewhat worried if he had done anything from a fantasy perspective on Tuesday night for Spurs (he is in my UCL team), but he didn't, I don't think he is "due" a big score, it is also Chelsea, and while in free fall, it's still Chelsea, not too pushed about him

Aye I get ya AtB, but I was thinking of getting Bale longer term though. I want to have him for the double homegames in gw 20-21 as I don't think VDV will play both games and the away games to bpl and avl don't look too bad either. I'm also a bit worried about spurs experiencing some CL hangover again and it could be a tight lowscoring game this one.

    Begovic (Foster)
    Boateng/Vidic/Jagielka (Bardsley 2nd sub)(Simpson)
    VDV/Nasri/Nani(C)/Dunn/N'Zogbia
    Elmander/Rooney (Piquionnne 1st Sub)

Why do so many people think that Blackpool are an easy touch? Isn't this an opinion based on what the pundits thought at the beginning of the season rather than what has actually happened. Last week it was all about captaining Elmander against them and now it's Etherington. Madness.

They are scoring Goals but have the second worst defence in the league - and yet they still 'go for it' away from home.

It's not anything against blackpool - their attacking assets are constantly tipped - but you have to play the odds when it comes to defensive returns.

BTW - they conceeded twice in that Bolton game, the fact that Elmander didn't go massive is just unfortuntae.

People are choosing Etherington for two reasons, Stoke's goals are usually from set pieces (Ethers takes free-kicks, corners and pen's) or headers (Ethers plays wide left and puts most of the balls in. For all of these reasons he attracts alot of BP's.

Again, not madness, not anti-pool prejudice, just playing the odds...

Really? Why? What happens when Tevez is back and Mancini remembers that he only plays one up front? Or when things are goign badly and he wants to switch after 60 mins - who will come off, Tevez or Balotelli? Or when Balotelli get's sent back to Italy for attacking teammates?

sorry to hear that Atilla, must be very frustrating to support a club that doesn't support the fans, Ashley is scum and clearly never had the best interests of the club at heart, someone needs to buy him out before Pardew goes (in 3 months?) and before Newcastle are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.

Depends on the rest of your team. I'd go for these defenders in this particular order:

Elmohamady to anyone seems a good shout as he looks a huge 1 point risk every week atm.

Huth offers the chance of goals when he doesn't keep clean sheets but Stoke's fixtures stiffen after this week.

Could you not put your team up when asking these questions - almost impossible to calculate your best shout without knowing the balance of your squad. E.g. If you have another stoke defenders/keeper, i'd say Huth was a very poor shout.

"There is an article about him playing a big part in rest of season."

Is this not how anyone would handle an unhappy player though?

The proof is in the team selection and he keeps getting put on with 10 minutes to play...

I undesrtand not jumping on the bandwagon though hillbilly, just wonder how long you want to leave it before you realise it's too far away to catch.

SB seems more concerned with how to fit three strikers into his side atm.

Seems we agree on the strikers issue - though i'm sure Steve Bruce would say that it's not a 'problem' if those three strikers win games.

On the Elmo front though - do you judge all of your picks on the benchmark of them having "more to offer than malbranque and zenden" - this might bit a bit of a low standard...

And, Kolorov and Tevez are out for one week only - you aren't going to transfer them out surely?

And doesn't this emphasise the value of not having Elmo even more? It means that when you only have a small squad because of Tevez and Kolorov suspensions, he's more likely to be in your team and get 1 point. If he's never going to play for you, get rid.

I think my issue with Elmo is i missed the boat then got stung by others who had him. I'm actually enjoying his bench warming activities at the minute.

Do people agree that this year seems to be less about budget restricted decision making and more about simply 'who' you want?
With Lamps, SG, Rooney, Torres and Fabs all only playing bit parts this year, it seems that budget is no issue!

I would say that it's about your captain pick. Everyone's team are 90% the same (probably for the exact reason you state) so it makes a huge difference when you pick Tevez, who gets a nice 8 point haul, but others pick Nasri who get's 15.

      I'm not bitter though.

Captain is crucial, for sure, I got 58 last week, 28 from 8 players and 30 from 1 (Nasri (C)), so he literally saved my week

Exactly right, Other years have been all about managing to squeeze the key players into your team and then figuring out who to captain.
Ive found myself trying to think a little bit more towards having a couple of randoms in my team (Milijas for one) that might just do something that makes that big difference...hasnt happened yet mind!

I kind of disagree with this captain thing.

Picking the right captain has always been huge, in every single season and gameweek.

I agree that it's always been important - but the choice has always been restricted to a few players (a couple of years ago it was Ronaldo every week or you simply got battered). This is simply not the case any more. The traditional powerhouses are being outscored, or at least macthed, by players from Bolton, Blackpool and West Brom.

I am a stoke fan and don't actually agree with this weeks bandwagon but when have you ever seen so much support for a player like Etherington as captain's pick?!

It will be interesting to see the starting value of players next season (I know I really shouldnt be looking that far ahead!) but the likes of VDV - 10.5?, Nasri - 9?, Nani - 10?

I agree in the sense that I don't think it's as important to spend all your cash this season as it has been in previous ones.

The worry is of course that the big guns will start to fire at some stage so you need to keep an eye open.

I think I need to grow a pair, as I've been telling myself to take out both Malouda and Drogba for weeks now, but there's always that nagging reminder of what they did last season.

Drogba out for Tevez and Malouda out for the likes of VDV or even Cahill seem good moves, even if it would mean no Chelsea players. For the next 3 games, it's unlikely Malouda or Drogba will pick much/anything up anyway.

Same here. At least I dumped Malouda week ago. Still sitting with ACole/Drogba.

It's costing me my mini league and I honestly can't see a change in next 3 weeks.

By that time I might get Lampard instead.

The annoying thing is, in 3 games time, Chelsea have a pretty nice run! Lampard in, would be playing on my mind as he should be back by then.

But also, Drogba could start to up his game having Lampard's service.

Very easy to blame yourself on hindsight, but i can't see how you would ignore that:

      1) They are v.good playes
      2) Chelsea will be there or there abouts come May
      3) Fixtures have not been too tough for them so far
      4) They were THE in form players for the first 7 or so weeks.

At the minute however, only points 1 and 2 are true so might be worth considering dropping one (perhaps not remove all coverage from Chelsea attackers though?) and err, don't be so hard on yourself...

I was thinking of a cheeky punt on Torres this week. A bit worried about Liverpool's away form, Torres' form and the fact that the St James pitch was in awful condition against Chelsea which usually means a low scoring game in my books...

I've been on the verge of losing Malouda for about 7 weeks now, but there's always been something a bit more pressing. It's got me nothing really, this weekend HE REALLY IS GOING. But only for Bale.

Well, It's worth noting that with Bosignwa now out perhaps it will be Bale on the left who will be best place to exploit their current defensive issues - but I struggle to see why you would drop Malouda this week.

Tottenham have not kept a clean sheet since GW1 - will Bale really outscore Malouda by a large an amount?!

(BTW - I currently have Bale and not Malouda but only because I was overexposed to Chelsea as I still have A.Cole and Drogs.)

Tell me about it, I hate cutting my losses. But Chelsea are 1000000% not gonna keep up a half a goal a game average. I'm keeping them, it's not like money's much if an issue

Totally agree (though in the short-term the fixtures suggest it might be a bit longer so you might be able to get better value elsewhere for a month or so and bring them back come Wildcard weeks?) Tough decision for me too.

Same for me. Well not with Malouda, but with Drogba.

I really need to learn to sell my players earlier. I'll probably find a more pressing transfer to make and convince myself he'll get something this gameweek as well. Blah.
