Chelsea’s slide continues as they suffer a late defeat in Marseille, while at the Emirates a nervy 3-1 win is enough for a subdued Arsenal to progress, but only as group runners-up, paving the way for a potential meeting with Spain’s big boys.

Elsewhere, there’s news on the fitness of Steven Gerrard and Michael Dawson, while, in between ice baths, Rio Ferdinand’s been busy on Twitter again…

Those clinging to Chelsea’s Fantasy assets could find little to comfort them from the 1-0 defeat in Marseille. On an emotional night for Didier Drogba, he failed to show a glimmer of renewed form or confidence and his current malaise typifies Chelsea as a whole right now.

Although already through to the last 16 prior to the game, Carlo Ancelotti’s concern on his side’s current slide will deepen further after last night’s performance. Although denied a couple of penalty appeals, Chelsea were in the main, second best to their French opponents.

“The performance was not so bad defensively where we had a good control of the game but we could do better up front. We had a lot of opportunities to do counter attack but we didn’t do so well with the final pass or the final shot.”

The lack of attacking prowess is a worry for Ancelotti given the strength of his lineup last night. Nicolhas Anelka and Ashley Cole were rested but the likes of Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda and Micheal Essien all started, along with Drogba. Elsewhere Josh McEachran came into the midfield with John Mikel Obi rested with a Champions League suspension looming.

Mikel will return to the lineup for the visit to Spurs this weekend and Ancelotti remains hopeful that Frank Lampard will join him in midfield. Jose Bosingwa is out of the weekend clash however – he limped off with a hamstring injury and has already been ruled out by Ancelotti. That will mean Paulo Ferreira, who started at left-back last night, will fill in on the right of the defence – a possible concern given that Gareth Bale will be in opposition. John Terry suffered an ankle knock and was also subbed last night but this is apparently not a concern for the Spurs game.

Arsenal endured a nervous night at the Emirates, ultimately running out 3-1 winners but not before visitors Partizan had conjured thoughts of an unthinkable Champions League exit with an equalising goal. In the end, a spot-kick from Robin Van Persie and second-half goals from Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri proved enough to see the Gunners through, but only as runners-up in their group.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the lineup that saw off Fulham at the weekend – Robin Van Persie’s start as skipper was the most notable change – significantly he played “in the hole” behind the striker as the in-form Marouane Chamakh kept his start. Elsewhere Denilson came into the midfield for Jack Wilshere while Kieran Gibbs replaced a sick Gael Clichy at left-back.

From a Fantasy perspective all the interest surrounded Van Persie. He took on penalty duties here, relieving Samir Nasri as expected. That, and Van Persie’s role at direct free-kicks will dent the Frenchman’s potential, although Nasri’s form is surely strong enough to maintain interest and prompt further investment for now.

Van Persie’s role and the impact on his Arsenal’s team-mates is a key factor to look out for however. Last night’s decision to play him in support of Chamakh didn’t appear to work and Wenger hinted after the game that he will be rethinking his options here…

“I was not completely happy with our offensive game tonight. But I will have to watch that again. Maybe it was down to the quality of Partizan’s defending because I felt they defended in a very intelligent way and very well. I will have to analyse that a bit better.”

Wenger’s options in attack remain plentiful and it’s significant that Walcott again had to emerge from the bench to make an impact; he continues to struggle to hold down a starting role and the emergence of Nasri in a central role and Wenger’s loyalty to Andrei Arshavin, are certainly limiting his chances. If Wenger looks to pair Van Persie with Chamakh in the mid-term, Walcott looks set to remain a bench option.

Arsenal came out of the game without any significant injuries although Kieran Gibbs suffered yet another set-back. He sustained an ankle injury and Wenger has already ruled him out of contention for Monday’s game…

“He has a twisted ankle, an ankle sprain. I don’t know how damaged his ankle is – he will have a scan tomorrow. He is unbelievably unlucky. No [it is not the same ankle he injured recently], it is the right one tonight. I spoke to him, he is quite down. He is on crutches. I cannot tell you more. We will know tomorrow but he is already out for Monday night.”

Clichy will surely make a return at left-back then, while it appears unlikely that Cesc Fabregas will make reappearance in midfield. The big decision for Wenger could well be whether to start with Van Persie having handed him 90 minutes last night. A 4-5-1 formation would seem a likely scenario for the clash with United, and that could well give an opportunity for Walcott to earn a start out wide, with a remit allowing him to drift inside to support Chamakh or Van Persie.

Steven Gerrard looks odds on to return to the Liverpool lineup for the visit to St James’ Park. Roy Hodgson now faces a dilemma when it comes to accommodating his skipper following the emergence of Raul Meireles. Lucas has also performed well while Gerrard has been sitting in the stands and that may well see Hodgson relegate an unfortunate David Ngog to the bench at Newcastle, restoring Gerrard in a support role behind Fernando Torres.

Michael Dawson completed 90 minutes and scored in a in a 4-3 friendly win over MK Dons yesterday. The big defender has been on the bench in Tottenham’s last two games but is clearly edging closer to a first start – it’s unsure whether he will displace Sebastian Bassong alongside William Gallas for the clash with Chelsea; that looks unlikely.

Rio Ferdinand is expected to make United’s clash with Arsenal on Monday. The defender has been undergoing ice bath treatments to accelerate the recovery process after suffering a tight hamstring in Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Valencia. Ferdinand has kindly given us an optimistic view of his injury on his Twitter feed…

“Hammy feels OK, treatment over the next couple of days to try and get ready for the game on Monday. Get me out there!”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Kolarov seems best option due to Brunt's 4 yellows. I guess it depends how near perfect your team is and whether Brunt benched/transferred out for 1 game would be ok.

Is it mad to bring Carroll in now, considering his fixtures?I have wanted to bring him in for quite a few weeks now,but had some more pressing concerns.I still have O'Shea to replace but I can stick with him for one more week.Ignoring Carroll has been the cause of my downfall this season as he has racked up points regularly and he's in over half the teams. My current team is:

      Foster,Krul,
      Kyrgiakos,Coleman,O'Shea,Jara,D.Collins,
      Nani,Nasri,Cahill,Adam,Barton,
      Drogba,Tevez,Elmander.(1 freebie,3.5 in the bank)

I'm thinking of doing Drogba->Carroll,play Adam this week, then when Tevez comes back next week I can revert to 3-4-3 and do O'Shea->Samba.How does that sound??

You'd be bringing him in for his most difficult run of fixtures to date,at a time we're not sure what is going on with the club.Or how the players will react.Could work well of course, but I won't be making that choice.

There are a few things that really make a miss better.

The first one is how long the wait is after you've realized it's a sitter, until he misses it. So the tension builds up and you know he'll score, and then he doesn't.

The second is how much trickery is involved, and that is why I loved this one. He really tries to make the fanciest trick EVER when the keaper is beat and then it all fails.

                  Great list.

I'm sick of having Carson as my main keeper, since Mignolet got his place.

I think I'm just going to buy an expensive keeper and play him every week as Carson is incapable of cleansheets so not even much point rotating him.

I'm currently deciding between the following...

          a) Hart (I have Kolarov)
          b) Reina (I have Konchesky)
          c) Van Der Sar (2 difficult fixtures but no United coverage in defence)
          d) No need to spend so much on a keeper, go for a cheaper option

          Thoughts?

I have a gut feeling Essien will be playing at RB, with Malouda taking his spot in the midfield, to contain Bale. There is no way Ferreria can stop Bale. What do you guys think?

Perhaps right on Ferreria being unable to contain Bale, but if he's up for it who can? I mean Maicon is widely recognised as one of the best right back in the world (he keeps Dani Alves out of the Brazil squad) and he was mined for 180 mins in the CL.

But moving Essien from the engine room must be questionable? Who then looks after Modric who, whilst less likely to score goal of the season, often runs the show from the middle by keeping possession and cleverly switching the play to exploit any gaps.

What next, Drogs playing at centre half when they play Stoke away to counter the long ball?

If Ferraira isn't good enough, he simply shouldn't be at the club.

A few teams have shown you can stop bale quite easily. You need a very fast RB, and you can't leave him one on one with space to run into. Rafael snuffed him out, as did a few others. Carlo wouldn't let him run riot over Ferrari like he did last season surely.

I disagree. Torres has a better scoring record which I think is quite important for a striker. Drogba gets a goal every other game. Torres gets two goals every three games.

Think this is going to be the most repeated question this week. For me yes but it could wait a week, then you have two transfers to work VDV into your team and cover any injuries suspensions over the weekend.

Rooney also has to be worth looking at.

Hehe just read 'arry's take on it

No Loyalty: Harry Redknapp reflects on Chris Hughton’s sacking to shout “in football there is no such thing as loyalty… Chairmen, managers, players, coaches. Pretty much all of us operate in our own selfish interest. It’s a cut-throat business. Cold and hard. I think it was a poor decision to sack Chris. He performed beyond expectations, getting Newcastle promoted back to the Premier League after one season as title winners in the Championship. Recent results have been good, too. Winning at Arsenal, destroying Aston Villa, putting five past Sunderland. Why you would want to sack him is beyond me. It defies logic. But then football defies logic. It defies logic that Chelsea sacked Ray Wilkins. They were top of the league and unbeaten. It defies logic that they let Jose Mourinho go three years ago. Axing Chris Hughton defies logic. But that’s how it is. Football has changed a lot since the inception of the Premier League, but the lack of loyalty has been a constant throughout.”

Hardly unusual in football circles for a manager or other pundit to use one argument for one question and the opposite for another. They are forever contradicting themselves when it suits them. The football public are mugs for even bothering to take note of most of the things they come out with....

            Blatter - "Vote was transparent"

Pele, ha. Even in fiction he can't get his predictions right. Gets axed by some nazi in escape to victory and says there's no way he can carry on. Then he comes back on in the 2nd half and inspires the comeback.

Are there any players which your rivals own and wish they were in your team but haven't been able to fit them in yet as you've seen other more pressing matters?

I've missed not having Tevez as my rivals have had him and he's had some great scores. Obviously this week is an exception but overall, he's got to be the one I've been worried about.

Cahill has been another and now it's Nasri, even though I had him throughout his earlier great spell.

                  Tevez/Carrol/Odemwingie

                  0.5m in the bank

If you want Lampard, might as well wait for the Jan wildcard rather than wasting points shuffling your team around.

It could be an idea, but Chelsea do have an attractive mini run of games from GW20, so it's worth bearing in mind.

          Tricky back three decision...

          Vidic - Jara - Krygiak - Coleman - Kolarov

Leaning towards Vidic - Krygiak - Coleman but Jara has been tempting me to bench vidic... should I be tempted given the form arsenal are in?!
