Though the strength in depth of Man City’s expensively-assembled squad makes many of Roberto Mancini’s players a source of Fantasy frustration, eleven starts in the past twelve games suggest otherwise in the case of David Silva. With Mancini’s preference for three defensive midfielders in the City starting XI, the Spaniard offers the creative flair, supplying the preferred front pairing of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli.

With City just three points off the Premier League summit right now, a run of fixtures over the New Year that reads (whm, EVE, new, AVL, Blp, ars) give Mancini the chance to firmly establish their top-four credentials and help satisfy owner Sheikh Monsour’s thirst for Champions League qualification. If the team continue to play with a defensive solidity that has seen Joe Hart keep 8 clean sheets already this season, they certainly have the quality in the final third of the field to make a difference; with Silva’s remarkable pace and nimble feet at the heart of their attacking moves, expect the Spanish international to pop up with an assist or two and perhaps make the score sheet.

Priced at £8.5million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Silva owners would naturally insist on a decent return from their investment and with a slightly underwhelming return of 51 points so far this season, his acquisition might be questioned. However, with midfield big-hitters Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Frank Lampard and Rafael Van der Vaart all still fighting their way back from injuries, Mikel Arteta suspended and Tim Cahill set to depart for the Asia Cup at the end of the month, Silva’s time to prove himself as a weighty asset could well be nigh.

Silva’s low FPL ownership of just 2.1% is one of the player’s most appealing attributes. With Gareth Bale, Nani, Florent Malouda and Samir Nasri apparently all the rage this Christmas, David Silva could be the key “differential” to aid your Fantasy Team. Though it just depends whether you’re the kind of person who can tolerate a snood…

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Hmmm, I want to bring Cahill in, do people reckon he will last until the Brum home game on boxing day? If he does stay for that long surely he is worth getting in? No? I will get rid of VDV for him but will have selection troubles with the below attack, so maybe not worth it.

    N'Zogbia Nani Nasri Dunn Cahill
    Torres Elmander Carroll

Wouldn't have a clue who to bench, would probably be N'Zog unfortunately, but looking at Cahill Vs Wigan, I haven't been able to find the scorers of one of the games, but playing for Everton he has never scored Vs Wigan. He may have for Millwall, I don't know.

Berbatov had never scored against Liverpool and smashed 3 in.

Dont always go with the stats.

Cahill is in top form and very dangerous, sometimes playing as a striker.

I don't, I can see them stealing a goal of Liverpool.

Newcastle 1-3 Liverpool, or something like that anyways I reckon. If Barton and Nolan are back then they have even more of a chance of scoring, but I don't know if they are.

he IS playing fookin midfield, that was the whole point of getting him for everyone. he might get 4 points for a clean sheet aswell, and he's at home.

    Foster, Krul
Samba, Jara, Cahill, Cole A, Baines
Van der Vaart, Nani, Nasri, Gamst Pedersen, Barton
    Drogba, Carroll, Elmander

Have 1 free transfer this week. Thinking maybe Barton to someone like Etherington/Dempsey/N.Zog

Want to bring in Krygiakos and Torres next week though, what would people do?

So, as a Blackburn fan, what's your take on Phil Jones vs Samba vs Nelsen from a fantasy perspective? Nelsen really seems to be an attacking threat as well and Jones soaks up them bonus points.

Samba, Nelsen, Jones in that order for me. Samba is still the biggest threat from set pieces but Nelsen has benefited from all the attention BIG Chris gets. He has a bit more space and usually a less capable marker. In truth they are all great options for the next month or so with our fixtures.

Out of that lot I would be looking to ship Krul/Barton/Carroll/Drogba/Elmander in the next few weeks. I did Krul OUT Begovic IN this week as I was happy enough with everything else.

Elmander is going for me soon too, fixtures toughen up and we may have seen the best of him. Carroll was a goal a game legend, now with so much uncertainty, I would be looking elsewhere too, Odemwingie maybe, and Tevez or Torres for Elmander and Drogba. Barton OUT Etherington IN is an excellent move this week

Thanks Johnny. I agree on them list of players too, this week its going to be Barton, next week Drogba and then Krul and Elmander will follow, not sure what to do with Carroll yet though.

Going to do Drogba to Torres next week and maybe bring in Krygiakos too, Liverpool have a nice run of fixtures coming up.

I would go Tevez over Torres Rock, fixtures mean didly when it comes to Pool to be honest, they are finding a bit of form, but City are 3 points off the top, need to win every game, and Tevez is almost guaranteed to get something out of every game at that rate

    Jermaine Defoe

Could this guy be a good pick?

Yes, in previous seasons he has scored big on the odd occasion and even once he went on a good sustained run. However, it's common opinion he would hurt you more than he would reward you with poor scores and even rotation.

Is he a good punt for the next few weeks with his price and fictures and is anyone thinking of getting him?

He seems to be able to put the ball in the net (just not from the spot:)).

Or will his incosistency and rotational risk/coming back from injury just put you off?

Good differential or just plain stupid?

Had him before and he has the rare massive game but he never gets assits and rarely gets bonus. He loves missing penalties too.

You need someone who runs around a lot like Tevez for a steady flow of BP's.

he has only burned me in the past, like Arshavin, I will always avoid if at all possible personally, and I can avoid, so don't have to have him. He is too hot and cold for my liking, 5 goals in a game, then nothing for weeks and weeks, if you are lucky enough to have him when he does well, great, after that, sell, there are far more consistent scorers out there

    Afternoon all

I have the front three of Torres, Drogba, Tevez. What to do?

    Take out Drogba for Rooney?
    ..or leave as it is?

not sure anyone can answer that, so keep them all.I would imagin e if you have those three up top a change elsewhere might be more beneficial.

    Hey guys,

Need a bit of help with my team this week. At the moment its:

    Krul, Foster
    Konchesky, Bosingwa, Kolarov, Dann, Vidic
    Malouda, Nasri, Bale, Cahill, Nani
    Tevez, Carroll, Elmander

I've got 0.0 in the bank and have two injured players - Tevez and Kolarov. Also, have just one free transfer.

Would it be best to replace them both this week? Wanna bring a big striker in for Tevez, who would you recommend? Rooney/Berbatov/Drogba maybe?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Infact if I want another big striker, I will have to replace them both, so who would you recommend to replace Kolarov - need them to be cheaper.

Leave it as-is.. that team looks about as future-proof as it gets to me.

          Krul
          Konchesky Dann Vidic
          Malouda Nasri Bale Cahill Nani
          Carroll Elmander (c)

I'd play the above team and keep your transfer. Or play Foster in goal if you want to double-up on Brum defence in hope of a cleanie, but I don't like putting all my FPL eggs in one basket :). This week will be a low-scoring week for everyone so don't stress over all the difficult/away fixtures.

Oh and regarding the "big" stikers..

            Drogba - off form
Rooney - not proven fit yet and difficult fixtures
            Torres - always bloody injured
            Berbatov - inconsistent

I don't think they justify investment at the moment really. I've got the same strikeforce as you and I'll be keeping for a while. I'll change if Carrol's for dips or when Bolton's fixtures get harder in about 4 weeks time.

So i see the latest on Gerrard is that he WILL be available for the Newcastle game. Can't see Woy splitting up Lucas and Meireles in the middle so could mean N'Gog making way and Gerrard up top with Fernando.

            i like this:
Meanwhile, Hodgson has revealed Daniel Agger has an outside chance of facing Fulham on Saturday week.

The Dane has not featured since September 25 due to a calf injury.

Hodgson said: "Agger is much better and working very, very hard. He's really pushing himself beyond what we could expect him to do. His attitude to getting back is first class.

"We're targeting the Fulham game. The Sports Science people are telling me it's too soon and that really he needs a bit longer, but in my conversations with him he is in agreement that Fulham isn't out of the question so he's pushing it."

either way, kyrgiakos played good last wkend albeit versus a shite villa. He also could have scored twice, and was very unlucky to have one cleared off the line. Agger is guaranteed nothing

    c. Downgrade Evra to Kyrgiakos

    Nani/Bale (c)/Nasri/Cahill (NZogbia)
    Drogba/Carroll/Elmander

Current thinkings is to ship Drogs out for one of Rooney or Torres this week, then next week swap Cole for Samba and Elmander for Tevez. Will feel weird not having any Chelsea coverage, but no sentiment allowed in this game.

Everyone is looking at Torres/Tevez and maybe Rooney as a replacement for Drogba at the moment, with that in mind, I am bored in work and decided to look at some stats to further explore the merits of each replacement, I looked at their attacking threat, and was quite interested by some of them, and it goes like this: (this is slightly more Rooney focused as I got him last week btw)

    ROONEY

    Appearances-7
    Lay-offs-53
    Through balls-18
    Total attempts on goal-15
    Total on target-7

    TEVEZ

    Appearances-15
    Lay-offs-68
    Through balls-20
    Total attempts on goal-41
    Total on target-21

    TORRES

    Appearances-15
    Lay-offs-28
    Through balls-7
    Total attempts on goal-32
    Total on target-18

What is interesting about all this is that in only 7 appearances, Rooney holds his own in respect of lay-offs and through balls, which is encouraging in respect of the potential assists he could be getting.

    As for goal threat:

ROONEY: 46% of his shots on goal are on target, with an average of 2 attempts on goal per game from his 7 appearances.

TEVEZ: 51% of his shots on goal are on target, with an average of 2.5 attempts on goal per game from his 15 appearances.

TORRES: 56% of his shots on goal are on target, with an average of 2.13 attempts on goal per game from his 15 appearances.

So there you have it, Rooney compares pretty favourably against the two T's. It is clear that if United start finishing more of their chances, which they have every chance of doing, that Rooney has the potential for more and more assists, his shot count per game is also even enough with the two T's, coupled with pens, Tevez and Rooney appear to be the two best replacements for Drogba (of the big guns) for the time being.
