Though the strength in depth of Man City’s expensively-assembled squad makes many of Roberto Mancini’s players a source of Fantasy frustration, eleven starts in the past twelve games suggest otherwise in the case of David Silva. With Mancini’s preference for three defensive midfielders in the City starting XI, the Spaniard offers the creative flair, supplying the preferred front pairing of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli.

With City just three points off the Premier League summit right now, a run of fixtures over the New Year that reads (whm, EVE, new, AVL, Blp, ars) give Mancini the chance to firmly establish their top-four credentials and help satisfy owner Sheikh Monsour’s thirst for Champions League qualification. If the team continue to play with a defensive solidity that has seen Joe Hart keep 8 clean sheets already this season, they certainly have the quality in the final third of the field to make a difference; with Silva’s remarkable pace and nimble feet at the heart of their attacking moves, expect the Spanish international to pop up with an assist or two and perhaps make the score sheet.

Priced at £8.5million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Silva owners would naturally insist on a decent return from their investment and with a slightly underwhelming return of 51 points so far this season, his acquisition might be questioned. However, with midfield big-hitters Steven Gerrard, Cesc Fabregas, Frank Lampard and Rafael Van der Vaart all still fighting their way back from injuries, Mikel Arteta suspended and Tim Cahill set to depart for the Asia Cup at the end of the month, Silva’s time to prove himself as a weighty asset could well be nigh.

Silva’s low FPL ownership of just 2.1% is one of the player’s most appealing attributes. With Gareth Bale, Nani, Florent Malouda and Samir Nasri apparently all the rage this Christmas, David Silva could be the key “differential” to aid your Fantasy Team. Though it just depends whether you’re the kind of person who can tolerate a snood…

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

I'm leaning that way too. My problem is that my team is nicely set up now but Kolarov and Tevez are out this week.

If they were out longer then I'd think about getting a short term replacement. As it is though I'll want both back next week so I don't see the point of messing my team up for a one week rental.

I can play Bale, Nani, Nasri and N'Zogbia this week so, again, VdV can stay on my bench as i'll want him next week too. Cahill is tempting for this week, but I'd have to sell VdV to make it worthwhile this week. Which, again, means getting VdV back, this time for Bale, a week later.

I suppose, in an odd way, that move actually makes some sense as long as no points hit is taken, do you think?

I would want Cahill for the Wigan fixture, he has been my VDV replacement and served me well.

VDV is not guaranteed to come back on any particular date so I would rather have Cahill scoring me points until he does.

Yeah. i'd go Cahill, Nani then Bale. In that order too.

Bale will be up against Ferrera and will have had an extra days rest this time after a midweek CL game. I can see him getting a lot of joy against Ferrera.

Anyone think it's worth trading drogba out for torres this week? I was going to get him out for tevez but seeing as he isn't playing this week I'm not sure what to do. I could just keep my team as it is and save the transfer, which is tempting after looking at the clean sheet/scoring odds.

      Liverpool 1.29 to score
      Chelsea 1.32 to score.

Indeed. Had the other Everton mid instead (who shall remain unnamed) Looks like he still has a few gameweeks left in him though and is racking up the points. Problem is, most people in my league have him as well, i'm fifty points behind and need the differential. Frank could be just that, however it might be a bit preemptive with him just returning from injury, Chelsea's current form and their fixtures. In other words Cahill is the safe bet this week, Lampard is the risk.

Meanwhile, Hodgson has revealed Daniel Agger has an outside chance of facing Fulham on Saturday week.

The Dane has not featured since September 25 against Sunderland due to a calf injury.

Hodgson said: "Agger is much better and working very, very hard. He's really pushing himself beyond what we could expect him to do. His attitude to getting back is first class.

"We're targeting the Fulham game. The Sports Science people are telling me it's too soon and that really he needs a bit longer, but in my conversations with him he is in agreement that Fulham isn't out of the question so he's pushing it."

Anyone consider it worth it spending this weeks free transfer on getting Bale in - as a direct response to the fact that Ferreira is probably playing RB?

I'll probably get accused of bias here, but transferring someone in before they play Chelsea is never a good idea. There are much better alternatives out there..

After the way Bale tore Ferreira apart last season, we'll surely do something to try to negate him.. Bale vs Ferreira with no support from Anelka/Kalou would be an absolute shambles.

And if Carlo does nothing about it, well then we may as well sack him now.

Ramires has played in a right midfield/wing role before, so I'd play him out there instead of Anelka and just tell him to mark the hell out of Bale.

Ramires' two best attributes as far as I can tell are pace and work rate... He can probably match Bale in both of these areas, so putting him on Bale would help Ferreira considerably.

Isn't not his fault our squad is so thin... He wanted to keep Ballack etc but Roman wasn't having any of it. And what would sacking the manager achieve? It's not suddenly going to make the squad more confident and make the likes of Kalou better players.

            My dad wants him sacked.

I got Bale back in just after his mega haul, because he is owned by so many, has the potential to score big and is pretty consistent week in week out for assists anyway. He's a season keeper for me now. The chelsea rg reason is a good one as well, but that's just one game. There are many other reasons to get him.
        In short - do it.

Who is best option defend under £4.2m.

Im thinking Foley now he is OOP and has BIR wba WIG coming up.

      Any suggestions?

(this would be along side 4pt of Ameobi to Balotelli)

You do know that they are the only team not to have kept a clean sheet this season, plus he's got no bps fall back on either.

It's not like he has many options at that price though, There's only really 3 to choose from imo - Foley, Simpson, Jara. None are great though Simpson is probably the best chance of getting cs's when williamson and collocini are back, best to look at who rotates best with your other defenders though and go for him.

Balotelli is not worth a 4 point especially for just one week, neither is a defender where it looks unlikely that he will get a clean sheet.

Is OPTA Joe taking the f*cking piss with the choice of word at the end?

32 - Newcastle United have made fewer substitutions than any other Premier League team this season. Settled.
