A high octane Old Trafford encounter, played out in a strangled middle third, provided the odd flash of quality but ultimately saw United edge the win that took them to the Premier League summit. Ji-Sung Park’s improvised looping header from a deflected Nani cross proved the deciding factor, as Alex Ferguson’s rearguard kept the Gunners at arm’s length to prolong their unbeaten run…

The selection of Wojciech Szczesny in goal dominated the headlines when it came to Arsenal’s team sheet. The young Pole came in to replace compatriot Lukasz Fabianski after he had suffered a hip injury in the Champions League in midweek. Szczesny did his reputation no harm on the night, making an array of smart saves to deny United a bigger winning margin.

Elsewhere in the Gunners lineup, Cesc Fabregas was only fit enough for a place on the bench but saw action on 64 minutes when he replaced Tomas Rosicky in midfield. Arsene Wenger went with five in the middle of the park, with Marouane Chamakh leading the attack, leaving Robin Van Persie also kept in reserve on the bench. Both Fabregas and Van Persie are surely edging closer to starts and Wenger could well throw them in against Stoke this weekend off the back of last night’s damaging defeat.

Marouane Chamakh picked up his fourth bookings of the season last night and are now on the suspension tightrope, just one booking away from a one-match ban.

Aware of Arsenal’s likely 4-5-1 formation, Alex Ferguson opted to pack the midfield. That saw Dimitar Berbatov drop to the bench, allowing Rooney to lead the attack in a 4-2-3-1 formation which had Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick providing midfield cover, anchored by Anderson, with Nani and Park flanking Rooney.

We’ve seen Ferguson abandon the 4-4-2 in previous seasons and clearly he will look at opting for a packed midfield in the big games when up against a 4-5-1 – we could even see a similar setup at Stamford Bridge next weekend. Berbatov, having scored 5 goals in his last start, could well find himself on the bench for a second game running; not amusing for those who invested off the back of his Blackburn blitz.

Ji-Sung Park’s goal was his fourth of the season and, bizarrely his third in three starts against Arsenal. It earned the Korean the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points on the night, his second such haul of the season. At just 4.9 in the FPL, Park will attract attention but will be departing Old Trafford after Boxing Day for the Asian Cup and, according to Ferguson, will be absent for United’s seven matches that follow.

Park was not the only player singled out by Ferguson for praise. The United boss also acclaimed the performance of his back four who restricted the Gunners to just brief glimpses of Edwin van der Sar’s goal.

“We defended very well, the back four were fantastic tonight, absolutely magnificent.”

Rio Ferdinand was particularly impressive, while defensive partner Nemanja Vidic was on hand to clear Chamakh’s goal bound effort in the second-half. Rafael also looked solid at right-back and has surely now cemented this role after a string of convincing showings. The Brazilian is by far the cheapest route to United defensive returns and, at 5.6 in the FPL, looks a superb bargain. United have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 5 league outings, conceding just 3 goals over that spell.

Anderson is another prospect worth monitoring. Like Rafael, his improved performances are beginning to be rewarded with regular starts. He will be under constant pressure from the likes of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick however, so we need further reassurance before escalating an interest. He does represent a potential mid-price prospect for United’s double Gameweek 24 however.

Wayne Rooney’s missed penalty stained his copybook on the night but he once again hinted at returns to come. Significantly, Rooney did see less of the ball as a result of Berbatov’s absence. With the Bulgarian on the field, Rooney comes deep and has more influence; last night he had half the number of touches (52) that he enjoyed in the 7-1 win over Blackburn. Rooney is still searching for his first goal from open play this season but did fire in 4 attempts on goal, 3 of which were on target. As his performances show promise, Rooney will be beginning to tempt Fantasy investment given the Carlos Tevez situation and the current lack of sharpness on show from Fernando Torres.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Repost, just submitted on previous board:

    Good Morning Vietnam.

    Robinson

    Cole, Konchesky, Dann

    Gerrard, Malouda, Nani, Nasri, Brunt

    Drogba, Carroll

    Subs: Elmander, Coleman, Simpson

Hoping for a big GW, tons of home games, onyl nani and carroll, the two leaders of fantasy ATM, on the road. Was thinking my move would be to get VDV in for Malouda, then I thought just save the transfer and see how the VDV/Blackpool weather situation holds out, now Im thinking, do I swap out Cole for Kolarov? Like Kolarov certainly for the weekend, would free up enough money to go Nasri->fabs ina couple weeks after i get vdv in next week.

Sound good lads? can i get by with a defence of Kolarov, Konch, dann, Coleman and simpson?

i think u need some Man Utd coverage at the back, Rafael?? cheap and a starter according to th article.

Common thought is if u have kept Malouda this long may as well hold on, Chelsea could suddenly erupt one day and then everybody will be right back on board. I am unsure of SG this year maybe thats ur best route for VDV.

thanks brother. was going for raffy in a few weeks. after the 3 week transfer plan i already metioned i was going to do simpson-->rafael and drogba--->rooney in time for double GW. i would like a ManU defender but i have zero city players andi think kolarov is more valuble ATM, fixtures and with tevez drama, kolarov may be the man to own.
And with the WC coming into play again in a few weeks, i figure if chelsea turns it aound i will WC things, till then Im sick of malouda getting subbed off, gotta cash out.

Stick with Tevez for now, he's known he's wanted to go since the summer and has still been quality. Torres is really not playing well this year as well. I would wait until the Mancini press conference before pulling the trigger. If Tevez plays, he'll still be one to have IMO.

Dont like the VDV bit if the weather predictions are anything to go on.

Tevez appar will atend the ManC training this morning and make himself available for the Juve game.

If Mancini selects him I suppose is the real issue(article on totalfpl)

I think it has the potential to work out really well for you, but Fergie does like to play a taller right back when playing taller teams with a more long ball approach so Rafael could be rotated out. However, due to his current good form and their upcoming fixtures (Chelsea, Sund, Birmingham), he's probably a great shout.

I've just lost my H2H this week because Nani's assist wasn't given in Yahoo...Ridiculous.

How could anyone think that it was a shot? And even if it was a shot, so what?

How many time has a player had his own shot stopped by a teammate, then directed towards the back of the net, and it's still been counted as an assist!

Milijas did this versus United and it was an assist, rightfully!

I'm saying that the defender didn't stop it, he failed to stop it. It was a fail, the cross was not a shot. The shot/cross was not dramatically altered, not like when a teammate stops it.

Am sure there will be another hundred 'wheres my assist for nani?' posts and altho the defender changed the angle of pass/shot, why did Bale get his (belated) assist when ge SHOT at goal - it was saved - then followed up ( in completely the other direction)??

This is not a difficult topic to understand. It clearly states in the rules if a player shoots and the keeper saves it and a goal is scored directly from the save the player gets the assist. That is EXACTLY what happened with bale.

The rules also say if the ball takes a significant deflection from a defender during the pass/shot, unless it goes directly into the goal an assist WILL NOT be given. This is EXACTLY what happened with nani. If the defender doesnt get the big touch it doesnt go to park and they dont score, discussion over, both decisions are correct as per the rules.

Hmmm to be honest i'm struggling to see who you could change. Might be worth banking a transfer this week. Maybe Bale? Or even Zog.

No point benching Cahill vs ManC, he could well score.

Bale is a funny one, i'm getting annoyed with him as a FPL player. Teams are just going to shut him down, or force him to play in a way that benefits the team but not earn fantasy points. Know what i mean?

who to bench this week… saving my transfer for next week.

    foster, (begovic)
    baines, samba, konchesky, (koralov, foley)
    nani, nasri, bale, mgp, brunt
    drogba, tevez, carroll

not sure who to bench from the front 8… thoughts?

if tevez wont play then theres no problem. maybe bench drogba from that lot?

I'd play Kolarov over Baines, or perhaps both and bench konch

Okay, I have watched the Park goal again and I can now see the deflection. I still think he deserved the assist - the deflection didn't materially affect the direction of the ball, it just made the chance a bit harder for Park to take than it would otherwise have been.

Look at it another way - if Nani had shot and the equivalent deflection had taken the ball into the net, would it have been chalked off as an own goal?! I think not.

The ball was going no where near Park without the deflection! It was heading for the goal, Park was standing outside the 6yd box!

If the hypothetical "shot" you mention had been off target and gone in, it would have been an own goal yes.

And the actual shot was materially affected by the deflection, he shot one way, it went the other.

Besides, FPL haven't given it, and they won't in my view.

There is a 0% chance that it will be given. Was never an assist nor should it be given.

Can you see the ball spin? Maybe the video doesn't show it. Nani would have got the goal as the shot was on target before the deflection. You can't look at it like that. The defenders touch is the most important, without it the goal doesn't occur.

I like the way people act like the defender got a tiny, insignificant touch, the path and speed of the ball changed massively!

Goes to show what FPL does to peoples eyes. If you have Nani as captain then the defender didn't touch it. I have him as captain & it's crystal clear that there was no assist.

True, but it's also true we need clear rules:

Nani: not an assist - deflected by Clichy
Bale: not an assist - deflected by Foster (slightly) and Dann (most importantly)

            Simple.

What are you on about Waldaz. The Bale assist didn't hit Dann which cancels out the Foster parry/deflection. The rules are clear.

I think it was arguably a Nani assist, but only because of the precedent that has been set. When the distance between the playing kicking the ball and the player who it deflects off is small, then they are usually given (no actual examples come to mind, but I'm sure it's happened several times).

Having said that, in an ideal world it was definitely not an assist, just a pity FPL struggle with consistency.

As many points on the bench as in the team this week and have stuck with Drogba for a long while....has the point come to ditch him?

Currently have Torres and Carrol as my other two strikers - do i switch Drogba for Defoe and then to Rooney once United's fixtures become more striker friendly?

Also, who in my defence should I swap Kolarov in for...I feel he is the best DEF option in coming game weeks. Jones or Enrique. Jones has the nicer figures but will a new manager leak goals?

    Cheers in advance guys

I have Drogba too, stuck by him. I'm gonna wait til later in the week but he is either going this week or next. I will transfer in Rooney, he is lookin good.

I might save my transfer this week (Chelsea at home). Personally I think Rooney is gonna blow up before (and more consistently) than Drogba will.

If you haven't ditch him already, keep him. OK, he missed the penalty, but I think he's looking better and better. I wouldn't buy him myself, not yet, but that is of course a different situation ("not buying" does not equal "selling").
