Liverpool play out a drab stalemate with FC Utrecht in their meaningless Europa League tie, as Fernando Torres remains benched and Joe Cole remains ineffective. Elsewhere Frank Lampard is upping his preparation for the weekend clash with United and Birmingham appear to have at last found a suitable role for Nikola Zigic…as a training aid…

Roy Hodgson employed a 4-4-2 system with Ryan Babel and young Nathan Eccleston paired in attack. Elsewhere the Liverpool lineup was suitably second-string – with Martin Skrtel the only regular first-teamer in the back four, while Jovanovic, Poulsen, Shelvey and Cole made up a midfield – all players who remain on the fringes of Roy Hodgson’s starting XI.

Fernando Torres was left on the bench then, despite Hodgson publicly promoting the possibility of a start for the Spaniard. Hodgson later revealed that he had been convinced by medical staff to keep Torres out of the action in preparation for the weekend fixture with Fulham…

“I had a vision of Fernando going out there, having a great 45 minutes, it being good for his confidence, maybe scoring a goal and giving him a little lift. I was only going to play him for 45 minutes. He didn’t play against Aston Villa and he was quite looking forward to playing. But when we sat down and we started to talk about it again, it seemed to me the disadvantages or potential disadvantages far outweighed any potential advantage.”

Hodgson was also questioned on the form of Joe Cole, who again disappointed having started the night out on the left flank, but switched inside behind the striker in the second-half. On a night which missed the flashes from Torres, Cole failed to capture the limelight and continues to struggle at Anfield. Hodgson had this to say on the Summer signing’s form…

“He sets himself high standards, he plays on small margins, he’s an honest lad and I’m sure he came off the field thinking, ‘That wasn’t the performance I wanted to give. I’m better than that and I can do better than that. It was just unfortunate he was unable to show that tonight but it certainly wasn’t for a want of trying or through a lack of effort or desire. It didn’t go his way and that can happen with front players.”

Cole is likely to find himself on the Liverpool bench against Fulham then. Indeed, aside from Skrtel, it’s hard to imagine any of last night’s side making an impression on the teamsheet. Steven Gerrard remains a doubt for a return against Hodgson’s former club. The Liverpool boss revealed yesterday that his skipper was still a risk…

“Steven Gerrard is not fit and will be touch and go for Fulham. He is training every day and training harder than anyone. But we have to be careful there is no risk of the injury reoccurring”

Frank Lampard will step up his fitness ahead of the weekend clash with United by taking part in a behind-closed-doors match today at Chelsea’s training headquarters. Lampard came off the bench at Spurs last weekend but looks certain to be in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup for the Stamford Bridge meeting with United. Lampard’s return will likely see Florent Malouda return to a left-flank position having been forced to play a deeper role in recent weeks.

Gerard Houllier’s unsettled relationship with his players continues with reports of Richard Dunne, John Carew, Habib Beye and Stephen Ireland all given a run-out with the reserves in a behind-closed-doors match yesterday. Houllier dropped stand-in skipper Dunne to the bench for the much-needed win over rivals West Brom at the weekend. It remains to be seen if he and the likes of Carew and Ireland figure in the manager’s plans for the trip to Wigan on Saturday. It looks unlikely. Nigel Reo-Coker also got a run-out in the game as he continues his quest for fitness following injury.

And finally…Birmingham’s Roger Johnson has apparently used team-mate Nikola Zigic in training to help him prepare for the confrontation with Newcastle’s Andy Carroll at the weekend…

“Obviously Ziggy is a big lad, which puts you in good stead to face someone like Carroll.”

Johnson is still likely to find the actual clash with Carroll a shock to the system, unless of course Zigic has suddenly mastered the art of actually winning a header and hitting the target in training.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

G Cahill - out Samba - in ... is as good as done come Saturday morning, hunched over a the Met Office website with a bowl of Cornflakes and Spongebob Squarepants for company.

I don't care about the troubles at Blackburn, he'll be picked and has the potential of CS, goals and bps. The very three things young Gary is lacking.

What about this 'interesting football' the poultry boys are seeking? Might lead to..y'know..porous defence, more attack oriented style. I think Kean was in cahoots with the owners in ousting Fats, something rotten in Chickenville. I see conspiracies eveywhere tho. You don't work for the government do ya? Should change their name now - any ideas?

Having a hard time picking Captain this GW.

    Foster
    Kolarov - Givet - Vidic
    Bale - Nasri - MGP - Nani
    Tevez - Carrol - Elmander

Sub: Jask - Bardsley - Ferguson - Gohouri

Thinking Nasri/MGP, but Nasri is somewhat a gamble too with Fab back. Nani could be a dark horse against Chelsea, but that is quite a big gamble!

Yes, I do agree that could turn out to be smart and I can`t make up my mind. I just changed Bardsley -> Elmander because of the def. issues at Sunderland this GW, but normaly I would play Bardsley due to home fixture.

11 mil. in the bank, but no free transfers. Anybody worth a hit?

I'd still go for Nasri, with wenger not taking any risks with fab a game against stoke which is bound to be more physical than others, i can't see him playing the full game. plus stoke have only kept 3 clean sheets all season in the pl, so at the emirates you'd think arsenal will score a few and nasri is highly likely to be part of if not the scorer of more than one

I reckon McCleish's job is on the line, Zigic has been a disaster.

Good day for England in the end. No wickets down and dealt with the new ball well, leaving a lot and getting themselves in.

Big day tomorrow now to see if we can get a decent total!

300 odd with a few wickets in hand by the end of the day?!?

It probably is a 350 wicket if England are patient.

Team at the moment for next GW:

    Coleman Johnson Jara (Knight Elmo)
    MGP Nani Nasri Nzog (VDV)
    Elmander Carrol Torres

    Possible transfers in order
    1. Knight->Kolarov
    2. Elmander->Tevez (if he plays)
    3. All of the above with a hit

    Thoughts?

Not really a fan of getting rid of Elmander yet, good away record and a tasty home game next week, he's gone after that tho. First one looks very good.

Sunderlands defence has been coming good of late and Elmander seems to have run out of steam = more than likely another 2 point haul

Thought I was smart saving a transfer to have 2 this week but don't no what to do! Could just 1 though I suppose. So much uncertainty around right now.

    Robbo Foster
    A.Cole Vidic Kolarov Simpson Tamas
    Nani Cahill Nasri Nzogbia Jarvis
    Drogba Carroll Elmander

    3.4m in the bank.

Nothing screams out does it? Either Drogba to Torres (I did that last week and am still not totally sold on it) or Elmander for a mid priced punt? Defoe?

I don't know about doing the drogba transfer at least he's scored in the last 2 games. Maybe do one if ya need ta Goose, could always just get rid of Simpson as Newcastle don't have the best of gws coming up. You wouldn't necessarily have to play the replacement this week and you'd still have 2 to fcuk about with next.

I think that only Tevez or Torres could (big could though) make your team really stronger. So you could either downgrade Cole and upgrade Elmander or just do one transfer (Cahill and Jarvis maybe out...)

Cheers chaps, Simpson or Tamas out for maybe a sunderland defender looks decent to give me a better defensive squad, I think I may keep hold of Elmander for this week. Torres for Drogba looks tempting but Im not really taken by anythin at the moment.

So I finally have a week without injuries and suspensions and can at last get Kolarov in, so why does it feel like it's going to be a disaster? One of my bench defenders is going to run riot I can feel it...

Some advice on which defender to ship would be appreciated, it's between Foley / Jara / Gohouri, leaning towards Gohouri on the basis of fixtures and rotation.

i wouldn't touch either for captain at this moment, but if you're gambling then torres as at least you know he has the potential to score BIG

    Advice plz guys.Team as follows:

    Foster,
    Kyrgiakos,Samba,Jara,
    Nani,Nasri(C),Cahill,Barton,
    Drog,Tevez,Elmander.

    Subs: Krul,Coleman,D.Collins,Adam(susp.).(1 freebie,3.4 in bank)

Assuming Tevez stays, which of the following transfers should I make???:

    A) Elmander->Carroll (have wanted to bring Carroll in for a long time now, don't give a toss about his tough upcoming games, the boy is a fixture-proof genius!Should have brought him in last week itself).

    B) Drog->Carroll and Adam->Lampard(-4);(not sure about this one as I think Drogba will deliver against MU and ARS.Wanted to do A)+ Cahill->Lampard but falling 0.2 short, though I can bring Fabs instead).

    C) Drog->Torres and Cahill->Lampard(-4);(again not sure about selling Drog).

    Thanks in advance.

Of those 3 I'd do A, I don't think Lampard is worth a hit and I think Cahill to VdV in a week or two would be the better move anyway.

I agree, A is the best. Lampard is uncertain at the moment. You are right about Drog.

I have elmander and am benching him this week as I like the rest of my mid and forwards. I'd swap him with Carroll, but I'd maybe wait a week and then have two shiny free trannies next week.

Now, obviously, I know that if you have two transfers available to you and you only use one, it rolls over so that you have two the next week. However, if you only use one in the following week after that do you lose the two transfer option? I’ve never done it like that that’s all, so thought it best to see if anyone else has or what their interpretation of the rule is. Hope that makes sense as a question of sorts!

They've changed the rules for this tear. The transfer will keep rolling over, but you'll never have more than 2 free transfers.

Cheers all, that was my understanding too but thought it best to clarify. It may come in handy in a week or two depending on how I play it.
