Liverpool play out a drab stalemate with FC Utrecht in their meaningless Europa League tie, as Fernando Torres remains benched and Joe Cole remains ineffective. Elsewhere Frank Lampard is upping his preparation for the weekend clash with United and Birmingham appear to have at last found a suitable role for Nikola Zigic…as a training aid…

Roy Hodgson employed a 4-4-2 system with Ryan Babel and young Nathan Eccleston paired in attack. Elsewhere the Liverpool lineup was suitably second-string – with Martin Skrtel the only regular first-teamer in the back four, while Jovanovic, Poulsen, Shelvey and Cole made up a midfield – all players who remain on the fringes of Roy Hodgson’s starting XI.

Fernando Torres was left on the bench then, despite Hodgson publicly promoting the possibility of a start for the Spaniard. Hodgson later revealed that he had been convinced by medical staff to keep Torres out of the action in preparation for the weekend fixture with Fulham…

“I had a vision of Fernando going out there, having a great 45 minutes, it being good for his confidence, maybe scoring a goal and giving him a little lift. I was only going to play him for 45 minutes. He didn’t play against Aston Villa and he was quite looking forward to playing. But when we sat down and we started to talk about it again, it seemed to me the disadvantages or potential disadvantages far outweighed any potential advantage.”

Hodgson was also questioned on the form of Joe Cole, who again disappointed having started the night out on the left flank, but switched inside behind the striker in the second-half. On a night which missed the flashes from Torres, Cole failed to capture the limelight and continues to struggle at Anfield. Hodgson had this to say on the Summer signing’s form…

“He sets himself high standards, he plays on small margins, he’s an honest lad and I’m sure he came off the field thinking, ‘That wasn’t the performance I wanted to give. I’m better than that and I can do better than that. It was just unfortunate he was unable to show that tonight but it certainly wasn’t for a want of trying or through a lack of effort or desire. It didn’t go his way and that can happen with front players.”

Cole is likely to find himself on the Liverpool bench against Fulham then. Indeed, aside from Skrtel, it’s hard to imagine any of last night’s side making an impression on the teamsheet. Steven Gerrard remains a doubt for a return against Hodgson’s former club. The Liverpool boss revealed yesterday that his skipper was still a risk…

“Steven Gerrard is not fit and will be touch and go for Fulham. He is training every day and training harder than anyone. But we have to be careful there is no risk of the injury reoccurring”

Frank Lampard will step up his fitness ahead of the weekend clash with United by taking part in a behind-closed-doors match today at Chelsea’s training headquarters. Lampard came off the bench at Spurs last weekend but looks certain to be in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup for the Stamford Bridge meeting with United. Lampard’s return will likely see Florent Malouda return to a left-flank position having been forced to play a deeper role in recent weeks.

Gerard Houllier’s unsettled relationship with his players continues with reports of Richard Dunne, John Carew, Habib Beye and Stephen Ireland all given a run-out with the reserves in a behind-closed-doors match yesterday. Houllier dropped stand-in skipper Dunne to the bench for the much-needed win over rivals West Brom at the weekend. It remains to be seen if he and the likes of Carew and Ireland figure in the manager’s plans for the trip to Wigan on Saturday. It looks unlikely. Nigel Reo-Coker also got a run-out in the game as he continues his quest for fitness following injury.

And finally…Birmingham’s Roger Johnson has apparently used team-mate Nikola Zigic in training to help him prepare for the confrontation with Newcastle’s Andy Carroll at the weekend…

“Obviously Ziggy is a big lad, which puts you in good stead to face someone like Carroll.”

Johnson is still likely to find the actual clash with Carroll a shock to the system, unless of course Zigic has suddenly mastered the art of actually winning a header and hitting the target in training.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If you've kept Malouda this long you may as well keep faith.Unless you have two transfers and need to use one.

dont really want to triple up on liverpool players. Yaya maybe as they have a nice run of games with 7 of the next 12 at home. I would go VDV but not sure he will be risked against blackpool even if the game went ahead. Lampard or essien maybe but that would be about the time of the wildcard window.

            Any suggestions?

I would look at replacing Adam. If the game is off this weekend, he will effectively sit out two gameweeks because of his suspension. Add in the potential for yet another postponed game, and a drop in price, and you have a lot of incentive for getting hom out.

Tough, I would say Kolarov or Vidic of that bunch, Liverpool have a decent shot at a clean sheet, Baines has assist potential, Vidic has goal threat but less chance of a clean sheet, and Kolarov has goal threat/assist threat with a reasonable shot at a clean sheet, so Vidic!

    Robinson (Foster)

    A Cole, Jara, Konchesky (J Enrique)(Coleman)

Nasri, Nani, Lampard, Bale (c), Albrighton

man utd will probably play similar to how they did against arsenal but i would wait till as late as possible and see if it snows in blackpool over the next few days also captaining bale is a bit of a risk as blackpool arent shipping to many goals at the moment. Nasri is likely to be a better option at home to stoke

I really suck at this atm, so would appreciate a little help!

    My team:
    Schwarzer Gilks
    Evra Dunn Kolarov Bosingwa Jara
    Nani Kuyt Nzogbia Bale Dempsey
    Elmander Rooney Odemwingie

I got 2 free transfers, but would rather hit -4 if needed. Was thinking about going with

    - Schwarzer > Robinson, Bosingwa > Samba and Dempsey > Fabs, (-4)

doubling on BR defense cause they have 2 home easy games and Fabs against Stoke at home, hopefully hes playing...

Is it better to just get
    - Schwarzer > Robinson, Dempsey > ? (MGP/Nasri/VdV...)
    - Schwarzer > Robinson, Bosingwa > Samba

    Nani, Nasri, Cahill, N'zogbia

I am tempted by nzogbia too, but last season did arsenal absolutely hammer stoke at home? thats in my head for some reason, so i think its hard to ignore Mr nasri, and everton are so unpredictable you cant captain cahill, if it didn't work at home to wigan, it wont work away to city!!

Other then that , bolton are a good side and i have davies, a player who does really well at home YOU have elmander, who scores away, so if i was you i would play him against a depleted sunderland side!(maybe dropping baines/vidic)

other then that looks very good, strong team there!

    For the record.

Narsi plays out on the right with or without Fabregas in the side.

He has scored a brace vs WBA & Man City with Fabregas in the side this season.

He has 12 goals already this season (in all comps) even with a month out for a knee injury.

    He only costs 8.2.

Shipping a player is usually a trigger for a big score for me also.

        I just keep reading.

"I'm worried he will be out on the right"
"I'm worried about his returns with Fabregas"
"He's not good value with Fabs back"

        Which is all daft.

Being on the right is a good point but historically fabregas' presence in the side does affect his returns. 2 goals against WBA isn't the norm. Just look at his points last season with fabregas playing.

He is playing out of his skin this season and seems to be heading to goal a lot more which his 8 goals prove.

I agree Fabregas will take the spotlight off him somewhat but he will also be providing some amazing service for him.

At 8.2 he is fantastic value.

I would rather a fit and firing Fabregas but he is neither of those at the moment and at 11.8 he needs to be, Nasri is a great replacement until Fab is 100% again.

Yeah was just about to say that as well.

It's hard to really know how Fabregas will affect Nasri this season, much like it's hard to write off Nani because of what has happened earlier seasons.

It IS true that Fabregas has hampered Nasri's output in previous seasons, but I'm more than willing to give Nasri the chance to show that he can do it with Fabregas in the side this season. He's matured a lot, very much like Nani.

Nasri has actually made more runs in to the box than Fab even when they're both on the pitch.

Fair enough. Personally i just don't buy into this idea Nasri is suddenly a WC player. He's done well against some terrible teams this year but his performance against Utd on monday cemented my views on him. Maybe it's Wengers tactical naivety against the top teams. Saying that, not having Nasri has definitely stung me so far but i'm pretty certain he won't continue his current scoring run.

I also don't think he will maintain his scoring run, however for a side that has so many goals in it vs weak opposition he is great value at 8.2.

I think he's a great player but not WC as you say, he looked like a lost kid on Monday night.

Brunt is on 4 yellows, so you might bring him in this weekend only for him to get a yellow and miss next week, that being said, he has a nice home fixture this week, but you will have the suspension hanging over you until he does.

YaYa I am tempted by I have to say, I don't think he will be as consistent as Brunt, but could be good for next 3-4 games.

I would prefer to have Brunt, and he will be less likely to be rotated over Christmas too, but beware of the cards!

Just looked ahead to the Christmas fixtures. It's more congested than I thought, 4 games in 10 days!
As Johnny Unitas mentioned in a post yesterday, the big clubs will definitely rotate. The smaller clubs will flog their small squads until they drop.
There is no way some of these players will play 4 games in 10 days:

    A. Cole -- Needs to rest his ankle after every game
Fabs, VdV, Stevie G -- Just back from injury
    Cahill, Schwarzer -- (Asian Cup)
    Nasri -- A bit fragile?

Might be best to get some Wolves & Newcastle players on board, or some defenders that don't run around much.

    tevez debacle summed up:

From today's Guardian...nothing more to be said.

A Brief History Of Carlos Tevez
    The boy's got form...

    Boca Juniors (2001-2004)
Tevez forces his way out of the club claiming that the press intrusion in Argentina is too much for him and his family and the club aren't doing enough to support him. Public bust-up with manager also ensues.

Claims he loves the club and supporters, and always will.

    Time at club: Two-and-a-half seasons.

    Corinthians (2005-2006)
Tevez forces his way out of the club, going on strike, after arguments - some physical - with teammates, the head coach and the club president.

Claims he loves the club and supporters, and always will.

    Time at club: One season.

    West Ham (2006-2007)
Tevez almost immediately falls out with the manager and players. Storms off and threatens to go on strike after being substituted. Goes AWOL to Argentina at one point.

Claims he loves the club and supporters, and always will.

    Time at club: One season.

    Manchester United (2007-2009)
Tevez complains of being fatigued and overplayed in his first season. In his second, he complains of being underplayed - drama queening it every time he's taken off - managing just five goals, despite playing more minutes than the league's third top scorer Fernando Torres. Parting shot of "I'll scream in Ferguson's face when I score against them".

Claims he loves the club and supporters, and always will.

    Time at club: Two seasons.

    Manchester City (2009-????)
Tevez is tired, homesick, wants to retire, takes time off to see his daughter and is caught on camera spending that time allegedly banging his mistress (the actually banging remains unphotographed), feels there's too much greed in football despite being the highest-paid player in Britain, hates football in general yet throws a wobbly every time he's taken off, wants his old life back, hates the club executives, claims that he would like to punch his young teammates and finally hands in a transfer request.

Claims he loves the club and supporters, and always will.

Time at club: One-and-a-half seasons so far, some of it begrudgingly.

    Sums it all up really......

    Foster (Krul)
    Foley/Dann/Coleman(Evatt)(GCahill)
    Nani/Malouda/Bale/NZog/Kuyt(C)
    Picquionne/Drogba(Elmander)

It’s not great but there are a lot of uncertainties at the moment so don’t want to do too much. Thinking
    (1) RVP for Elmander
    (2) Torres for Drogba;
    (3) Yaya; or (4) Fabs in for Malouda.

If the Blackpool game is off, Adam will miss the following 2 gameweeks. Hardly ideal, so he will have to go.

    Considering replacements with negatives attached.

    a) Brunt (4 yellows, but good fixtures and almost equal price)
    b) MGP (new management, slightly higher price)
    c) N'Zogbia (slightly higher price)
    d) Etherginton (tough fixtures, slightly higher price)
