As news of early postponements broke, Fantasy Managers were left frantically juggling resources in order to capitalise on a fractured Gameweek, only to find that the freeze had ravaged all but two matches on the fixture list.

Sunderland’s win over Bolton and a 1-1 draw at Ewood were the only sources of returns on offer, and with City’s Eastlands encounter with Everton on Monday the only scheduled game remaining, Gameweek 18 has become a chaotic milestone in the Fantasy season and lady luck is set to play a considerable role in the outcome.

Here’s the notes on yesterday’s chilly encounters…

Danny Welbeck’s fifth goal in six games will win him all the plaudits but Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan also played their part in a three-pronged attack that always looked dangerous once the Black Cats had found their stride. Welbeck’s run over his last six matches has also brought him a total of 10 FPL Bonus Points. The young striker offers outstanding value over Sunderland’s forthcoming run of fixtures with an FPL price tag of just 5.1 will likely enjoy a bandwagon of Fantasy attention over Christmas. One word of caution – he will of course sit out the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford as part of his loan from United – so those who invest immediately will need to wait before they can benefit from any returns.

The Sunderland defence earned their ninth clean sheet of the season – no other Premier League side can match that, including Chelsea and Man City. Steve Bruce’s side have kept 5 shut-outs in their last 8 league matches. Going forward, they have fixtures that could help them build on this fine defensive record, at least once the trip to Old Trafford on Boxing day is out of the way (mun BLP BLA avl NEW blp).

This fine defensive record has been built despite a string of injuries in the the back four. That continued yesterday with John Mensah limping from the pitch on 20 minutes to be replaced by Elmohammady. The Egyptian moved to right-back, with Nedum Onuoha shifting alongside Anton Ferdinand, who himself returned from injury to start this game. Elmohammady at 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, could now be set to enjoy at least a couple of starts at full-back, bringing him back on the radar in the short-term. Phil Bardsley, available at 4.5 looks a stronger option having cemented his role at left-back.

Craig Gordon’s super human save to somehow deny Zat Knight in the first-half will surely rank as the “save of the season†thus far. Gordon returned having missed out at Fulham to an injury but, if he remains fit, is clearly Steve Bruce’s number one and offers value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Lee Cattermole will also miss the Old Trafford trip on Boxing Day. He picked his fifth yellow card of the season and was lucky to escape without seeing red for the third time this year. Young David Meyler will likely come into the side to replace him having dropped to the bench yesterday.

Owen Coyle made two changes to his Bolton lineup. Fabrice Muamba came in for the suspended Mark Davies as expected, although Chung-Yong Lee’s relegation to the bench, with Matt Taylor coming in on the right-flank, was a surprise. Lee leaves for the Asian Cup after the Boxing Day programme – clearly Coyle is preparing his side for his absence by making this move although the Bolton boss later stressed his desire to keep Lee at the Reebok after the Boxing day meeting with West Brom. Coyle is hoping to have Lee around for at least two more fixtures.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies again drew blanks – the Swede has now gone four consecutive Gameweeks without return, while Davies at least mustered a Bonus Point from yesterday’s showing, to go with the assist earned in Gameweek 17. The Reebok encounter with West Brom is crucial to the Fantasy prospects of the pair – fail to score in this one and Bolton next travel to Chelsea and Liverpool. Sales of the previously potent Bolton forward line would look very likely to continue should they reach that point without returns.

The 1-1 draw at Ewood was most notable for the injuries sustained by the home side. Chris Samba was forced from the field before the hour-mark. He has suffered an ankle injury, although Rovers caretaker boss Steve Kean was quick to dismiss this one as a minor setback…

“Chris felt a little tweak in his ankle, a little twist, so we don’t think that is a bad one.”

It remains to be seen whether Samba will be available for the Boxing day clash with Stoke at Ewood.

Phil Jones isn’t anywhere near as fortunate. His Fantasy owners suffered a roller-coaster afternoon after seeing him dropped to the bench by Kean. Jones replaced Samba from the bench but then suffered suspected knee ligament damage. The early prognosis isn’t good according to Kean

“He felt the outside of his knee and he knew straight away, he’ll see a specialist in the morning and I think it will require an operation and quite a long term injury”

Rovers also lost Jason Roberts to a hamstirng injury and he will be sidelined until the New Year.

Morten Gamst-Pedersen’s influence on Blackburn’s play, particularly from set-pieces, was again in evidence and he duly earned another maximum Bonus Point haul. He has now gathered 14 Bonus Points in the last 8 league games – an incredible return. Only two midfielders – Charlie Adam and Charles N’Zogbia, have earned more Bonus this season.

West Ham will be pleased with their point but they also have major injury concerns of their own. Robert Green missed the game after failing to recover from minor surgery this week – he will be expected to return for the Boxing Day encounter at Fulham. The Hammers suffered two injuries in the warm-up for the match with Zavon Hines (knee) and Valon Behrami (hip) both having to drop out. In addition, Victor Obinna failed to make the trip having sustained a leg injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thats why I'm not too upset about this weekend.

I posted this yesterday, that there are now a load of tasty DGW's coming up and the best part is that we have loads of the players already so we don't need to transfer a ton of them in.

Man Utd players and Charlie Adam are going to be essential purchases over the next few weeks.

And people looking at getting Fabs in will have an Arsenal DGW to look forward to playing him in (he should be up to full match fitness by then).

      Happy days are ahead, folks!

I'm seeing this as a blessing in disguise. Not because of the double GWs, but because it gives players such as VDV, Cesc and Lampard to find their fitness for another week. They have a few more days to train up and arent thrown straight into the fray.

      Agree/disagree?

Kind of hinted at that above (Fabs should be fit in time for the DGW's which will probably now be around the middle of Jan).

        Having a DGW only helps!

However on the downside, it means Adam has to go a week longer before he can play again.

No. I was considering Samba for Hangeland but decided against it as it made more sense at that point (11.25am GMT) to bank the transfer for next week.

I couldn't be sure the B'burn game would go ahead so thought discretion was best.

In hindsight it was a wise move, although getting in Onouha or Bardsley would have worked out OK (just knew I'd have to leave them out next week as you wouldn't play them against Man Utd so, again, didn't seem worth it that late in the day).

I wildcarded. Bit disappointing, but I had other reasons for doing so. My logic was that it could give me a big boost, but I also had some issues with my team - Berbatov and Hahnemann not getting picked, Foster's tough fixtures, and not having Nani and especially Carroll was hurting me. So I thought I'd use it to cut out the deadwood, bring in the players I was lacking, pick a squad who were all supposedly still playing at deadline to minimise the damage, bring in Tevez and Lampard, and if it all goes horribly wrong I'll have another one in a few weeks to rectify the damage.

Obviously at 11.30 they were all playing. Still got Kolarov and Coleman, Foley and Spector are both OOP, Spector at least played yesterday, then got subbed on 57mins. Enrique I already had and fancied his chances up against Birmingham. I seriously considered Nelsen but decided MGP was enough Blackburn in case that game got pulled.

Keepers - looks like those two will be competing for Arsenal's no1 jersey, for some reason I assumed the Arsenal game would be immune to the weather, and after Chelsea we have a storming run of fixtures.

Not really, it's a smart move by Chelsea in my opinion.

Clearly, they are in no form at the moment and this was a pivotal game in the title race. Ancelotti likely felt that, if they played the game today, Chelsea would lose and fall further behind in the title race.

The snow gave him and Chelsea a legitimate 'reason' to call the game off. By calling it early they got in quickly before any chance of a thaw could prevent them from legitimately using the weather for their benefit later on.

It's really just the same as when a heavyweight boxer has a bad training camp in the lead up to a title fight and pulls out with a mysterious injury days before because he knows he's not in the right shape to win.

Sometimes, the best thing to do is run away and live to fight another day. I think Chelsea saw the opportunity to do just that and grabbed it with both hands.

Now they get to play Utd in a DGW when, likely, Utd will have fixture congestion to deal with and may well be tired by the time they get to the Chelsea matchup.

        Very, very smart move, Ancelotti.

I think it is a big deal when a top premiership game in London is called off well over a day and a half in advance, when they have undersoil heating and not a drop of fresh snow has fallen since 2pm yesterday!

Ice around the ground, traffic problems on the roads, other parts of London ground to a halt. People travelling across the country to get there. I can see why it was called off early.

Also, players are more likely to get injured warming up/playing in bad conditions.

...but no, it was Ancelotti's decision 'cos Chelsea are scared, right? /s

Hang on, don't you mean cynical move. It's annoying to hear the 2 mixed up again as with the Mourinho CL game when he had two players sent off on purpose.
Chelsea will have the same problems staging the match if both sides continue to progress in the FA Cup and it has to be played before the return game at OT.

              What rule did they break?

Is it cynical? Yes, of course it is. But what would you have done in his position?

Seriously, its easy to criticise people from the comfort of your armchair.

But if you were in Ancelotti's position and you genuinely felt this game was coming at the wrong time and the opportunity came along to put the game back a few weeks, what would you have done?

And AP, from a man who supports a club whose manager looks the other way when his players dive and con the referee I really don't think you have any credibiity calling out Chelsea on this one.

              Sorry, man, but no.

I don't think it was Ancelotti who made the decision to call the match off. Doesn't work like that.

More likely to have been John Terry's decision.

Lol. I'm only surmising of course but I expect that, if this was a calculated decision by Chelsea then Ancelotti would have had some input into that decision on a consultation basis.

I'm a QPR fan so I have no loyalty to Chelsea or Man Utd in this case, but I can understand why, if they wanted to avoid Utd at this point in their season, they called it off yesterday.

alright ken, re city, they've had a bit of time to make sure that outside the stadium can be made safe enough, the pitch will be fine its all about wether or not there is overnight snowfall in manchester which would amount to making the place unsafe.

Really? I can't see hm not keeping it up. He was on fire at the end of last season and has kept it going. I might keep Nasri over Fabs to allow me to keep nani and get Lamps and VDV. It's a lot of transfers though, might have to wait till the wildcard.

For anyone worried about the game tomorrow, I live in Manchester and it would be a huge shock if the game is called off. It's very cold here but last snow was Friday night. The area around the stadium is very modern and they've had plenty of time to sort it. I'd be very sure the game will be on.

I have -1 with Tevez (c) & Baines to play.

he has 0 with Toure & jagielka to play. One of which will be his captain.

I basically need Tevez to score to win and Man City have to concede. its a bit of a head ufck.

I'm by no means a big name but unless Tevez delivers I'm losing cup and h2h games to two who kept elmo. And may main league rival has eight playing and is already on 29pts.

My season has went pear shaped since I decided to go for the "ultimate" midfield of Fabs,Malouda, VDV, Nani & Arteta. Just before they all lost form, got injured or suspended. D'oh!

        Ah well, them's the breaks.

Yeah they look very solid, particularly at home. Trouble with that shorlist above is that i have an everton, sunderland and blackburn defender already so unless i get VDS i will undoubtedly be doubling up quite a bit. I'm not convinced this is necessarily a bad thing but it certainly leads to a lot of boom/bust weeks.

I'm in that boat so let me know if you find anything spectacular please.

My thoughts was to get Robinson in sooner or later, partly because he rotates well with Foster and partly because I have far more faith in him than in Jaaskelainen.
