As news of early postponements broke, Fantasy Managers were left frantically juggling resources in order to capitalise on a fractured Gameweek, only to find that the freeze had ravaged all but two matches on the fixture list.

Sunderland’s win over Bolton and a 1-1 draw at Ewood were the only sources of returns on offer, and with City’s Eastlands encounter with Everton on Monday the only scheduled game remaining, Gameweek 18 has become a chaotic milestone in the Fantasy season and lady luck is set to play a considerable role in the outcome.

Here’s the notes on yesterday’s chilly encounters…

Danny Welbeck’s fifth goal in six games will win him all the plaudits but Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan also played their part in a three-pronged attack that always looked dangerous once the Black Cats had found their stride. Welbeck’s run over his last six matches has also brought him a total of 10 FPL Bonus Points. The young striker offers outstanding value over Sunderland’s forthcoming run of fixtures with an FPL price tag of just 5.1 will likely enjoy a bandwagon of Fantasy attention over Christmas. One word of caution – he will of course sit out the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford as part of his loan from United – so those who invest immediately will need to wait before they can benefit from any returns.

The Sunderland defence earned their ninth clean sheet of the season – no other Premier League side can match that, including Chelsea and Man City. Steve Bruce’s side have kept 5 shut-outs in their last 8 league matches. Going forward, they have fixtures that could help them build on this fine defensive record, at least once the trip to Old Trafford on Boxing day is out of the way (mun BLP BLA avl NEW blp).

This fine defensive record has been built despite a string of injuries in the the back four. That continued yesterday with John Mensah limping from the pitch on 20 minutes to be replaced by Elmohammady. The Egyptian moved to right-back, with Nedum Onuoha shifting alongside Anton Ferdinand, who himself returned from injury to start this game. Elmohammady at 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, could now be set to enjoy at least a couple of starts at full-back, bringing him back on the radar in the short-term. Phil Bardsley, available at 4.5 looks a stronger option having cemented his role at left-back.

Craig Gordon’s super human save to somehow deny Zat Knight in the first-half will surely rank as the “save of the season” thus far. Gordon returned having missed out at Fulham to an injury but, if he remains fit, is clearly Steve Bruce’s number one and offers value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Lee Cattermole will also miss the Old Trafford trip on Boxing Day. He picked his fifth yellow card of the season and was lucky to escape without seeing red for the third time this year. Young David Meyler will likely come into the side to replace him having dropped to the bench yesterday.

Owen Coyle made two changes to his Bolton lineup. Fabrice Muamba came in for the suspended Mark Davies as expected, although Chung-Yong Lee’s relegation to the bench, with Matt Taylor coming in on the right-flank, was a surprise. Lee leaves for the Asian Cup after the Boxing Day programme – clearly Coyle is preparing his side for his absence by making this move although the Bolton boss later stressed his desire to keep Lee at the Reebok after the Boxing day meeting with West Brom. Coyle is hoping to have Lee around for at least two more fixtures.

Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies again drew blanks – the Swede has now gone four consecutive Gameweeks without return, while Davies at least mustered a Bonus Point from yesterday’s showing, to go with the assist earned in Gameweek 17. The Reebok encounter with West Brom is crucial to the Fantasy prospects of the pair – fail to score in this one and Bolton next travel to Chelsea and Liverpool. Sales of the previously potent Bolton forward line would look very likely to continue should they reach that point without returns.

The 1-1 draw at Ewood was most notable for the injuries sustained by the home side. Chris Samba was forced from the field before the hour-mark. He has suffered an ankle injury, although Rovers caretaker boss Steve Kean was quick to dismiss this one as a minor setback…

“Chris felt a little tweak in his ankle, a little twist, so we don’t think that is a bad one.”

It remains to be seen whether Samba will be available for the Boxing day clash with Stoke at Ewood.

Phil Jones isn’t anywhere near as fortunate. His Fantasy owners suffered a roller-coaster afternoon after seeing him dropped to the bench by Kean. Jones replaced Samba from the bench but then suffered suspected knee ligament damage. The early prognosis isn’t good according to Kean

“He felt the outside of his knee and he knew straight away, he’ll see a specialist in the morning and I think it will require an operation and quite a long term injury”

Rovers also lost Jason Roberts to a hamstirng injury and he will be sidelined until the New Year.

Morten Gamst-Pedersen’s influence on Blackburn’s play, particularly from set-pieces, was again in evidence and he duly earned another maximum Bonus Point haul. He has now gathered 14 Bonus Points in the last 8 league games – an incredible return. Only two midfielders – Charlie Adam and Charles N’Zogbia, have earned more Bonus this season.

West Ham will be pleased with their point but they also have major injury concerns of their own. Robert Green missed the game after failing to recover from minor surgery this week – he will be expected to return for the Boxing Day encounter at Fulham. The Hammers suffered two injuries in the warm-up for the match with Zavon Hines (knee) and Valon Behrami (hip) both having to drop out. In addition, Victor Obinna failed to make the trip having sustained a leg injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Chelsea v Manchester United called off by Chelsea because of their poor form?
Opportunity to play the match later when Chelsea's health and form improves
is too much for Chelsea to pass up?
If true the FA will be so mad they will have to fine and suspend Mick McCarthy.

I reckon if it had of been played today the best case for Chelsea would have been a draw.

Later in the season though (especially when Chelsea add some new faces in January) it'll probably be a home win.

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez is expected to return in the Barclays Premier League match against Everton on Monday.

Tevez was rested on Thursday night when the team drew with Juventus in the Europa League after missing the West Ham victory through suspension.

Aleksandar Kolarov is also available after a ban but Nigel de Jong sits it out under the totting up procedure.

Ahead of the game City coach David Platt is confident the Tevez saga will not affect the performance and said: "I think players keep themselves in a bubble. In my experience of professional football they are very resilient.

"We know there is an issue around the club but it is not an issue that affects what is happening on the pitch.

"Once they cross that white line they go out and play. I don't think it will be a problem with our on-field stuff.

Meanwhile, Steven Pienaar is doubtful for Everton

yay 5pts and a green arrow for me!.

If i've set my vice captain on form, does it go to the player with the highest form who actually plays, or the the player with the highest form regardless of whetehr he plays or not? I've had a scout of the rules and it's not clear to my mind.

"If your captain does not play then he will be automatically substituted in accordance with the rules at the end of the gameweek. A new captain, either the player with the highest form or price value at the start of the gameweek, will then be selected based on your emergency captain strategy."

So i think it will go to Carroll for me 🙁

I have 2 suggestions for improving the captaincy rule: I'm sure this sort of thing has been suggested by many people before but thought I may as well document it:

    1) You choose a top 3 choice for each gameweek. This makes it more skilled than immediately defaulting to form/value. If none of the 3 play (rare circumstances like this GW's weather) it then defaults to form/value selection, as long as you have submitted a top 3 captian choice in that GW (hit a button). If you don't bother to select a top 3 during each GW then you don't get a captain at all (i.e it won't default to form/value if you aren't bothering to log on and update your team each week.)

This will mean you actually have to play the game in order to benefit and adds a bit more engagement for all players - form/value is boring.

    2) Captains score x1.5 rather than x2. I think x2 is too much and changing it to 1.5 would place a greater emphasis on picking a good overall squad. This would reward overall skill and commitment to a greater degree rather than the large slice of luck involved in captain selection - but still ensure captain choice is an important part of the game.

      nah

i think it should just be captain and vice captain

if both your cap and vice cap dont play tough luck

this form/value sh*t is downright pathetic my mate ended up getting about 80 points off lamps last season because both form and value were the same having never captained him once

some people will never change there team for a whole year but will always be getting points if there caps stuck on value

and 95% of the time at least your vicecaptain if not ur captain will play as most people will put them on assured starters

I don't think it much matters. Although, as per above, in addition to adding a ManU defender I would also add a Sunderland defender (Bardsley or Onuoha). That would give you the option of playing a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 in addition to the 3-4-3.

For all those suggesting Yaya is a bad choice... strongly disagree. I'll say the same as I did with Pedersen about 4 weeks ago - Yaya is good value and has some good fixtures.

One of the best valued midfielders around.

          Hey man!

Started your fm11 campaign yet? 🙂

Because I remembered last night that I actually do have a good tip! Go for a bigger squad rather than a smaller one with higher skilled players, because the amount of injuries in the game is ridiculous.

I was so crippled by injuries that I had to frequently play U18 players in the Champions League etc, because of the insane injury list.

I have indeed, started as Arsenal, bought mostly youth players. Phil Jones, Connor Wickham, Alex Smithies and a whole host of other youngsters from abroad so haven't really improved the core of my squad. Started the season really well, was top but since I've had so many injuries and I can't get any run of form going.

My injuries I have are disgusting tbh! RVP who was on fire with 14 goals in 17 games is out for 7 months, Nasri out for 3-4 months, Denilson out for 3 months, Arshavin out for 6 weeks. Have no money left either, sitting in 5th so not doing too well but feel a little hard done by with the injuries! Can't seem to get Fabregas playing well either, he's been decent but not great, playing him in centre mid with Song as an advanced playmaker with a support role..

Yeah it's almost a bug to the game in my opinion. They should release a patch to make it more realistic. Every team don't really lose every player for 3 months every season in real life.

It's basically the same every season too, injuries piling up as soon as the season has gone a few weeks. That is why I really recommend having a big squad if possible.

I think Phil Jones will be a great purchase for you, in my campaign he turned out to be a world class player for Liverpool if I'm not wrong.

In my later seasons I really cut down on the training to get less injuries. It worked to some extent but not perfectly, and obviously the players don't evolve as well if you cut down on the training.

Keep me posted on how you do, I've not had anybody else on here who seemed interested in fm11 🙂

Hey.... I'm half way through a season playing as Catania (The Elephants!) and no unusually cruel number of injuries with me (touch wood). So maybe it's the league? To be honest, as an Arsenal fan, that injury list doesn't sound too far a leap from reality - sadly.
Really good game though I reckon. Sortoris Ninis is a star. As are Daniel Adejo and Andrea Seculin.

Cheers, I'll have a look at them.

Haha, yeah I've loved FM for years but found last years a little boring so decided to get this a few months after release, loving it so far anyway. Very frustrating times for my team though, I'm having to play Wilshere and Vela most games at the moment and although thats fine at home against weaker sides, when away in tricker games it basically just fails.

I'll tell you how I get on anyway! 😀

                    What's your secret? 🙂

That man Ninis was a real star in my last campaign as well. Atletico Madrid dominated Europe with him as one of their super stars.

Will have a look at Adejo and Seculin if I start over again. I might actually give it a go with a league two team or something, see if I can take them up to the Premiership.

They will be rearranged to another gameweek, so some teams will have TWO matches in one gameweek at some stage. Plenty of points to be gained as you understand.
