On a night which saw Carlos Tevez assure his immediate future at Man City, Roberto Mancini’s men failed to take their opportunity to climb to the top of the table, denied by a superb Everton display.

The Carlos Tevez affair was always going to provide an unsteady backdrop for City’s big night. While the PR machine’s plans to publicly calm matters went smoothly, out on the pitch the script was torn up as strikes from Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines, plus a defiant showing from keeper Tim Howard, frustrated Mancini and the Eastland’s faithful…

The defeat for City was a bittersweet ending to the day and for Tevez’s Fantasy owners. Although second best in the first-half, City did provide a major attacking threat in the second period, but found the Everton defence and Tim Howard in particular, in no mood to concede. The stats show that City fired in 17 attempts – a figure which continues a recent trend that has seen City improve as an attacking force. As for Tevez, he contributed 2 attempts on goal, both on target, in addition to 2 key passes that set up chances for team-mates. Not one of his most productive games.

David Silva continued to be a major influence in midfield – seeing a lot of the ball once again. He has now become a key figure for Roberto Mancini’s side and there appears to be little risk of rest or rotation around his role.

Aleksandar Kolarov also demonstrated why our Members stats show him to be the most attacking full-back in the league. He fired in 3 efforts on goal and attempted 10 crosses on the night – far more than Baines in opposition. Attacking returns for Kolarov are not far away on last night’s evidence.

Kolo Toure’s dismissal for two yellows late on will see him miss the Boxing Day trip to Newcastle. Mancini has the likes of Jerome Boateng, Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott who could all come into his role. Vincent Kompany also picked up a booking last night and is on the suspension tightrope as a result.

Mario Balotelli, largely ineffective again, could also be a doubt for the Newcastle trip – he was replaced by Jo late on having suffered a knock.

Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines were once again the key attacking figures on the night for Everton. Cahill first converted a cut-back from Fantasy favourite Seamus Coleman to head home unmarked. He then added to his night’s points tally by registering the assist when he laid the ball into the path of Baines to curl home the second.

Cahill now has 9 goals for the season and is just 3 FPL points behind leading midfielder Nani. The Aussie not surprisingly came out of the game with maximum FPL Bonus Points – the first time since Gameweek 2.

Cahill’s potential is severely hampered by his departure for the Asian Cup. He is expected to leave Goodison in the New Year, with the possibility that he could be absent from Everton’s New Year’s Day fixture with Stoke in Gameweek 21; he could be missing right up until Gameweek 25.

Everton have key injury concerns ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Birmingham at Goodison. Phil Jagielka limped off in last night’s game having been a doubt all week with a thigh injury. David Moyes is also without John Heitinga who is nursing a knee problem which could mean that Tony Hibbert will have to deputise alongside Sylvan Distin.

Moyes will also be without Victor Anichebe for that game of course after he saw red for two bookings. Mikel Arteta will return from his suspension however, presenting Moyes with a poser in midfield. Jack Rodwell could find himself dropping to the bench to make way, although Moyes will surely consider keeping his lineup intact after last night’s display.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Mark you forgot to mention Cahill emergency bench captaincy.

P.S. Even now I regret choosing Arteta instead of Cahill. My worst decision of the year.

The Cahill-Arteta choice was a genuine 50-50 decision for me. I do feel a bit sorry for those who picked Arteta, as I it could easily have been me.

Nevertheless good call on Cahill. We all should think that he was Oop.

P.S. Akers there were some comments around here, about your contribution and I want to say that I support you and keep up the good work. This site is great.

I plumped for Arteta over Cahill as I thought that, other than goals, what does Cahill offer? At least Arteta has setpieces, assists and bonus points in his armoury.

Of course, then Cahill goes on the best goalscoring run of his career...

Assist Arteta? Am I reading correctly??? They need the Yak or Saha in form.

The problem again, is that Baines is more likely to gain fantasy points in that case.

    teves, carol, elmander

I am starting to wonder if he will ever assist or score, but I only got him in last week. Had Boateng before that who got me 4-5 clean sheets in his time, far more productive, that being said, he had a great low drilled shot in open play last night which could of easily been a goal if on target, and probably a lesser keeper than Howard last night, and also had a few cut back crosses into the box (one shot from Silva in particular) that could of resulted in assists

I'd be interested to see how VDV fits into the Spurs lineup with everyone fit first, you have enough money to afford waiting another week. Very expensive keepers and defence, Toure > Kolarov makes sense but maybe consider downgrading elsewhere? Eg even if you wanted representation from the same teams, it would be considerably cheaper to get Cech in goal instead of Reina, and downgrade Ivanovic to a Liverpool Defender.

yup. i have minoglet before getting reina. with 3.0 in bank, i got no idea who can i spend the money on.
it's different last season when we know expensive players like drogba and rooney guarantee return but now, everyone is investing in carol, brunt, adam, etherington...

yup. but i will keep in mind your suggestion when i need to free some more points. it's a good pointer. thanks.

I sold Bent for berba last year in the corresponding ManU/Sun game.

The rest is history. Bent touched the ball once, scored and got 9 points. Berba scored with a spectacular bycicle kick and only scored 6pts.

After the ManU game Sun have 2 very nice games and it seems their games have better chance of going ahead in weather.

Wellbeck not playing vs manU this week.

Just concerned that since Gyan started playing a bit more, Bent has scored 1 goal. I know e was out for a while but that's still a lot of weeks he was playing and doing not a lot. Just can't get Rooney out of my head, nice fixtures and the double GW, I know for a fact I'd regret it though 🙁

It's not just his crosses, it's City's lack of height of ability to get men into the box which concerns me. With Silva + Tevez playing, you almost negate the need for crosses.

        Vidic Samba Coleman (Kolarov Simpson)
        Nani(c) Malouda NZog MGP (Yaya)
        Carroll Torres Drogba

        Bank: 0.3

Thinking I need to swap Krul in the transfer, but it's selecting the 11. Some people simply can't be dropped such as Carroll, and Drogba has Arsenal where he has a superb record against.

rafael is far too much of a rotation risk. was thinking bosingwa because he when fully fit he is 1st choice right back and after arsenal chelsea have some nice home games

Rafael is now first choice right back and will suffer no less rotation than Bosingwa will. When fully fit there is no evidence that he is first choice, when Alex comes back in January (albeit late January) Ivanovic will go back out to his favoured RB position.

One thing that I have noticed this season ( I could be wrong) but there seem to be less penalties? Like the argument of having Dunn (I know I know), Arteta because they are on penalties doesn't really carry as much water this year. Now fair enought, neither Dunn or Arteta have played all the time, but in general, there just seem to be less penalties, but as I said above, I could be wrong?

Nice example of stats misrepresenting reality. Kolarov had two good shots on goal yes, but he was rubbish on the night. Most of his crosses were extremely poor, and he was massively at fault for the first goal.

He makes sense from a fantasy point of view, but he is a bit pants imo. Hopefully I'm wrong and he gets a goal next time out. Come on Alexsandr!
