On a night which saw Carlos Tevez assure his immediate future at Man City, Roberto Mancini’s men failed to take their opportunity to climb to the top of the table, denied by a superb Everton display.

The Carlos Tevez affair was always going to provide an unsteady backdrop for City’s big night. While the PR machine’s plans to publicly calm matters went smoothly, out on the pitch the script was torn up as strikes from Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines, plus a defiant showing from keeper Tim Howard, frustrated Mancini and the Eastland’s faithful…

The defeat for City was a bittersweet ending to the day and for Tevez’s Fantasy owners. Although second best in the first-half, City did provide a major attacking threat in the second period, but found the Everton defence and Tim Howard in particular, in no mood to concede. The stats show that City fired in 17 attempts – a figure which continues a recent trend that has seen City improve as an attacking force. As for Tevez, he contributed 2 attempts on goal, both on target, in addition to 2 key passes that set up chances for team-mates. Not one of his most productive games.

David Silva continued to be a major influence in midfield – seeing a lot of the ball once again. He has now become a key figure for Roberto Mancini’s side and there appears to be little risk of rest or rotation around his role.

Aleksandar Kolarov also demonstrated why our Members stats show him to be the most attacking full-back in the league. He fired in 3 efforts on goal and attempted 10 crosses on the night – far more than Baines in opposition. Attacking returns for Kolarov are not far away on last night’s evidence.

Kolo Toure’s dismissal for two yellows late on will see him miss the Boxing Day trip to Newcastle. Mancini has the likes of Jerome Boateng, Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott who could all come into his role. Vincent Kompany also picked up a booking last night and is on the suspension tightrope as a result.

Mario Balotelli, largely ineffective again, could also be a doubt for the Newcastle trip – he was replaced by Jo late on having suffered a knock.

Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines were once again the key attacking figures on the night for Everton. Cahill first converted a cut-back from Fantasy favourite Seamus Coleman to head home unmarked. He then added to his night’s points tally by registering the assist when he laid the ball into the path of Baines to curl home the second.

Cahill now has 9 goals for the season and is just 3 FPL points behind leading midfielder Nani. The Aussie not surprisingly came out of the game with maximum FPL Bonus Points – the first time since Gameweek 2.

Cahill’s potential is severely hampered by his departure for the Asian Cup. He is expected to leave Goodison in the New Year, with the possibility that he could be absent from Everton’s New Year’s Day fixture with Stoke in Gameweek 21; he could be missing right up until Gameweek 25.

Everton have key injury concerns ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Birmingham at Goodison. Phil Jagielka limped off in last night’s game having been a doubt all week with a thigh injury. David Moyes is also without John Heitinga who is nursing a knee problem which could mean that Tony Hibbert will have to deputise alongside Sylvan Distin.

Moyes will also be without Victor Anichebe for that game of course after he saw red for two bookings. Mikel Arteta will return from his suspension however, presenting Moyes with a poser in midfield. Jack Rodwell could find himself dropping to the bench to make way, although Moyes will surely consider keeping his lineup intact after last night’s display.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Am about 80 points off the top of my mini-league and feel as though I need big time differentials. Mainly I'm think Lamps but will watch this GW and decide for the Bolton game. Nonetheless, I need to get more cash in the bank (the proposed transfer is Lee -> Lamps). Have Tevez, Carroll, and Torres up front. Am thinking Torres out and perhaps Bent in. Sounds good? Would it be mental to go for RVP?

Funny time to transfer Torres out (even if blp game off), RVP not mental but probably premature, Lamps also possibly premature.

With 20 weeks to go 80 points is not that much, I don't think you need "differentials" - just solid play, ignore your opponents. IMO

Cheers for the quick replies everyone. I didn't even consider no transfer this week and then 2 the following week depending on games on/off, form, playing time. It's just annoying as in the previous three years I've been the leader and not the chaser!

A lot of people are questioning Bent's effectiveness now with Gyan and Welbeck in the team. Obviously Welbeck is out this week but he's an even cheaper option and on current form capable of scoring just as many points as Bent.

      Hi durhamjets33

Sounds like a good enough transfer to me, but my strong advice is to not start to chase differentials just yet. Half the season is still left and you can easily claw back that deficit.

Go with the players you believe in and don't care about your rival until there are about ~8 gameweeks left.

Nothing looks pressing, could maybe do Bale to VdV but I see Bale possibly playing more during the fixture congestion.

I would look at downgrading one of Tevez/Torres in the future for Cahill -> Lampard in the new year.

I'd hate to do no transfers if I had 2 free, maybe Welbeck out for someone that will play and bring him back in later, or Welbeck -> Bent and Bale/Cahill/N'Zogbia down. Just ideas, none seem really amazing though

    Hi all.

Assuming i’m not gonna bench Carroll, Cahill, Nani or Nasri next GW, wich one should i bench from the remaining 4 of my front 8:
    - Drogs at Emirates;
    - Bale at Villa;
    - MGP home against Stoke;
    - Elmander home against West Brom.

I’m leaning towards benching Elmander. The lad seems to have lost his touch…

    Also, question number 2:
Assuming that the Blackpool game goes ahead, should i play Reina or play Robinson at home against Stoke?

    Tks.

    Cheers

Based on current form I would go with Elmander as well. Even in bad form Drogba loves playing against Arsenal, Bale is always dangerous and MGP is in v good form and is at home.

I would play Robinson either way simply because Blackpool for all everyone thought they wouldn't have only failed to score 3 times this season.

There was an argument on here yesterday about how much luck plays a part in this game and this weekend has gone to prove it. Unlucky man.

Hopefully they will modify the rules for next season which scraps this nonsense rule of form/value for emergency captain. New rule shud allow you to select your vice captain if neither play tough shizzel.

I don't see how that eliminates luck.

At least with the way it is, you get someone decent as your captain. Someone who you transferred in, presumably, because you thought they'd do well.

If you have a captain and a vice captain and both their fixtures are postponed, you'd be in a much worse relative position than you are now.

I think the entire gameweek should've been scrapped (although I'm rather glad it wasn't).

It doesnt eliminate luck completely, but what it does give you is clarity as to who your captain will be if your first choice isnt playing, and he cant be a sub unlike the farce of lastnite where people have benched cahill and due to circumstances he comes in and is captained to boot.

It will also clear up the forum where yesterday a hundred and one people were looking for clarity on the form/value issue.

Would really appreciate some advice on my team. I have 2 freebies and 7m in the bank, but can't think of what to do:

    Foster Carson

    Samba Kolarov Konchesky Huth Coleman

    Malouda Nani Nasri MGP Barton

    Drogba Elmander Carroll

    Considering the following:

    1) Upgrade Carson. But to who? Gordon? Doesn't seem to rotate great with Foster?

    2) Switch a def to a MUN def? But who would I drop?

    3) Upgrade Barton? Maybe to Brunt of N'Zog?

    4) Upgrade Elmander? But I would kick myself if he finally got some points against WBA after doing nothing since I bought him.

The main problem is that there's a no one I particularly want to bring in. Any suggestions?

      1) Very much up to you what about Begovic? Think he rotates ok?
      2) Bring in Vidic with that much money for Samba or Huth
      3) Bartons good because you won't mind benching him but will score points as well.
      4) Might well be the best bet up to someone like Tevez due to your lack of City coverage?

Thanks, good suggestions. Begovic is a good shout but I already have Huth and rather not double on Stoke.

Could be solved by your Huth - Vidic option, but don't really want to use both frees for the sake of it. Also Vidic is expensive and could prevent me getting a big gun as easily.

Tevez is on the radar for Elmander, but feel its a bit soon to ditch Elmander.

        Does that make sense?

Save transfer now, upgrade Elmander after WBA game.

      Your goalies has:

Foster with eve MUN ARS blp AVL mun MCY

Carson with bol BLA MUN ful BLP bla WIG

which rotates fairly well in my eyes!

Thing is I lose a free transfer if I don't make one!

You're right they do rotate well, the problem is Carson doesn't keep cleanies even in his easy home games.

          Okay, didnt notice that.

Then I would either upgrade Carson, or maybe even Malouda->Lampard (bit premature).

Maybe Konchesky->Man United defender IF the blp-game is off?

Do we think that VDV is fit to play now?

I think so personally, but the question is, will 'Arry start him, I left him in my team but am not sure whether to play him or not now. Mind you if the Blackpool game is of then I'll have to bench Torres anyways.
