Last night, the scene was seemingly set for Man City; their captain withdraws his transfer request following a period of unrest and with so many games snowed off, Roberto Mancini’s side would soar to the top of the table just in time for Christmas if they managed a victory…. Then along came David Moyes to burst the Abu Dhabi bubble.

City went into the game strong favourites but a look at their home form shows they have scored just two goals in the last five games at Eastlands whereas on the road, they have grabbed eleven goals over the same number of games. So far this season, away from home when the onus is on their opponent’s to attack, City have excelled both offensively and defensively; not only have they scored more goals on the road than any other team, they have the joint-best record for goals conceded, too.

At home, however, they have the second-worst tally in the league; a total of nine goals scored is better only than Wigan and Birmingham’s eight. Outwith the three goals in their first home game of the season against Liverpool, City have scored just six times in the subsequent eight home games.

In Fantasy terms, it’s best summed up by the returns of Carlos Tevez; his last five home games read (1,2,1,8,2) and last five away games read (11, 12, 8, 16, 1). When teams play deep, it seems, City are struggling to break them down.

Yaya Toure has -somewhat surprisingly- been fielded in a role playing behind Carlos Tevez this season and the two “Average Position” maps below are taken from the last home and away games the two have played together.

The top map is from City’s game at Fulham and shows how offensively Tevez (32) was positioned. By staying so high up the pitch, he allowed his midfield to bomb forward, as shown by Toure’s (42) position, as the ex-Barcelona man played higher, on average, than David Silva. Between them, Tevez and Toure grabbed three goals and an assist in City’s 4-1 win that day. With their hosts pushing on, it was easier for City to exploit any gaps left in the Fulham defence.

The bottom map is taken from last night’s encounter with Everton and illustrates City’s problems when face with a well-drilled opposing side. On average, Tevez was barely higher than the halfway line, with little space between Toure and himself, particularly in comparison to the Fulham example.

This is backed up by the passing heat maps of both players: although their “Passed Made” were higher up the pitch against Everton than against Fulham, the above “Average Position” map shows them lower, which goes to show how often the pair must have dropped deep when not on the ball.

For all City’s possession -they had 69% of the ball- Everton showed their opponents lack the guile to do any real damage. Mancini’s side may well have had plenty shots but many were wild efforts that came from a desperation to rescue the situation and were subsequently blocked or off-target. The hosts had just five shots on target last night and it took a deflection from Phil Jagielka to grant them a consolation goal.

Give Mancini credit; he seems to have the team’s shape and personnel pretty much nailed away from home, but what is clear from these last few Eastlands matches is that City need a little more craft and intelligence on the ball at home. Alternatively, perhaps a change in formation or player roles -David Silva in the hole behind a Tevez and/or a front two?-could be the answer to their problematic home form. One thing is for sure, though, something need to change if they are to maintain their title drive. Mark Hughes can tell the Italian that much.

    Hey guys,

Quick question.... looking to invest in uniteds defence.

    Who would you lose from:

    Coleman, Shawcross, Samba, Konchesky, Bardsley

    Cheers

Obviously if Samba is out for a couple of weeks then him.. Hard to choose other than that. Maybe Konchesky? Liverpool may miss the Blackpool game and Aurelio is waiting in the wings...

yeh the samba injury could give me the easy option but the mans a man mountain, he would probably play with a broken leg lol

i fancy liverpools fixtures after blackpool and while roys in charge i cant see him dropping paul.... but if his mum carrys on you never know!

Do people think Coleman will play every game over the busy festive period? He seems to be one of the first players subbed off and Moyes recently advised he wanted to rest him

Both Pienaar and Osman being fit could pose a bit of a problem for Coleman, but he's played well in the last few games so I wouldn't expect for him to be dropped.

I know what you mean about Liverpool's fixtures, but just reading Liverpool forums etc, there is so much criticism of Konchesky, and his mum's comments can't of helped. Aurelio could possibly nick at least one start from him in the busy schedule, but I'm just speculating....

In my opinion Shawcross does not offer that good value this season. Coleman is good. If he can keep his position.

Evening all. I would appreciate some advice for my team this GW. Line up is.

    Hart

    Kolarov/Distin/Acole (Konch/Samba)

    Ethers/Nzog/Nani/Pedersen (Lee)

    Tevez/Elmander/Torres

    I have x2 freebies & .3 in the till.

I was considering getting shot of Cashley to free up some greens and do Cashley>Rafael or Bardsley and then I can do Ethers>VDV.

Is it foolish to offload Cashley now as Chelseas run is more favourable after this GW?

    Thoughts appreciated!

I assume you'll lose a fair bit of value on Cashley? I think that if you've held onto him for so long, you may as well keep him. He scored at least 12 points at the Emirates last season, and then after that game we have 4 favourable fixtures coming up (3 home games and Wolves away).

Likewise Etherington has some decent games coming up too, and I'd be wary about how much football VDV will play in the next week or so having just come back from injury and with the schedule being so congested.

Perhaps just Lee > Yaya Toure this week? Your team is very solid.

Good points Jamsie! As you say I've held onto Cashley for so long now and the fixtures do improve for Chelsea shortly. I dont think its out of the question for Ethers to do well at Blackburn either.

Yaya Toure is a good shout.

    Foster (Gilks)
    Konch Jags Kol (Cech, Simpson)
    Nasri Nani Silva N’Zog (MGP)
    Torres Tev Berbs

1 Free transfer after last weeks madness.

I'm thinking of Nasri to VDV although I'll lose 0.4 on Bas if I do.

Stevvi - perhaps you should just get rid of Silva instead... His performances don't seem to translate into FPL points, a bit like Modric.

He wasn't that bad against you lot... Sure he didn't touch the ball too often, but he looked the most threatening Arsenal player when he did get on the ball. Although that isn't saying too much...

And it's not as if his fixtures are particularly bad either. I haven't even looked at the possibility of getting rid, although if Samba is announced fit then I'll have a tough decision over whether or not to bench him this weekend.

Weird, i'd say his fixtures are pretty bad. Chelsea at Home then 2 away fixtures albeit against average teams.

Plus yes he was that bad. If Rooney had produced that you'd still be going on about it...

To be honest the first time I heard it was Matt's version. Then I youtubed the Biffy version last night.

They're extremely similar to be honest.

People need to get a grip. I can understand why people dislike the X Factor, and I detest several aspects of it, but it's entertaining in the most part, so I watch it. As for Matt, he's a genuine guy who is genuinely talented. If it were One Direction or Cher covering some song and getting to number one then I could understand all the haters, because they represent everything that is wrong with the X Factor.

I like talking about the X-Factor. It winds people up. I generally watch some or all of it most years. Didn't watch it all this year though. I generally don't ever listen to anything that gets released by the artists afterwards, although just because they've been on the X-Factor doesn't make me not buy it like some music snobs.

The same ones that quote the classic line "so and so has SOLD OUT". I love that one.

Rubbish Granville, Andy and Jamsie, he is nothing special at all

There are so many better male vocalists

                to name just a few

Angus Stone, Josh Groban, James Mercer, Raphael Saadiq, Jamie Lidell

These and many more are far more deserving of praise, acclaim, record sales than one of Simon Cowells chimps

Oh dear i think i just agreed with DB.

I bet if any of these male vocalists mentioned had gone through and got famous the x-factor way BUT still sang exactly the same as they do now you would hate them.

You could be the best singer in the world, write all your own songs and play 100 different instruments. But you go on the x-factor and people think you can't sing.

Also. Why does it matter if there are better vocalists out there? It doesn't mean the guy can't sing.

You don't suddenly call every footballer who isn't Messi not special. There's still very good footballers, who just aren't quite as good as Messi.

Its the praise , merit, acclaim which is grossly out of proportion with reality thanks to the PR of X Factor.

Why not? He clearly wasn't making it in the music industry so had a go on the X Factor. I actually think it was his then girlfriend who persuaded him to do it anyway. And he's said that he's going to record original stuff now, rather than covering tracks etc.

I do like the way he was portrayed as a nobody though, even though his parents are as posh as anything, and he was privately educated.

He didnt make it in music industry as a proper singer song writer for a reason

He is being made out as proper singer song writer anti pop orginal act.

The truth is the true talented people would never ever go on such a programme. Proper singer/song writers would never jump on the gravy media sob story drivel.

Yes I have a massive problem with Simon Cowell and the X factor.

There is a wealth of quality music out there both old and new and all they do in the show is get people who look nice or are sympathy votes and then massively over produce usually great songs and turn them into an inane drivel.

I dont have a problem if people realise this but its those who dont and as the years go by there will be more and more people who think of the X factor as Music, it isnt.

Cowell is paid to promote his own acts. It's absolute genius. As a businessman he's unquestionable. Culturally though it's an atom bomb of mediocrity infecting the entire nation with it's glorified Karaoke, and the winner has zero talent apart from the ability to sing 'alright' and to be told what to do.

                    Cowell is a genius ?

                    Ive heard it all now.

Cowell is not a genius merely taking advantage of the very large proportion of people who dont know their arse from their elbow. Modern western culture on average is a very very stupid place.

Its an insult to the great minds of the day to call a man who is only after money a genius.

                    Andy

In the grand scheme of things making money from the deluded masses from a sing song is pretty trivial

There are far more worthy things goin on in the world

This is the great crux today. Publicity is mistaken for real impact and importance.

Of course there is. Unfortunately those things don't generate money.

It's the same thing with people who complain about footballers wages when soldiers and doctors etc don't get paid the same. Unfortunately that is life. While doctors and soldiers are doing a more important job, they don't generate a shed load of money while doing so.

Andy - to your point above

I wasnt saying those singers to prove that there are better vocalists out there it was to prove a point, that there are great singers who dont get the recognition that these X Factor goons get

The singers I referred to are not the best ever but they are very good and far better than Matt Cardle.

Your messi comparison is way off. Matt cardle is a pub league player, there is a lot of talent inbetween.

I agree with what your saying about security making things much more difficult for genuine games players and some of it is draconian but in defence of it, the game industry loses millions and millions through piracy, particularly PC piracy, so much so that fewer and fewer games are being made for the PC because of it. It has a huge knock on effect for the industry.
It's the same with homeland security at airports, a bloody pain in the arse, but necessary because of the selfish few who think that terrorising is the way to achieve their goals.

Four changes to the game that I think would be a massive improvement.

    1. Captain - just as with your subs, you assign a three man preferential running order. None of the three play - then tough.

    2. Clean sheet bonus - +1 for 60 mins and +1 for every 10 mins thereafter, which would take you to the full four points for a total 90min clean sheet. Ludicrous that a 90+4 minute goal wipes the bonus out completely.

    3. Sub or subs come in ONLY if at least 6 (ie more than 50%) of your starting XI play - this would lessen/eliminate Cahill type incidents, where one of us had no intention of playing him but ended up with his points through a farcical 3 match gameweek!

    4. Last same team player to touch the ball gets the assist. No grey areas - no moaning - total consistency - no more e-mails to FPL towers.

    Yes/No/Maybe/Amend?

      1. Yes
      2. No, if you concede in the 90+4th minute, you've still conceded - maybe you've lost instead of drawing, maybe drawn instead of winning.
      3. No. The bench is there in case of injuries, resting and cancelled games, having a good bench over Xmas / New Year makes sense. Rule 1 would stop the Cahill situation being as bad.

      as for 3...

FPL should simply not count the games in week where more then 50% of the games are cancelled...it adds too much random luck and undermines the integrity of FPL. (you would also have to not count any rescheduled games if they occur within say 4 weeks to be fair to players who had/didn't have players in the initially cancelled games)

Absolutely, we will discuss this in the podcast tomorrow. It's simple, a gameweek needs to have over 50% of the fixtures to count as a gameweek otherwise all scores are zero.

I had Wigan, Spurs and Liverpool players this week who were my bankers and none of them played. It's a simple rule that will solve the unprecendented points swings that happened this week. They do it in other fantasy games.
And before someone says sore loser, I called for the same solution last year when some games were called off.

        1) Yes but I would just have captain and vice captain

        2) is totally ludicrous. That isn't how clean sheets work.

        3) Subs are worth half points

        4) nope, assists should be judged. The last player to touch the ball shouldn't necessary be an assister. Take for instance RVP last year where the ball hit his shin about 50 yards from goal and Fabs took it all the way to score.

Taking into account quality of assist though is 100% subjective, would be a nightmare

60 mins gone it's 0-0 and player A, who has played none too well up till then, commits a crazy, thuggish tackle on player B. Player A duly gets sent off and now has 3 points in the FPL game. Defenders C,D, and E valiantly battle for a further 33 mins but eventually succumb to two late goals playing 10 v 11 away to a 'superior' team. Players C,D and E end up on one point. Fair?

I have about had it with the Cahill as captain comments.. Cahill was my third most expensive player, I started him as I can scarcely think of a situation when I wouldn't. I expect when I check VALUE that after number one and two go down, that Cahill is my emergency captain. Emergency. Cahill is also the second or third highest scoring midfielder-- so why wouldn't he start.

Now if you want to not replicate real football, where if five players get red, somebody remains the f'in Captain, whether a sub or still on the field== that's another discussion. ..... or if you want to say an emergency captain can't come off the bench, that's fine too.

and Man citeh were vulnerable after a turbulent week with their captain throwing a hissy fit. as it turned out they couldn't score against a ten man team.

      back to regular programming.

    From BBC Sport

"the secretary of FIFPro's technical committee, Tijs Tummers, has questioned the decision to award Qatar the tournament based on it still being held in the summer.

If you look what happened with weather problems in Europe because of heavy snowfall, you could see this as an advantage rather than as a problem

FIFPro's technical committee secretary Tijs Tummers

"It is not sensible in a country with an average temperature of 41C in June and July, a midday temperature of 50C and, above all, extremely high humidity," Tummers said.

"Tourists are advised not to travel to Qatar in the summer months and inhabitants leave the country en masse during this period.

"[So] the summer months in Qatar also do not provide suitable conditions for a festival of football such as the World Cup should be, including for the supporters."

Has there ever been a more corrupt decision made in the world of football?

It's a total disgrace. Ronald de Boar also got paid fortunes for backing them.

This is what I think but I'm not articulate enough to voice them myself 😉

Does anyone know where this quote comes from. I've seen it in a film or TV show (narrowed down a lot for you).

Someone says "touche my friend, touche"

But they pronounce touche as "touch-a".

I can never recall where I heard it, and google never seems to help 🙁

andy, if youve seen it in a film, how do you know how the spelled it in the script?

touche means, in essence, 'good rebuttal'

it's in loads of things, the simpsons being one of many
